  • very like Joan Baez with a lighter touch and a little less power; soul sisters!

  • Great song!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot for sharing it! =)

  • A lovely woman with a lovely voice.

  • I love this music. So refreshing and great to see someone singing without purple hair and silly garb. Brings joy and love to the heart. Jean from holygroundfarmorg

  • taddyd1 thinks he is Mary Hopkin

  • troppo bella bella voce bellissimo testo bravissima cantante .....sono innamorato di lei

    ciao Tommy

  • love it...

  • this sounds EXACTLY like CAROLYN HESTER

  • @taddyd1 oh no it doesn't

  • taddyd1 sounds exactly like carolyn hester

  • I love it. But I just love her voice and am glad to hear her sing almost anything. When someone sings someone elses song, comparisons will follow. They should both be appreciate and loved for who they are, not who does it better. This is not a race. Beauty and voice are in the eyes and ears of the beholders.

  • Hello Pat, I had not heard this version before. I think it is very lovely too!

  • @Camelea7 Thanks for your comment...

  • I have not heard this version before, it is very nice

  • I'm a fan of both but think Joan's version has that little bit more spookiness which makes it the definitive, for me

  • More ethereal than joan baez, more sweet and high. Mary's voice comes out of the sky, light and pure. Joan baez gives an emotional performance full of effort with superb background instrumentation, but she's half the singer Mary is,

  • Pure opinion, my friend.Just two different styles. Baez is no less performer nor singer. But far mor eformal of voice and less of a stylist than Hopkins.

  • Hopkin (no S)

  • True. I would never convince a Baez fan that Mary is better. But I have to say Mary's range is superior, and her voice is very haunting and high pure and strong with out the slow Pathos of Baez which is a bit painful to me. The key here is that if you dont like Mary's "Style" then you will never be convinced. I love Mary's style and the way she keeps the song moving and not dragging, something JB tends to do, despite her good voice and personality. I like JB but I love Mary.

  • griffcats

That is exactly how I feel. I have huge collection of Baez music, but i play Mary's far more than I do her's... I love Joan Baez and have been to a lot of her concerts. But for me it's Mary every time.

  • In the U.S. we had Joan Baez and Judy Collins; in the UK, there were Mary Hopkins and the late Sandy Denny. The four most hauntingly beautiful females voices hat ever existed IMO. All four exquisitely beautiful and of the three still with us, Judy, Mary and Joan all sound as beautiful today as they did back in the day.

  • Huge fan of both, and I think their voices are equally beautiful for different reasons. Joan's voice is more powerful, which allowed her to provide a passion to soaring protest songs like "Joe Hill",, while Mary's voice was more sweet and nuanced and fragile and conveyed heartbreak that could literally bring tear to one's eyes. I adore both of them, as well as Sandy Denny and Judy Collins.

  • Joan Baez is the Queen and Mary, alas is but a poor lass in waiting. This song is about a whore house and Mary can hardly apply the blues rquired to convey the song's intent. If Joan is half the singer than why is Mary so obcessed with her?? Joan sang without a mike in thousands and thousands of concerts a round the world, Mary is a like a Beatle's tribute act, only to JB.

  • @taddyd1 Only just spotted this comment??? What strange remarks you have made... "tribute act" ??

  • Does she sound like Joan Baez?

  • thanks mary

  • grande voce...

  • Hi Pat,

Is it really recording of Mary's 18?

    Pure virgin angel singing this!

If there were a hotel they call the Rising Sun and there were a girl lovely and resembles Mary at 1:15, I had without hesitate to knocked the opportunity door.

Sorry I am a old rude boy.

    Confidential to MH and JM.

    Take care!

    Tommy

  • Yes this is one of several songs Mary sang for Paul when she came to London to sing for him it was done at Dick James studios

  • Good morning!

    It's ariund 5h30 AM Tuesday.

I have half sleeping and made stroll here in YT hearing 浅川マキ and ちあきなおみ's covers (you can find out 朝日 with their names together in search box), and now came back to this, and saw your reply.

It's really great and treasured information from you! Thaks, thanks.

By the way confidential "against" is correct not "to" ;D

    Tommy

  • Continued.

I can now understand Mary selected this, as "her" song portion (before the Apple days) at her concert in Expo Hall Osaka Expo'70.

    All the best,

    Tommy

  • I don't think this was released on record bY mARY SO WHERE IS THIS FROM?

  • She has such beautiful voice. It sounds so meloncholic and sentiment, which suits so well with a mode of this song.

  • I apologize unreservedly to Kuramochi0214.I was not intending to link the rising sun on the Japanese flag with the sentiments of this song.

  • Sorry, maningreen7.

In my mind I dislike the Japanese national flag. Here many of us think so because the flag is the symbol of feudalism and bad nationalism.

What I wanted to say is that Mary sang this song in the live at Osaka where her family were attending and heard she singing this there then (maybe).

  • I'm surprised her dad allowed her to record a song about a house of Ill repute!Anyone got the sddress!

  • Why her dad against?

Mary sang this song at the live Osaka 1970. She accompanied her parents and a sister then.

Sad story but very beautiful song. I felt/also now think her cover is the best.

  • After I have wrote this, I have compared this with "my heard" Osaka Expo '70 version.

Mary did not song whole the song then. She escaped the portion "my mother was a tailor...my father was a gambling man..."

  • This arrangement is similar to the one on Live in Japan CD

    Quite different from the animals...

    Both very good

  • From which TV programme is this taken?

  • This is not from a TV show.

  • 5+Star's! Great performance!

    Great share, Tomoya! Thanks!

    Very best of wishes, all!

    GinMillBill

  • Very very nice!

Mary sang this at Osaka Expo 1970.

I AM gathering some photos of Streetcars (directopm "Desire" should be preferred?) in The City of New Orleans...

  • Another wonderful cover version I never heard before. Can you tell me whether this song had ever been released as single (B side) or not? Thanks for posting.

  • No sadly ...

But we can live in hope that maybe she did record it and perhaps it will appear in the future!
