Growing up in the 60s/70s I saw alot of this kind of naff shit. A significant part of "entertainment" was all about this, ie. white people taking the piss out of black people. Not only the Minstrels, but many mainstream comedians had material which would be considered offensive today. Then again, people are so much more uptight and quick to take offense todaty. At the time the most common reaction would probably have been a roll of the eyes and a tut/chuckle.
Why call ms Keys racist, thats dum, sure this song is dun in extremely bad taste!
But any1 who finds the black an white mistrels ofensive should chekout historical fact.
White people blacked out their faces wen black people said that the music they were singin was only 4 black people so thats why that blacked out their face.
I cant stand racists or people who cant c past the colour of sum1s face or who cant c past the colour of dem own botty.
The reason the Black and White minstrels performed in Black Face was so as not to scare the women and children by having a real Black 'savage' performing in close proximity to them. it ran counter to their propaganda; this is 'historical fact.' Real Black ppl could only perform at Black clubs or JUST the TOP-SHELF white clubs, those for the rich only.
Sandie, herself, was a victim of her times, not a racist in any way.
What the!? Although it has some dated charm, this foolishness is like the Black and White Minstrels without the face paint and afro wigs! Actually the Black and White Minstrels were much more offensive!

Which recordcompany took this scarecrow in front of a mcirphone. They must have been on to something very bad. It is really one of the worst versions of this songs I have ever heard!
Yes, it may appear a bit silly but bear in mind that this is from a UK light variety show in the early 1970's and was the kind of thing that was done regularly. Watch the other clip of Sandie singing 'One/Without Him' which was from the same show and you will see a much better song.
I am very sorry and because I'm English, I must apoligise to the whole wild world for this total-crap rubbish.. I will now hide away for 20 years...and do 10,000 hail Mary's
I totally agree with you,but I am more than sure that in your country you have worse and more stinking crap (as you say) than this ,particularly in the 70's.And yet you never hid away in spite of your age.
you're dead right it is a stupid song and the orchestration is awful too;Sandie never recorded this number --- thank God for that !!!! she just sang it on this 70's show and you can tell she's a bit bored doing it ,inspite of the gorgeous smile upon her face. She hated those variety shows- not her thing really. She looks anf sounds marvellous on the other number from the same show though.
