  • A "BOB" was a pre decimal 1 Shilling coin. 20 bob (or 20 Shillings) in a pre decimal Pound.

  • Hang on i was bored so i cicked on this , is the girl prerending to be engilish or is she just an american with a dodgy accent , could someone please explain cos she dont sound like shes from anywere in the uk ??

  • It's a portcullis surmounted by a crown - the symbol of Parliament.

  • ohh its a gate

  • Holy crap you're like the British CommunityChannel!

  • 20 Shillings to a £. Our money is also called Sterling. I will tell you something funny. When I was 6 I used to change a £ to 100 pennies in my post office because I thought I would have more.

  • You know what? I hate to be shallow but so be it. I am infatuated with your youtube presentation of yourself. It's your obvious intelligence wrapped in your delicious rendition of your british accent. Plus, you're quite lovely. I don't know what else to say, so yeah...thanks for being on youtube. :)

  • As I recall, Adam Smith was the father of modern economics.

  • Also we have phrases in London like:

    score(£20) - pony(£25) - ton(£100) - monkey(£500)

  • 'Yeah I'm sure people are all gonna go, like, "Oh maybe you should have done some research Paperlilies" Well you know what? How about you make this video?!' - - - - > Maybe you should have left it to someone else because you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Also, it's funny that for someone who is so obviously British has been Americanised... what's with sayin "like" all the time and finishing your sentences on a high note? Seriously, sort it out.

  • HAHA In America "In God we trust" is on the currency, in Britain they have Charles Darwin. LOL

  • @TheArnez6: But we also have a religious leader on all of the Bank of England notes as well.

  • If you are going to explain it, then get the facts straight.

  • It was 20 shillings to a pound not 12. I'm American but I no a lot about uk money. Not trying to rub anything in.

  • Honk Honk! sweet vid lol

  • wait, so £10= £20? because i dont know if i heard wrong but i thought you said that one pound equals lol. But anyway, ur awsome and i love british people!

  • Who uses the phrase 'Bob' anymore? because we don't. £1 = one pound/ quid £5 = five pounds/ fiver £10 = ten pounds/ tenner £1000 = one thousand pounds/ a grand. Most British people say the phrase 'quid' quite often and people who are unfamiliar, foreign or new to the country usually say pounds and that way you know they are probably not from the country, so say 'quid' instead if you ever visit.

  • Pathidic money in the furter every one will use credits

  • In the USA we use dollars and qiuters u us pathdic

  • Also, Paperlillies, Adam Smith was the founder of Capitalism. And he was Scottish, so I don't know why you lot have him on your money.

  • @sabradan Because the scotland uses the the Sterling currency aswell, this money is usable in all of Great Britain; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • Yeah, Buckingham palace is a fairly boring building, shame it's not something more like the houses of Parliament, love that style of building.

One of the other residences for the queen is probably the most impressive, Windsor castle. The largest inhabited castle in the world, quite cool.

  • 4 X Farthings = one penny. 12 pennies = one shilling. 20x shillings = one pound. thus 240 pennies = one pound. The UK went decimal on February 15, 1971.

  • shut up you greasy sket

  • the welsh national flower is a daffodil, not a leak

  • How is a leek a flower?

  • @toweronepower It's the national symbol of Wales

  • So whats the order? From the least amount of money to the greatest amount? and what are the symbols for each? America rlly only has $1 or .99. lol. so simple.

    luv ya girl

  • @FranticWon1 It goes 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, 1 pound, 2 pounds, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 50 pounds, 100 pounds.

  • USA!!!!! F the queen

  • its not called a securit swal its called a security thread

  • @papermoney54 srry by swal i meant seal

  • @papermoney54 there was a typo when i was typing the word seal

  • by the way - a bob is not a pound it was an old shilling, equivalent to 5 pence in decimal currency

  • All British Notes were, and still are different sizes and colours, and have contained incresingly intricate anti-copyright tactics, as the forgers got increasingly smarter and smarter in their coipying of the bank notes.

I sure hope that this has helped confused Americans, and others too when trying to fathom out the confusing English currency.

England is a fantastic place to visit, just make sure your wallet is VERY VERY VERY thick, because it's expensive

  • That's it for the coins, next we have the ten shilling (bob) note, or half a quid. This was brown on white and, as the name implies was worth ten shillings, and there were 2 to the pound. Children wound frequently get a ten shilling note of aunts or uncles for Christmas, Mom's n Dads would give em a pound note.

Next up was the 1 pound note, this was still legal tender way past the date of decimalisation, and was comparitively recently changed to the pound coin.

  • Next we have the 2 shilling piece 2 bob piece or florrin, this was a silver coin and as the name implies worth 2 shillings, the florrin was the forerunner of the 2 shilling piece but was worth the same amount.

Next up we had something called the half crown, this was worth 2shillings & sixpence or half a crown which was worth five shillings

Next up was the Crown an silver coin not seen very often in general use, but was still nevertheless legal tender and as said above worth 5 shillings

  • Next up is the threepenny bit, this was a very unusual shape, a duodecagon (12 sided coin) It was originally made of silver later changed to copper.

Next we have the sixpennce sixpennny bit sixpenny piece or tannner, this was originally made of pure silver but later changed to a silver alloy with decreasing amounts of silver as the price went steadily upwards.

Next up is the shilling, or bob, again this was a silver coin, there were 12 pennies to the shilling, & 20 shillings to the pound

  • OK starting from the bottom, we have the farthing there were 4 of these to a penny.

Then we have a hapenny, This is a shortened form of Half-penny, and obviously there were 2 to a penny.

Next up is the penny (if you ever watch any old sixties brit tv series and a character says "they have to spen a penny" this comes from the fact that all public toilets (restrooms) charged 1 penny to use the facility, it considerably more than that now)

  • OK to help every body out here, the PREDECIMAL currency is the one that masam was asking about, and is the one that confuses most Americans. As this delightful lady carrectly said this was abolished back in the 60's and now the Pound (aka quid or knicker) it also has many other nicknames, as I am sure your dollar has.

I will endeavour to explain the PREDECIMAL currency in as many replies as it takes

  • n i think thats church hill on the back of the 20 quid i think

  • euros look like monopoly money on shrooms

  • nine sides are a nonagon and eight is octogon seven completely forgot

  • I'll trade you your queen for our american president, I'd rather have her for my overlord.

  • I'm English, so naturally I know all this, and am currently struggling with why I bothered watching this video

  • @jrpc2007 i am thinking that exactly lol

  • yeah the euro version is the opposite its like silver on the out side and gold on the inside on a 1 euro coin or is it 2

  • I MADE MY OWN VIDEO! its got nice random facts and that, its called BRITISH MONEY its by atomicnortherner so youtube me! x

  • PAPERLILIES thanks for keeping it real lol! =D

  • you are so true about buckingham palace being so boring! ITS UGLY! I don't know if youve ever gone to Portmerion in wales but thats sooooo much prettior than that portakabin of a type building the queen lives in! haha

  • @TheKate1098 buck house is indeed a bit dull the gates are over elaborate for such a basic building... it should be a white picket woo fence with a wooden gate with one of them lachey snecky locky things on it!

  • u r wrong about the bob .. 10 bob is 50 Pence ! a quid is one pound ! and its a shame u dont know Adam Smith ... but maybe this is because u didnt go to uni ?

  • Lol I would have to agree with you that would be creepy, having your face everywhere. That's why in America we put dead people on our money. But with the way things are going here Obama will be on it soon.. Haha the only reason I say that is because he's on shoes, shirts, pants, I think I even saw an Obama tooth bruch, grills which may be spelled wrong, but idiot's put them on there teeth & ect... Heck he may even be on a Gold coin not sure though cause I'd never waste my money on a coin!

  • erm...20 shillings to the pound, and what a load of egoid gibberish, could only manage one minute.

  • Should have shown them some Scottish money; a lot nicer than the English notes in my opinion!

PS, as a Scottish person, I'd like to agree with the people below saying that Adam Smith shouldn't be on the English note! Our own money's already used to commemorate people such as Rabbie Burns, Sir Alexander Fleming and Lord Kelvin. And, indeed, Adam Smith on the old Clydesdale £50 note. (Although he doesn't look any better on that note; he actually looks a bit like ET...)

  • 'One does find it amusing' :)

Well done. Watermark demonstration works fine. However, the predecimalisation

system is scary. Farthings, Crowns, Guineas, Sovereigns ...very confusing.

  • @fisterB It's really quite easy :) Counting the coins of the 20th century, there was a farthing, half penny (pronounced "ha'penny") penny, 3 pence, six pence (a "tanner") a shilling (a "bob"), a florin, half crown, and crown. A sovereign was a gold coin with a value of one pound, and a half soveregin was half a pound. A guinea was 1 pound, and 1 shilling. Four farthings or two half pennys made a penny, 12 pence was a shilling, and there were 12 shillings in a pound. (cont).

  • @fisterB (BTW, 20 shillings in a pound. Sorry for the typo) Two shillings made a florin, and two and a half shillings (two shillings, six pence, written as 2/6) made a half crown. Two half crowns, or five shillings, made a crown, so there were four crowns in a pound. See, I told you it was simple.

  • heh i completely agree about buckingham pallace looking boring, so true

  • Love your accent. Even if you were to talk gibberish it would sound intelligent. :)

  • As I was only little, I can only remember the little coins and you could get 4 little chews for a 'apenny'. If I was lucky, I would get a thrupenny bit to spend!

  • its called a security thread not a security seal

  • The Leek is associated with Wales because way, way back in the day, Welsh warriors wore Leeks on their bodies like badges, to distinguish themselves form their enemies. Why Leeks? Dunno. Because they were there i guess. You wouldn't pin a bloody cabbage to yourself would ya lol.

  • Edward Elgar was the previous image on the £20 and I think Elizabeth Fry is still on the £5 and Good Ol' Charlie Darwin is on The £10.

In all my life, I've only ever seen a £50 and never handeled it. They're mostly used in banks for large transactions. And there's also the £5 coin but that was like a limited edition coin but I'd like to think they would issue it nationwide soon but I doubt it.

  • @FreakinSweet86

    Ha ha a , only ever seen a £50 ???

get a job and take your weeks wages from the counter in the bank ask for 50's , enjoy : )

  • the building on the £20 note is the Bank of England, it's not buckingham bloody palace.

  • Adam smith was some scottish dude, he should not be on money issued by the bank of england!

  • GO BRITAIN! cool video, I'm from Canada and I only knew about the pound and schillings

  • I do not have a £20 note on me at the moment, but that building on the front looks more like The Bank of England to me - rather than Buckingham Palace. I could be wrong, and often am........especially when it comes to money !

  • My fiancé is English and he's tried to explain your money to me, but I feel so dumb, math isn't my best subject so learning your money is tough, but that's just me, I'm slow. I'll get it. I should have kept this to myself... :)

  • that is not buckingham palace, this is bank of england, freemasons, illminati do some research....

  • >_> the research said nto to ask this -_-

  • One of my best friends recently went to London, and I instructed her that she was bring me back something that was British, made in England, and could not be found here in the States. She returned with a 10 pound note. It makes a nice addition to my US dollar bill that has a photo of Dudley Moore on it.

  • Don't understand why Adam Smith is on the £20 note in England. He was Scottish, after all. And yes, on the 2p coin it is the Prince of Wales....Emblem, I guess?

  • Adam Smith wrote "Wealth of Nations", he's an economist, but really all he did was gather opinions from other economists and put them into a cohesive, overarching theory. I'm learning about him in International Political Economy.

  • Let me clear up this shilling thing cos someone has commented twice on here thinking he is an expert but really he is not very clever. The shilling WAS done away with in 1971 when the UK went decimal, however some old shilling coins were still allowed to circulate until 1990 with a value of 5p cos they were the same size as the old 5p coin (which did NOT still say one shilling on the back btw). Anyone born after 1971 wouldn't have noticed those coins cos officially all prices were in decimal.

  • Brits should bring back the shilling just to confuse the hell out of everyone.

  • She didn't even mention the £5 note!

  • USA money easy ues

  • you forgot the 5 pound coin. i only found out they existed about a month ago.

  • Queen's nose was amazing :)

  • the pound coin with a leak?

    you taking the pee?

  • dont make a 9.31 minute video one of many mistakes

you just make yourself look like an idiot

  • lol i like this video tbh, im english and have no clue how the hell that shillings bollocks worked, glad im only 18! ps. any critics on here giving it large, well, you can all suck my meaty leek. ty. 5* btw

  • One shilling was 5 pence and was still in use untill 1990 and was very simple!do your research before talking rubbish.

  • 10p

  • The shilling was five pence!dont you remember the old five pence or the old ten pence?the older ones still said one shilling on the back and the ten said two shillings on the back!do your research before talking rubbish. The shilling was still in use untill 1990 fact!!!!!

  • i thought they changed all that in 1971 but i dunno really thats wat i was told

  • shut the fuck up you english prick

  • shes betta than u at videos

  • The national flower of Wales is a daffodil.

The leek is the Welsh national "plant" or something??

Same way our national "plant" is the oak, but our flower is a red rose.

    I think that's right.

  • she missed out that british money has no true value ans is no longer worth anything, its just a form of credit

money used to have its worth in gold and silver, as did the american dollar. Try going to a bank today with £100 and asking for its worth in gold/silver you will be kindly booted up the arse out of the building

  • lol, i loved the Queens nose!

  • This girl is absolutely gorgeous

  • how much is £60 in canadian

  • Thats why our citys are voted number 1..

    Dumbarse, Shut the fuck up.

  • a hunner pound notes ae biggest wan ya dafty ? naw a £50 =)) ?

  • wow u know alot about the history of money! i found it quite interesting, u should make a vid about it :)

  • Bob is not £1 its 5p! thats why "10 bob" is 50p! (people still say 10 bob up here in Barnsley, but we're behind lol)

  • Adam Smith was very important, the division of labour is the only thing I remember from economics

  • You didn't have a £50 note!

  • canadian money has the queen all over it to, i don't think its on every bill, those are left for our past priminsters i believe, but on the back of our loonies, toonies, quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies she's there. i notcie on our coins aswell that she seems to age along with them lol

  • Decimilisation day was in 1971. Before that, 12 pence (d) made a shilling (s). 20 shillings made a pound, so there were 240 pence to a pound. There was other values such as the florin, which was 2 shillings, or todays 10p.

The guy on the old £20 note was Sir Edward Elgar.

The 20p shape is a heptagon!

  • Adam Smith wrote "The Wealth of Nations," one of the first books on economics. Often cited, never read.

  • I think it would a septagon??? Maybe, i dont know. 7 in french is sept, so.

  • lol so funny go queen go oww and we dnt have a £100 note lol and yes it is very very very VERY exspenise to live in the england lol went to the USA it was $3.50 for a big mac ummy and then back in the UK it's £3.49 or $7ish AAAAAAA!!!! for a big mac bad times lol

  • Is there a one hundred pound note?

  • tubeviews [dot net] finally, a way for your video to be seen.

This rox... Thank you very much.

  • errm..... a leek's a vegetable.

The national flower of wales is a daffodil

    LOL

  • I only watched this while i was patching SWG and i Think your "Cute" well GL

  • Wow drinks are way more money there! You can get an Arizona in Canada (or the US) for 99 cents. But I guess it doesn't seem like as much when you pay with a pound. But a bottle of coke for a buck is a lot! At least it is where I live! Ugh so confusing ...

  • In my corner shop a can of coke would be 60p, a bottle would be like, 75.

  • she has completely ignored the Scottish and Irish sterling banknotes! completely different to the english notes, but all the same value. all legal tender in any part of the UK

  • ahem ireland is not a part of the UK were apart of the euro €€€€

  • Sorry I meant N. Irish not Irish of course which is in the eurozone of course! And we love the Euro. why the UK wont join is beyond me. aragh Typical lol

  • No one cares about scottish and irish money, we hate the scottish and irish, the irish especially, we only hate them because they hate us, IRA? heard of them?, well them fuckers murdered two of our british soldiers just because they was in ireland...just pointing out something, no offense to you.

  • wow....still confused....... American money is soooo much easier to count , and to keep track of....

  • Why is it easier to count.

Just one pound = 100 pence.

Whatever mixture of 1,2,5,10,20 and 50p's for a pound.

5 pounds in 5 pounds Yeah!

    10 pounds in 10 pounds!

    x]

  • The Bank of England has never ever been owned by anyone who is Brit-ish, Fact!(it's just a NAME).The real name should be called, the Bank of*Lord Rothchilds(Bankster)The Evil Enslavers!.Ok,every(98%)countr ies currency is based on gold/Silver,and the Rothchilds owned all the gold mines in the world.Who Controls the money con-trols the worlds economy. You will find the root of ALL Evil(Wars,SlaveTaxes, child poverty) dwells here in the UK,please don't believe me research on youtube:New World Order

  • Overlord....LOL

  • hi Bryony :)

i am planing a trip to london and i am canadian, so i need some ideas what to expect in price differences from here to there lol

like how much is a bottle of coke/pepsi in UK

or a big mac combo at mcdonalds, that kind of everyday stuff

i would appreciate anyones help on this :) thanks

  • bottles of coke/pepsi are usually about a pound which is like 2 dollars, or you can get a can for 50p which is like 1 dollar. not too sure about mcdonalds though..

  • Mcdonalds big bac meal, £3.99, which is around $8....but the large meal here is equivalent to your small there LMAO

in Central london, a bottle coke is £1.40 - £1.60 depends what shop u get it from, which is almost $3.

Can coke/Pepsi in central london is £0.55 - £0.65, also depends on shop.

which is equi. to around $1.10 - $1.30.

If your not in central london, can coke £0.50 - £0.49, bottle coke £0.99 - £1.00

  • bottle of coke £1.50

    big mac £1

  • HAHA same thing with the White House in America, its so national and historic but its really plain, ugly, and boring looking.

  • "maybe you should of done sum research"

    "you make this damn video"

    haha tell em gril!!

  • I've read that hundreds of years ago, 240 pennies weighed a pound, so they made paper money for "One pound" equaling 240 cents. Interesting !

  • Hey, im also from England but i just wanted to say a 'bob' is 5p because when people say '10 bob' it actually means 50p

Jus thought id let you know

    :D

    Btw nice vid :D

  • I loooove that you have darwin on the back of the £10 note, further proof that y'all are smarter than us. :OOO

  • @animilautrec omg, if we did that the religious would have a hissy fit

  • OMG!!! so many coins, such a problem. Why didnt you just take the coin that all Europe uses now? But thanks for the info xD

  • we brits are proud of our stirling, its a bit of a national symbol lol. it was doing quite well in the excange 2 till the credit cruch. now the dollar and pound are getting ass whooped by the Euro

  • heptagon :) one more side than a hexagon that has 6

  • How about a video of you just sitting and looking at the camera, cause damn, you are cute

  • I thought this video was interesting. I've been to 12 different European countries myself and have a coin collection as a result. Although, I didn't think it was very hospitable for you to say his/her question was "DUMB" toward the end of your video. Bad form.

  • Unlike dollar coins, I also noticed that British coins have front and back sides pointing the same upward direction.

  • hahaha 01:49 crackes me up...hahah

  • Someone should of told the yanks our money is not £1 = 100pence, as now, in this day and age a £1 will only buy you about 53pence worth...

The rapid decline in our monetary system can be traced by to ANY ancient historical event where the monetary system was used to keep and empire going, it NEVER works.

Now the American dollar is crashing, the Euro WORTHLESS, and even the Great British pound is only worth 38pence... Do you see what is happening, DON'T listen to the government, not ever!

  • XD "a seven sided square"

  • Uhh scottish have £100 note

  • il pay 20 quid to get naked with u

  • the building on the £20 note is not buckingham palace, its the white house if u look closely

  • In fact its the Bank of England

  • I'll pay 6 quid to kiss you.

  • yeah, the Buckingham Palace was kinda boring, im from American and i went to London and places like that :D

  • Haha you cracked me up that was funny on how people will react in a few years lol...

  • It's a HEPTAGON. :) It has the good property of it having a constant radius. Also a bob is a shilling, otherwise known as 5p.

  • Did you know that technically it is illegal to carry British money in your back pocket? The idea being that you're wearing the queen's face on your arse! Really.

  • irish not enlged

  • "Oh, maybe you should have done some research paperlilies!"

'Well you know what? How about YOU make this video.'

    lol.

  • Im British so I already new this but I watched this anyway good video!

  • thats a counterfeit

  • And that isn't Buckingham Palace of the front of the £20 - Its the Bank of England you fool!

  • she said she didnt do research on this faglord

  • Maybe you should go back to school, girlfriend!!! You are showing your age. This is more likely to confuse than educate....

  • Hey, I remember watching your videos a while back. My face lighted up when I saw you again. :)

  • i think the leek is something to do with satisfying their women or something, they like their leeks

u crack me up when you talk in the queens voice lol good vid seeing as you did it off of your head

  • welsh national flower is a dafodil, i think the leeks are used to satisfy their women or something im not sure im english

  • Welsh soldiers used to wear leeks on their uniforms so they could identify themselves on the battlefield. It also has something to do with St David i think. I'm Welsh and i don't even know myself. Anyway i'm off to shag a sheep.

  • lmfao looooooooooooool

  • Buckingham palace looks great!

  • Edward Elgar did not compose Jerusalem it was written by Blake, music added by Parry.

  • Not to like...well insult ya.

    But you are seriously dumb.

  • errr maybe on the planet ZOG it was but back in england (pre 1971) it was 240 pennys to the pound! it's simple really. 1 penny coin 3 pence coin 6 pence coin 1 shilling coin(scotland and england had there own designs)worth 12 pennies 2 shilling coin half a crown coin(2 shillings and six pence) crown(five shillings) ten shilling note 1 pound note 5 pound note 10 pound note 20 pound note
  • DAMM! i forgot the farthing 1/4 of a penny

and the half penny 1/2 penny

    sorry for that!

  • hey cool vid oh and here in the states we do write the amont of the bundel on the bill most of the time on the side though

  • our art techinician helped design all of the earo notes and british notes.

  • woah your guys's money is so much prettier than america's

  • 2 euro is silver in the middle and gold on the outside (:

  • 2 euro is 'silver' on the outside and 'gold' in the middle.

1 euro is gold on the outside and 'silver' in the middle

  • that light is burning my retina

  • olooll our ruler and ovelrord

  • lets just say we all like money!

    Amen to that!

  • hears a thought...cn someone explain american currency...it confuzzles me...

  • Cough cough, English money may have the queens head but the Scottish notes don't. There are also £1 and £100 notes.

  • I am American. I just dont understand how a country like Britain w
