The fact that Donna wasn't in love with the Doctor in the way that Rose and (to an unrealized extent) Martha were was the real touchstone of Donna's character. She could interact with him in ways Rose and Martha realistically could not: she could easily criticize him, judge his actions on a deeper level, and defend him in a way that didn't seem like a puppy love argument.  Not that I disliked either Rose or Martha, I didn't...but Donna was more of a Companion in a truer sense than either.

Totally agree! I loved Rose and Martha, but Donna is such a better companion because her and the Doctor are like best friends and their relationship was such a good one to watch =] x

i agree they have different relationships with him

martha and doctor equal kind of a father daughter relationship

rose and doctor is more of a boyfriend girlfriend relationship

and donna and the doctor are like brother and sister

Agree with you on the Doctor/Donna front, and I KIND of agree with you where Doctor/Rose is concerned, but Doctor/Martha always struck me as a more equal relationship; she really took the initiative and wasn't afraid to stand on her own more often than not.
