The final death toll was well over 5000. It was the most serious incident of the war and was a factor in bringing it to an end a few months later. The town itself was pretty rebellious, full of army deserters and recently there had been demos condemning both sides in the war. So on March 17th, 1988, in order to crush the occupation and Halabja's rebellious inhabitants,the Iraqi regime bombarded the town with chemical weapons(cyanide and mustard nerve gas, manufactured in the West, especially by the German company A.G.Farben, and sold to Saddam)Thousands died instantly and among the casualties were workers,students,children and conscripts.
At that time the Kurdistan Nationalist Front had an agreement with Khomeini and his Iranian government, who'd promised them some kind of Kurdish autonomy. Together they planned to "liberate" Halabja, a town of 100,000 people which was about 36 kilometers from the Iranian border. With that in mind, they occupied it. The Iraqi army was weak in the Halabja region and basically only in situ to keep the Kurds down, its offensive might concentrated in the middle and south of Iraq.
During the Iran/Iraq war, when the Americans were taking the side of the Iraqi army -which had the upper hand, the Iranian government tried to open up a new front.

So on March 17th, 1988, in order to crush the occupation and Halabja's rebellious inhabitants,the Iraqi regime bombarded the town with chemical weapons(cyanide and mustard nerve gas, manufactured in the West, especially by the German company A.G.Farben, and sold to Saddam)Thousands died instantly and among the casualties were workers,students,children and conscripts.

At that time the Kurdistan Nationalist Front had an agreement with Khomeini and his Iranian government, who'd promised them some kind of Kurdish autonomy. Together they planned to "liberate" Halabja, a town of 100,000 people which was about 36 kilometers from the Iranian border. With that in mind, they occupied it. The Iraqi army was weak in the Halabja region and basically only in situ to keep the Kurds down, its offensive might concentrated in the middle and south of Iraq.

landbridge : It's not possible to compare Hiroshima/Nagasaki with Halabja. Hiroshima/Nagasaki was based on decisions at a grand stratgeic level. Halabja was an atrocity committed by Saddam because of vacillating Western policy during the regional Iran Iraq war. US supported Iraq in the war, the US did not want Iran weakened. The Russians were fighting in Afghanistan at the time, a weakened Iran was not a "desirable" option to the West. This allowed Iran to demostrate power, leading to Halabjah.

Why do i think that? because first of all, the area of where estimated 40 millions KURDS exist in is divided into the major oil city's, such as kirkuk, if there is a an election this year, kirkuk will be voted as a independent kurdish city. The part were today is called "Kurdistan" near the border of IRAQ, is 50x times calmer and more stable than IRAQ,terrorists cant get through, neither will they let them, cause for one they got something valuable, that IS SUPPOSED to be theirs.

The Turks are hypocrites. Believe it or not Kurds in Iraq have been given more rights than their fellow Kurds in Turkey, hence why Iraqi Kurdistan is thriving, whereas Turkish Kurdistan is impoverished.
The PKK may have resorted to terrorism, but their provocation is due to something, i.e. persecution from the Turkish authorities. Secondly, when do you ever see the Kurdish regional flag flying in Turkey? Never.

When Mesopotamia/Iraq became under the control of a British Mandate (effectively just a polished term for 'colony') and thus part of the empire, the Kurds finally saw it as a means of getting their own state. The British refused, as Pan-Arabism/Arab-nationalism were growing at the time, which opposed western imperialism. The Kurds are the underdogs, and being both Kurdish and Arab I am fortunate enough to have found the middle path.

My father studied in London in the 70s, and came back to the UK in the 80s. After he finished, he decided for us to stay. Can you think whyyyyy???
One of his brothers was forced into battle like so many others during the 1980s and was killed. And two years after Halabja, one of my Kurdish uncles was made to fight FOR Saddam against Kuwait. Oh, and as a result of Halabja, I have relatives still suffering the after-effects (leukaemia)

A few things: I remember hearing about the gassing in 1990 on American TV (perhaps 60 Minutes). Everyone knows that the reason George Bush Sr. didn't go into Iraq during ODS is because Powell was strongly against it, while Schwarzkopf wanted to attack w/the momentum. Also, even though what happened to the Kurds is atrocious, they seem to be just shooting themselves in the foot now.

Tell me this, why is EU removing/adding PKK off the "terror list"? why is PKK not on U N's "terror list" ?
