Over 100 years ago, thailand had banned Lao music because it was more popular than their own thai music. With all of the hate coming from thailand today, it seems that thais are threatened yet again by the current popularity of Lao pop music in Thailand. Lao music is original, whereas Thai music is usually covers of foreign songs. Thailand did not invent Western-style pop music so there's no need to be treatened by Lao pop music...or Thais can try banning Lao music again in Thailand. =P

Si versus Ja:

Si = Shall (i.e. Shall we dance now?)

Ja = Will (i.e. Will she be dancing?)

Hed versus Tum:

Hed = do/make (action-oriented)

Tum = do/perform (involving the mind and/or spirit)

Lao language has Ja/Si and Tum/Hed but Thai language only has Ja and Tum. Those distinctions still exist in the Lao language, just like how the English language maintains a distinction between Will/Shall, etc...

Standard Lao language has very little influence from the Thai language. However, the Thai language has borrowed a lot of words from the Lao language. Lao use Tum only to describe doing something that deal with your heart and soul for example, Tum Boon (to make merit at the temple) and Hed doing something that use your body like physical works.
