  • How fast was she going? We were behind royal scots grey hauling 10 mk2's, a mk1 and a class 47 and she averaged 95mph up shap!

  • If I were watching this on tape, I'd have stretched the section 20 to 28 out! Hair raising and I don't have any hair!

  • Superb vid and sound!! Maybe the gent on the platform dragging the suitcase had a life changing experience.

  • Steam isn't really my cup of tea, but non the less cracking video! I love the reaction of the bloke with the suitcase! :)

  • Excellent clip. I love the blokes reaction pulling his suitcase when she comes storming through!!

  • Pendolino? Who needs a Pendlino !

  • Absolute beast! Ace.

  • Duchess of Sutherland was and is a fine locomotive. I went up Shap and back across the S&C behind her for a birthday present, and I enjoyed every minute.

  • I love the incongruity of the passenger with an "airline suitcase" watching the steam loco rush by. Also the reflections of the carriage sin the vending machine (right of screen towards the end). CG.

  • your videos are so inspiring! what an atmospheric veiw!

  • @SteamATwork Many thanks for the kind comment and apologies for the slow reply! Best wishes, David.

  • I'm not really into 'kettles' but this made my hair stand on end. Fantastic. Thanks for capturing the moment.

  • Great video! Liked! :)

  • Gee who doesn't allow things to be played on an iPad!

  • Gosh, now I seem to spend a lot of time spannering over steam videos on here and that was by far the best I've seen, not just a record of somebody being there but more like a bijou featurette!

  • Who says steam would not be up to the Job !!!!

  • Who needs Pendelino's anyway!!

Excellent, brings back memories of the curve through Lichfield!

  • that would of scared the shit out of me

  • Amazing footage!

  • very nice!

  • Truely beautiful shots there, 10/10. Awe inspiring and beautiful locomotive doing what she was built for, hope to see her again as soon as she's re-instated.

  • Great video its worth watching the guy with the suitcase he couldn't believe what he was seeing.Great shot.

  • I love the way that the guy with the suitcase stood stock still as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing :-)

  • great high speed shot mate, that guy pulling a wheeled case got a bit of a surprise , good of him to stand well back or was he frightened by it?. Cheers.

  • Brilliant video. I've just uploaded a record of her antics at Stirling that day.

  • Penrith is a great location to capture the power of steam close-up. Smashing David. What a great feat for the Duchess shortly before her temporary withdrawal. And the crew as well of course. Chris

  • @khankadet Thanks Chris - a fitting farewell all round! Cheers, David.

  • @khankadet do u know what speed she got up to on Shap and how steep the gradient is? Really good video. Shame about her withdrawral and the fact that a lot of steam locomotives are breaking down-or semi breaking down as usually they can get back on their own power unlike modern trains.

  • Not that I'm given to hyperbole, but your videos transcend their subject matter. Really fantastic pieces of art in their own right. Superb.

  • @mintygreen That's one of the nicest comments I've ever had - thanks so much, it means a lot. Best wishes, David.

  • Excellent vid,,cant beat a good night shot of steam...

  • What a catch, well done. 5★

  • he did have a v/good day, cheers

  • @stephengthompson Thanks Steve - the Duchesses just ooze power, and they can appear to be a bit arrogant with some climbs! Great to see her at full pelt. Cheers, David.

  • Excellent footage. "My" Duchesses have still got what it takes. Never lets me down or fails to impress. 5*

  • @LMSStanier Thank you; my favourite class of loco when they're in full cry.

  • @Linesider1 Yes, mine too.

  • BEAUTIFUL, Ill be behind her on her last public running day =[ will be helping with the overhaul aswell.

  • @EastMidlandsSteam Thanks; hope you enjoy the trip and all the best for the overhaul; she's a credit to the PRCLT and mainline steam generally.

  • That was most definitely a 5* rating for everything!!! - Well done you! :-)

  • @Bevoin1970 Thank you very much - the Duchess did the hard work for me but luckily I held my nerve!

  • @HitchinTrains Thank you - glad you my incidental footage could be used.

  • Stunning shots. Looks absolutely awesome in the evening gloom. Love the atmospheric shots as well, to build up a mood, then the Duchess comes storming through. Great stuff, no wonder she couldn't pull the Cathedral's Express today, she was still getting her breath back after this awesome run! Congrats to her and the crew for pulling that record-breaking run off :)

  • @TangmereTornado Thank you very much.
