  • @MarcLucero wait wouldnt the triangle in the corner be for the inspection cut to make sure youre cutting in the right spot and not spreading the fire in the wrong direction

  • I am a firefighter too, and this is clean work. I don't know why there are any dislikes. Good job guys and I hope I see some of you at a stairclimb on Sunday.

  • Comment removed

  • The triangular cut is also used as an inspection hole.

  • I know you took heat for the music in the orginal post [ crystall method ] but I like it better great job guys great vid

  • Great technique brothers, also called the "7,9,8" to explain what the cuts look like as you progress. Is the "trash hook" the only hook available off the truck? I have seen it in several different videos during roof operations. I am a fan of the "NY Roof Hook" or "Halligan Hook" for most roof operations. Stay safe and spread the knowledge.

  • great video, but a few things- I'd use the other end of the hook just in case their are wires underneath so it wont get hooked, second I'd have the hookman right behind the vent man holding onto his pack so he doesn't fall in if soething gives way, third I'd clear those rocks so you don't get a face full of shit when you start cutting.

  • sounds like creed lol

  • this was a practical joke right?

  • CREED is the band ONE is the song

  • How do you not cut through the individual roof beams? Do you just have to feel for them and roll over them without cutting them? If you did accidently cut a beam, wouldn't you have a partial collapse where you've started ventilating?

  • i cant remember wat kind of hook is the other guy using is it a boston rake or a boston trash hook????

  • @ladderboy21

We call it a trash hook on the west coast

  • k thanx like i said i couldnt remember which one it was.

  • the building was probably coming down from demo..good training for local fire depts. if they can use it before crews knock it down.

  • We don't use K12 but a good video with different ideas and styles....I like the music!

  • and that is how you make a ventilation hole for the earth

  • they are on a commercial structure, on the roof. its not the ground.

  • LOL holy crap i thought it was a field of dirt but then when he opened up the hole it was actually a building haha i got tricked and good video guys

  • it's more like a basement with a replaceable plywood roof.

  • good video but why do they always cut the corner out first?

  • inspection hole

  • they make it look so easy

  • must stall that blade whenever it is lifted out of a cut. especially with a smoked roof. good video guys

  • i agree but its all how your department opperates. I've seen people take K12 up ladders and the trigger gets press so it send the blade spinning. if they aren't doing it as instructors then i would guess they have there own way of working there. Strong work on the cut though fellas i watch often to keep it swimming in my head

  • One by creed

  • whats the name of the song??

  • I was going to say wheres your saftey glasses...but I read on and seen someone already asked! Better a 1000 times safe then end up dead once. Stay safe brother

  • beautiful.

  • you changed the song marc what the hell. this song dons not do the oustanding job you did for the cut very good training video. LEATHER FOERVER BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey Marc,

what circular saw use you in the concrete cut-off saw? The roof consists off an wood- tar- bitumen construction, or not? In our Department we can only use in our Stihl TS 360 an steel, bitumen or an boulder circular saw. For wood and tar- bitumen we can only use an Stihl Rescue- Saw purpose built for vent. But we would also use our concrete cut- off saw.

I hope you can understand me :-)

Best regards from FD Papenburg, Germany!

  • Nice eye protection... gotta love the big city boys

  • I am wearing safety googles for all you safety nazis! lol you'll see me adjust them in the end of the vid... I learned good habits in a small town called chico... thanks for being concerned... stay safe!

  • Thats right, got to love us

  • firetulle borkes are useless for eye protection. why get it on your helmut. I rarely see anybody flip them down I have E F F goggles that work very good

  • NFPA says that theyre useless and offer no protection if any

  • idk what eff goggles are, but if you mean ess goggles, those suck too. especially on a traditional

  • What's the point of cutting the triangle in the corner?

  • i believe it provides a whole for little ventilation instead of all the smoke coming out of the cuts

  • It's a purchase point for the hand tool to remove cut section of roof material. May also serve as a quick inspection cut incase you came up short.

  • Its a sight hole for looking where the trusses are.

  • Helps the hookman by giving him a place to grab the section and louver it.

  • @FirefighterTHVFD and to check your position of your cuts according to the fire

  • it doesnt get prettier than that!!!

  • What type of blade are you using?

  • The saw is a partner 950 with a warthog blade.

  • Great cut guys!

Crystal Method music is a nice touch too =)

Out of curiosity, does Richmond wear scott packs when ventilating on high-peaked roofs?

  • whats the name of the song?? a lot of people i know have it but no one can tell me the name

  • Crystal method is the name of the band

  • @MarcLucero ---Not Crystal Mthod...Creed, and the song is called ONE....

  • Nice job but where's the eye protection?

  • Over our eyes they are called safety glasses.. you will see the guy with the saw adjust them at the end of the video..

  • didnt see him adjust them, but im sure you'd have some sort of protection.

  • just wondering what is the name of the song. Nice vent work, will have remeber to do that cut more often

  • Nice Job !!! Thats the way Brother !! Any more videos ?

I'm a fellow truckie from the North East & Academy Instructor . I would like to see more Vids if you have any .I'm just starting this youtube stuff will put out some from my job. Stay Safe.

  • One of the things that we are taught is NEVER take the blade off the ground when it is running. Roll it to the next cut. This keeps you from cutting your or someone else leg on a slippery or smoke covered roof. It has happened and i have the seen the result. It Aint Pretty.

  • Nice Cuts... Truckies.....

  • Nice video. Music ain't gangsta but its better than that "Backdraft" or "Rescue Me" song.

  • If I make any more I will make sure I use Disturbed or something like that.. I hear you on the RSQ me Backdraft stuff!

  • You guys keep punchin those holes, I'm gettin too old to make a push without that nice vertical ventilation.

Good vid and many thanks to the truckies.

  • And lastly, when cutting a roof, a full face shield will protect your face as well as your eyes from flying gravel or other debris. These may sound like minor details, but when you are teaching recruits, it's all in the details. Be safe out there.

  • If you look a little closer you will see i am wearing protective glasses. you will see me adjust them at the end of the video after I set the saw down. so for all you eye protection guys. look a little closer I am wearing them. And as far as a full shield way to dangerous in too many other situations in my personal opinion.

  • When the hook man opens the vent hole, louver it the other way so he does not get a face full of smoke and heat. He also does not have to walk around the hole to pull the vent open like he did on the second one. For the sake a hose crew below, don't drop the pieces of roof into the building.

  • I agree... Just the way this went down while we were teaching it at this moment. We verbally explained it and since this roof was frickin massive as you can see. we had plenty of time to let them make their own mistakes and learn from them. thank you for the comment.

  • Since you are academy instructors, your technique should be perfect. I have a couple of comments. (28 yrs on the job) After you make the first two cuts, I believe you call them the Head and Knockout cuts, have the saw man switch his grip on the saw so his left hand is now the on the trigger. That way he does not step on the weakend part of the roof with his left foot when making the right leg cut. He does it properly when he makes the 8 cut.

  • Well only (21 years) and only one fire. Damn it! No really dude. thanks for the comment my thing is the roof is only weakend above the saw blade and forward of it. As long as your foot stays ahead of the cut on this secind cut your ok. Why your running a rafter. after that your right and as you see hands are switched to stay out of the danger zone (weakend part) But I like your thoughts and thank you for sharing it will provoke people to think of other things too! Be safe out there!

  • one other thing...why is it named a 7-9-8 coffin cut?

  • read the discription of the video and if youhave any questions after that let me know I would be will to help you understand it better.... be safe out there...

  • what exactly is the purpose of the diagonal cut that you made (cut #2)? The only things i can think of would be to either let some gases/smoke start to push a.s.a.p., or to help find the bar joist direction?

  • next time try to cut the vent hole half way on the joist so us roofers have an easier job of putting it back together sir.

  • sorry, next fire we'll just bust out a window and try to survive the backdraft, that way we know you roofers can go home a lil early!

  • lol, only kidding man, you guys do a dam fine job,

    respect to you guys eh.

  • I am a captain with a truck co. in the Washington DC FD and am very much involved in training. Would it be possible to get a copy of thes ventialtion videos for training purposes?

  • Yes I have a lot of request for them and I am doing more all the time. Love helping out any of the brotherhood. What would you like and how... feel free to email me. best regards marc Local 188

  • Eye protection??

  • Good work, now whats with that music.
