In my opinion, all secular music (regardless of what religion it came from) constitutes the most beautiful and glorious repertoire of music. Mack Wilburg and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is no exception. I can think of no large choir that can perform this genre of secular music as well as they do, and Mack Wilburg is, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant arrangers and composers of our time.
Now tell me. Where in there did I argue in favor of or against religion as a whole? Case and point.
Very impressive choir, I'm not quite sure I find the bells to be an addition that enhance the hearing experience. The rest is quite impressive indeed.

Yes, religion is made by man. And man is made by....... God. The holy scripture is the inspired word of God almighty. The world's most gorgeous music is made by religious people for God, by God. Where this might be a nice version of a great song, but why is the vast portion of the posted versions sung like a funeral dirge? Part of my problem is that if I heard any of these versions first, this song would have been a so-so song to listen to when bored, or nothing else is needing to be done, seen, or listen to. However, I heard one of the best version ever put out, it is Treasured Hymns 3 volumes. I have had a copy for nearly 20 years. When one has heard the best, one can't accept less.

@Kaileo1 Agreed! We can agree to disagree and I hold no hard feelings for you or any others of your following, my friend. (BTW - I saw you were from Hawaii, and Kaileo being a Hawaiian name. I lived their for 10 years before marrying my Marine and moving back to the mainland. There's an interesting similarity! What island are you from? I lived on Oahu through middle, high school and all 4 years of college.)
When Jesus comes again I rather believe He will be greeted by His people singing this song. Except MILLIONS of the faithful saints will join in a choir to dwarf this one. If this is only a preview, imagine what a sound we will make!!
By the way - Why do I have this tune stuck in my head but with the lyrics to "Joseph Smith's First Prayer?" Did they ever do a version of that song to this tune??
@MrsUnsilentMajority Actually, yes... Sung this Sunday as a special missionary musical number in the Modena Italy Ward! I'd never heard it before, but the tune and the hymn text undoubedtly go together well!
@Wehrheim04 Thank you! I thought I had just made that up in my head...I was beginning to wonder. Isn't it phenomenal?? Now if I can only find a recorded version of it online...
@Wehrheim04 a few years ago, the 75th anniversary dvd and cd was published by PBS. (why i don't know) i guess maybe because it was shown on all PBS stations all over the United Stats.
i bought the cd and dvd..i bet you could find it used online. and the way Come Thou Font of every Blessing is done, just makes me weep.
and also, maybe u could find the PBS special on line and then download the songs. I realize budgets are tight for some of us, so i could donwload if u would like BYU '79
@MrsUnsilentMajority I believe that medley was in one of the 2002 conferences, with an amazing solo by a tenor from the choir. It disappeared because he skipped ahead near the end of Joseph Smith's First Prayer. I remember clearly because the arrangement was so moving, my heart nearly broke for that tenor who was dying inside as he finished with such a glaring mistake, and they didn't include the recording on the cd's we ordered after conf. I wish Bro. Wilberg would have the choir do that one.

I've decided after 24 years of membership in this Church that the pessimistic, angry, hateful and oft resentful tone of our critics is no match for the way living the Gospel makes me feel. Lash out with whatever accusations you may, but you cannot offer me any replacement for the peace in my heart. And that is it's own truth.
@MrsUnsilentMajority: After 30 years in the church, & 12 outside, I've decided that most Mormons over-react to critics of the church. While they might think these critics to be angry, hateful or resentful, more often than not they simply want you to think, they want you to consider, they want you to grow. It's very similar to the enthusiasm a Mormon missionary feels. Yes, sometimes it can be heated... but on my mission it sometimes got heated too. But mostly, critics want the best for you.
@Kaileo1 Our church does not preach against other religions. Period. Trying to convert someone from their happiness is not wanting the best for them. It's wanting more people to think the way you do to validate yourself.
Then why not respect someone else's happiness? I'm never overzealous to "convert" anyone, to any way of thinking. I allow everyone the freedom to worship "how, when, or what they may."
@Kaileo1 I have never gone to a video/website/blog of another religion/sect to go out of my way to argue something they believe in. It's just disrespectful. My own zealousness is to praise and worship in my own way. I don't understand why anyone who is not LDS would post something on a predominately LDS video that is anti-mormon (or anti-Christian) just try to make us "think" about our own religion.
@Kaileo1 Equal civil rights is about tolerance and respecting peoples differences.
You quote below: " I escaped from Christianity after having spent many years in it. Why would I ever return to this mythology? What makes Christianity any better than any other religion on earth? Nothing." These are not the words of a tolerant equaltarian, my frien
@Kaileo1 If the way you are living brings you true happiness, then you must use your agency according to your own design. It is not my place to judge this, for I am doing the same in my own life, in my own way. I respect your beliefs, even if I don't agree with them. Peace is made in such ways. If someone else is seeking peace, all I can tell them is how I have found it in my own life.

Far better to live life as a grateful agnostic.
Every faith says they have truth, and how to know their faith is the "only" way. All forms of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hindu, Indigenous, Pagan/Wiccan, every single one claims to be truth.
No true God would be arbitrary and exclusionary. If worship was wanted, we'd already know what kind, without a doubt.
Best to love your life, live it to the fullest, be grateful for it, & be excited about what might come after. No religion required!
You know something Kaileo, the God you speak, loves you so much, that He sent His only Begotten Son to die just for you :-). I will pray that the love of Christ will draw you to Him....someday.
i WAS a christian, but thankfully I realized that it was a myth like all the other religions, and got out. I'm much happier now!
like I said, far better to live life as a grateful agnostic. & to those who have given me "thumbs down", it's only because you haven't yet found the courage yet to look outside your "box" & see that there is so much more than what you're used to. respect the fact that people have different opinions about faith.
@SHAlfm: I escaped from Christianity after having spent many years in it. Why would I ever return to this mythology? What makes Christianity any better than any other religion on earth? Nothing.
I don't know of another God that would die for you, do you? Let me know if find one. While you're looking, let me know if you find one that can offer forgiveness without the pretense of works based on our own ability.
@Kaileo1 Truth. Only truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. Jesus Christ our Savior is the Truth, and we can know it and be free, IF we really desire and IF we follow the path that leads to it.
@Wehrheim04 : Uh, just saying "truth" over + over is not evidence. Quite frankly, nothing distinguishes your faith in Christianity from that of the faith of the Greeks, Romans, Native Americans, Babylonians, or any other faith that has gone before. Their "hearts" also told them they had the "truth".
I firmly believe in God, but I do not believe that God has a specific religion. It is not logical, nor Godly, as God would never exclude anyone from his love. Religion excludes, God does not.
Without religion you are free to create your own moral universe, with no higher being to answer to. Or, a higher being of your own definition. Basically - now you can do whatever you want.
@MrsUnsilentMajority Uhh....no it's not. I'm not creating my own moral universe. I am living according to what someone who has claimed, and who I believe, to have receive divine revelation from God himself as to what moral's will bring us closer to him and to happiness. I'm not distorting scriptures to suit my own purposes or making up what I think God to be according to my own definition, making up my own laws so that I do not have to face the idea of sin or answer to God for it.
Mormons deny the Trinity.... that God is the true Father, Son and Holy Spirit..... and that by His suffering on the cross we have received eternal life...
@automattek91 We believe they are 3 distinct and separate beings who are one in PURPOSE. If they are all the same, who was Christ talking to while he was alive and on the earth...always praying to the Father. Why did he claim to be the SON of God and not God himself. These are things we consider in our beliefs of them being separate.
@automattek91 But mostly - Joseph Smith saw them. BOTH of them. God the father, and Jesus Christ. And yes, we do believe that by Jesus Christ's suffering the atonement for mankind in Gethsamane and on the cross that we - according to our faith and good works are eligible for eternal life. According to His judgement and no one else. You may do well to focus more on our similarities than our differences. They may surprise you.
@automattek91 We believe that there are three members of the godhead. Heavenly Father, Christ and the Holy Ghost. We believe that these three are one in doctrine and perpose.
I believe in Jesus Christ, in his teachings, he is the center of everything I believe in. I believe in the biblical account of Jesus Christ that he atoned for mankind, died, and was resurrected. That he lived a perfect life and I struggle and strive to answer his call to become like he is. I'm a Mormon. Am i not Christian if I love, have faith in, and strive to become like Jesus Christ? Joseph Smith is not the center of our religion, it is Jesus Christ.
Mormons ARE Christians. A Christian is someone that believes in christ. That is why Mormons celebrate christmas as well as easter. There was recently a talk in the Mormon General Conference regarding the topic of a mormon's Christianity.
A Christian is someone who strives to be Christ-like. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas and Easter, due to they are originally pagan holidays. Probably 80% of people who believe in Jesus really aren't Christ-like. There are many prisoners who "convert" to Christianity only to blow it off once they leave prison. Many others cuss up a storm, yet believe in Jesus, just don't strive to be Christ-like.
Some of that is right..... but the core belief of a Christian is someone who believes that Jesus came to earth to and died on the cross to take away our sins.... He has given us salvation... It is only through HIM that was are saved... we are redeemed children of God... "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith"...Ephesians 2:8
The direct translation of Christian is to be Christ-like. Unfortunately Eph. 2:8 is so overused. Grace alone doesn't save. One has to live a life becoming to God. Many believe(that's what they've told me) that they can go out and go bar hopping, steal, rape, kill, etc. and would go to Heaven should they be killed during the crime/sin.
Well first off you do not believe in the authentic inspired Word of God if you say that Eph. 2:8 is overused.....It takes a muster seed of faith you know.... You should read more about Martin Luther.... if it weren't for him we would all be Catholic or Muslim....
..... Yes you have a point there..... Faith alone saves.... but the good works prove your faith is there in existence..... one can say that he is saved alone by grace but then will have nothing to show for it..... Many people are skewed by those passages... particularly the Catholics......
My husband and I don't celebrate either, but rather try to live life every day in honor to God. Not saying those who do celebrate them don't, but I'm going to stop typing now as I'm sure I'm confusing everyone:)
This is about as good as it gets. Mack Wilberg is a wunnerful arranger and his music is glorious. I was in Norman, Oklahoma and heard the choir and orchestra Saturday evening. My feet have not touched the ground since. Many thanks. It is the same feeling I had when I heard the NY Philharmonic and the NY choral artists do the Mahler #2 a few years ago. Wow! Wow! Wow!
My heart is so full. My testimony of this, our Lord's glorious gospel is firm, and as to our ultimate divine purpose here upon the earth. God bless this magnificent choir that it may continue to elevate and inspire the world for years to come!
Let me state up front that I am not a Mormon. Having said that I have found many LDS hymns a lifelong blessing. This one, along with Come Come, Ye Saints, Faith in Every Footstep, ... well, my personal list goes on and on. You may not know it but the BYU website can no longer keep Music and the Spoken Word on it's website past their original Sunday broadcast anymore. For some time I have gone there and pulled up past ones they kept. Copyright problems etc., so I am told. What a blow to me.
@1950Bob I liked your post Bob, you may already know it, but if you do not, reseach the history behind Come Come, Ye Saints and it will give the hymn even more meaning. Hymns bring a powerful spirit, I'd second Pilottim79's invitation. All are welcome to our meetings and at least three hyms are sung each meeting :) God bless.

magnificent!...heavenly!..."Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above." Amen
This song by the Mormon Choir is so emotional. Simply beautiful! When you really listen to the words you can't help but well up inside and have a renewed gratitude for our dear Savior.
My dream on day is to sing with them..... I love this song with all my heart and soul, if anyone ever asks me what my favorite song is... "Oh, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" will be my answer<3333
Man, I almost started crying the first time I heard this song and every time I sing along I do start to cry. What an incredible song. Thank you so much for posting this song. Thank you thank you thank you. I will listen to it often!
I believe there are two reasons why the MTC is unexcelled: 1) The singers believe in what they are singing, heart and soul with every fiber of their being. You can see it in their expressions. 2) The auditioning process to become a member of the MTC is extremely arduous; you can't just be a good singer--you have to be a great singer. Competition for membership is intense.
wow, is all I can say. I've directed this hymn several times with several large choruses, but no matter how hard anyone tries, there'll never be a choir that performs as well as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Unbelievable, and thanks for posting.
i thought the byu mixed choir version was better, till i heard this mtc version. i loved the bells. gave me shivers and the lyrics of the chorus is just so touching!
Hey thanks for posting this, I had put this CD onto my iPod, but this song was missing, so I'm glad I have somewhere where not only can I listen, but also watch!
We believe that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are one in purpose, not one in body. Your basing your facts off the Nicean Creed, which was purley a political based policy, not scriptoral. Explain to me how the trinity can all be one person when Christ was being baptized. How are they one person, if Christ was being baptized, God the Father spoke from heaven, and the holy ghost descended as a dove? It makes sense they are three sperated individuals united in purpose.
I can attest to you, before God and all angels and man, that this is the true Church of Jesus Christ. I doubted, I questioned, I tried to know, I studied, I prayed, I put it to the test, and God spoke. Period. All your Anti- rantings won't change a iota of the truth of God. As for the similarities, that's the same approach used by those who affirm Christ is a copycat of Horus, Mitra ecc... Truth is always truth, and vicious lies, too, it seems. So sad.
If this is not a Freudian slip... What is the difference between a Mormon choir and a Christian choir, I wonder? This is the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing one of its most beautiful CHRISTIAN hymns. You may find many other Mormon Christian songs and hymns here, either in my channel or in others. Peace, AP.
Mormons are not Christians, point blank. That's not opinion, its fact. Read up on the Christian faith, and read up on the Mormon faith. God bless you friend.
From my experience, those who say Mormons are not Christian fall into one or more of these categories: those who do not know anything about Mormons; those who do not know anything about true Christianity; those who know about Mormons and Christianity and bear false witness. Which one do you belong to? The first two are excusable. Nobody knows everything, but we can study and research from good sources. The third one... well, repentance is the only sure cure.
Mormons ARE Christians, and try to live up to that name, whilst most Anti-Mormons, online or on paper, show a fatal disease called 'Isaiah 5:20 syndrome'. The only known cure is intellectual and spiritual honesty and devotion. Read up the Scriptures and ask God. He knows the truth, for One. Mormons ARE Christians. Period. Punto. Fine. That is a FACT as sure and true as the rising sun in the heavens. God bless you with brightest truth. Peace.
The Tabernacle Choir truly sings with the voices of Angels from on High. I have seen this sung many times live by them, and I am always moved to tears. It is an indescribable feeling. I love The Choir and I love this hymn.

MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@MrsUnsilentMajority: After 30 years in the church, & 12 outside, I've decided that most Mormons over-react to critics of the church. While they might think these critics to be angry, hateful or resentful, more often than not they simply want you to think, they want you to consider, they want you to grow. It's very similar to the enthusiasm a Mormon missionary feels. Yes, sometimes it can be heated... but on my mission it sometimes got heated too. But mostly, critics want the best for you.
Kaileo1 1 year ago
@Kaileo1 Our church does not preach against other religions. Period. Trying to convert someone from their happiness is not wanting the best for them. It's wanting more people to think the way you do to validate yourself.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@Kaileo1
Then why not respect someone else's happiness? I'm never overzealous to "convert" anyone, to any way of thinking. I allow everyone the freedom to worship "how, when, or what they may."
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@Kaileo1 I have never gone to a video/website/blog of another religion/sect to go out of my way to argue something they believe in. It's just disrespectful. My own zealousness is to praise and worship in my own way. I don't understand why anyone who is not LDS would post something on a predominately LDS video that is anti-mormon (or anti-Christian) just try to make us "think" about our own religion.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@Kaileo1 Equal civil rights is about tolerance and respecting peoples differences.

MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago

@wowoak: lovely. now provide ashred of evidence that your version of God is true.
Kaileo1 1 year ago
@Kaileo1 Truth. Only truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. Jesus Christ our Savior is the Truth, and we can know it and be free, IF we really desire and IF we follow the path that leads to it.
Wehrheim04 1 year ago 3
@Wehrheim04 : Uh, just saying "truth" over + over is not evidence. Quite frankly, nothing distinguishes your faith in Christianity from that of the faith of the Greeks, Romans, Native Americans, Babylonians, or any other faith that has gone before. Their "hearts" also told them they had the "truth".
I firmly believe in God, but I do not believe that God has a specific religion. It is not logical, nor Godly, as God would never exclude anyone from his love. Religion excludes, God does not.
Kaileo1 1 year ago
@Wehrheim04: While we may disagree on God and such, all the same, thank you for posting this lovely hymn. It remains one of my favorites.

Without religion you are free to create your own moral universe, with no higher being to answer to. Or, a higher being of your own definition. Basically - now you can do whatever you want.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@MrsUnsilentMajority: Uhhhh... isn't the way you believe about God the same thing? Of your own definition?
Kaileo1 1 year ago
@Kaileo1 Not if you believe in absolute truth.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@MrsUnsilentMajority Uhh....no it's not. I'm not creating my own moral universe. I am living according to what someone who has claimed, and who I believe, to have receive divine revelation from God himself as to what moral's will bring us closer to him and to happiness. I'm not distorting scriptures to suit my own purposes or making up what I think God to be according to my own definition, making up my own laws so that I do not have to face the idea of sin or answer to God for it.

Mormons deny the Trinity.... that God is the true Father, Son and Holy Spirit..... and that by His suffering on the cross we have received eternal life...
automattek91 2 years ago
@automattek91 We believe they are 3 distinct and separate beings who are one in PURPOSE. If they are all the same, who was Christ talking to while he was alive and on the earth...always praying to the Father. Why did he claim to be the SON of God and not God himself. These are things we consider in our beliefs of them being separate.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@automattek91 But mostly - Joseph Smith saw them. BOTH of them. God the father, and Jesus Christ. And yes, we do believe that by Jesus Christ's suffering the atonement for mankind in Gethsamane and on the cross that we - according to our faith and good works are eligible for eternal life. According to His judgement and no one else. You may do well to focus more on our similarities than our differences. They may surprise you.

There was recently a talk in the Mormon General Conference regarding the topic of a mormon's Christianity.
spencergerlach 2 years ago
A Christian is someone who strives to be Christ-like. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas and Easter, due to they are originally pagan holidays. Probably 80% of people who believe in Jesus really aren't Christ-like. There are many prisoners who "convert" to Christianity only to blow it off once they leave prison. Many others cuss up a storm, yet believe in Jesus, just don't strive to be Christ-like.
godsfiddler 2 years ago
Some of that is right..... but the core belief of a Christian is someone who believes that Jesus came to earth to and died on the cross to take away our sins.... He has given us salvation... It is only through HIM that was are saved... we are redeemed children of God... "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith"...Ephesians 2:8
automattek91 2 years ago
The direct translation of Christian is to be Christ-like. Unfortunately Eph. 2:8 is so overused. Grace alone doesn't save. One has to live a life becoming to God. Many believe(that's what they've told me) that they can go out and go bar hopping, steal, rape, kill, etc. and would go to Heaven should they be killed during the crime/sin.
godsfiddler 2 years ago
Well first off you do not believe in the authentic inspired Word of God if you say that Eph. 2:8 is overused.....It takes a muster seed of faith you know.... You should read more about Martin Luther.... if it weren't for him we would all be Catholic or Muslim....
automattek91 2 years ago
@automattek91 A mustard seed of faith to start, yes. Then with faith and works working together we grow line upon line, precept upon precept.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
@godsfiddler That's right, faith without works is dead.
MrsUnsilentMajority 1 year ago
There are scriptures that say faith without works is dead.
Here's an interesting one.
James 2:18 "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works."
godsfiddler 2 years ago
..... Yes you have a point there..... Faith alone saves.... but the good works prove your faith is there in existence..... one can say that he is saved alone by grace but then will have nothing to show for it..... Many people are skewed by those passages... particularly the Catholics......
automattek91 2 years ago
@automattek91 Faith without works is dead.

It makes sense they are three sperated individuals united in purpose.
jordan23dervish 3 years ago
I can attest to you, before God and all angels and man, that this is the true Church of Jesus Christ. I doubted, I questioned, I tried to know, I studied, I prayed, I put it to the test, and God spoke. Period. All your Anti- rantings won't change a iota of the truth of God. As for the similarities, that's the same approach used by those who affirm Christ is a copycat of Horus, Mitra ecc... Truth is always truth, and vicious lies, too, it seems. So sad.

CacamanMusic 3 years ago
If this is not a Freudian slip... What is the difference between a Mormon choir and a Christian choir, I wonder? This is the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing one of its most beautiful CHRISTIAN hymns. You may find many other Mormon Christian songs and hymns here, either in my channel or in others. Peace, AP.
Wehrheim04 3 years ago
Mormons are not Christians, point blank. That's not opinion, its fact. Read up on the Christian faith, and read up on the Mormon faith. God bless you friend.
CacamanMusic 3 years ago
From my experience, those who say Mormons are not Christian fall into one or more of these categories: those who do not know anything about Mormons; those who do not know anything about true Christianity; those who know about Mormons and Christianity and bear false witness. Which one do you belong to? The first two are excusable. Nobody knows everything, but we can study and research from good sources. The third one... well, repentance is the only sure cure.
Wehrheim04 3 years ago
Mormons ARE Christians, and try to live up to that name, whilst most Anti-Mormons, online or on paper, show a fatal disease called 'Isaiah 5:20 syndrome'. The only known cure is intellectual and spiritual honesty and devotion. Read up the Scriptures and ask God. He knows the truth, for One. Mormons ARE Christians. Period. Punto. Fine. That is a FACT as sure and true as the rising sun in the heavens. God bless you with brightest truth. Peace.
