Thank you sir , so much ..I felt I needed a partner for this,..but in the meant time I "grew up" got ready for such training and made her climb a tree or sort of jump in my hands then over me.
@Xx2revolver3xX ... yeah, just use a consistent command like "up." At the point where you are going from the chair to your back, it can be very helpful to have a friend pat you on your back (as you are bent over) and give the up command to the dog and help the dog feel safe on your back. Any success on this is, of course, praised and/or treated. I recommend that as you bend over, you put your hands on your knees to form a bridge and spare your low back. Layers of clothes = less claw scratch.
@cosmomatic100 ... try food or whatever reward your dog likes (a toy? a treat) and start with up onto a set item such as a chair or footstool. Partay!
try lying down at first and have someone coax him on your back once he seems comfortable doing that get one your hands and knees once again have some help you and when he's comfortable with that than stand up to do the trick
@2683mmw ... I recommend wearing multiple layers. If you're serious, you will need a vest of some sort. With dogs that really scratch, I wear a poly scuba diving vest under my shirt. It's hot but it keeps you from being scratched. Be careful of your low back, especially if you dog is medium to large sized.
I have a tiny dog and it was kinda hard to lure her onto my back so I started with her going from the couch onto my back so she knew that getting on my back got her a reward and I'm not moving to the floor and she is doing great. Thought i would throw that out there in case anyone else was having the same problem Thanks for the video, keep them coming.
@cjweyrauch ... that's awesome. A variation would be to work with a partner, having the dog walk from one person's back to another. I'm very glad you enjoyed this.
@Wtflolyay ... Yeah, this trick is from a Captain Haggerty book. It is a cool trick but it's actually very easy to train. Probably the one thing to be aware is that some dogs have vertigo or fear of being perched upon a less than stationary object.
@topdoggirl12510 ... Yes. But are you ready for it? The dog in the vid weighs about 50 lbs. If you and your dog are in good shape, go for it. Be ready to get some scratches on your back, and be careful about straining your low back. The handler takes most of the abuse in this trick.
Nice breakdown of the behavior. For anyone teaching this I would be aware of your reward placement. Mark the dog when they are on your back, AND feed the dog while on your back. Dogs do "hang out" where the rewards occur, so using this to your advantage will help speed things up.
I had to favorite this one. I'm going to try it with Clover, my smallest dog, but I don't know if we'll be ale to pull it off. She's up to 60 pounds now! Chilly is 80 pounds so she's out of the question with this trick! =)
Years ago, when Blue was more active and we were training and competing a lot, I took my shirt off at the local swimming pool displaying some nasty back stall scratches. Raised a few eyebrows with the country club set that day. With some dogs a heavy sweatshirt is enough. Lots of disc doggers use neoprene scuba diving vests.
Have fun. Your border collies can do this. Be careful with the young one, as you don't want to jar her growth plates before they're set. Oh, and wear a heavy sweat shirt. Give me a shout if you have any Q's.
Lol I used to do this when my dog was at a lighter weight. Now he is at 45lbs and he is breaking my back. I am weak

@kikiveto123 ... it's not important if your dog will or won't do this. Have fun. It's just kind of a fun thing to try.

When my dog jumps on my back, she digs her claws into me, do you have any advice on how to keep this trick from hurting my back? Thanks!

Love this! Love the breakdown, the clear instructions, and the sense of humor. I'm looking forward to trying this with my border collie!

Love it but I think it is impossible for me with my dogs. I have Rotties and I am a fairly small woman. Great job though.

Please see Rule #2 -- don't hurt yourself. Have fun, but don't hurt yourself. Thanks for visiting.

My dog can't walk up stairs (on her back paws), so your dog is actually one up on mine.
