Duchess of Sutherland was and is a fine locomotive. I went up Shap and back across the S&C behind her for a birthday present, and I enjoyed every minute.
I love the incongruity of the passenger with an "airline suitcase" watching the steam loco rush by. Also the reflections of the carriage sin the vending machine (right of screen towards the end). CG.
Gosh, now I seem to spend a lot of time spannering over steam videos on here and that was by far the best I've seen, not just a record of somebody being there but more like a bijou featurette!
Truely beautiful shots there, 10/10. Awe inspiring and beautiful locomotive doing what she was built for, hope to see her again as soon as she's re-instated.
great high speed shot mate, that guy pulling a wheeled case got a bit of a surprise , good of him to stand well back or was he frightened by it?. Cheers.
Penrith is a great location to capture the power of steam close-up. Smashing David. What a great feat for the Duchess shortly before her temporary withdrawal. And the crew as well of course. Chris
@khankadet do u know what speed she got up to on Shap and how steep the gradient is? Really good video. Shame about her withdrawral and the fact that a lot of steam locomotives are breaking down-or semi breaking down as usually they can get back on their own power unlike modern trains.
@stephengthompson Thanks Steve - the Duchesses just ooze power, and they can appear to be a bit arrogant with some climbs! Great to see her at full pelt. Cheers, David.
Stunning shots. Looks absolutely awesome in the evening gloom. Love the atmospheric shots as well, to build up a mood, then the Duchess comes storming through. Great stuff, no wonder she couldn't pull the Cathedral's Express today, she was still getting her breath back after this awesome run! Congrats to her and the crew for pulling that record-breaking run off :)
How fast was she going? We were behind royal scots grey hauling 10 mk2's, a mk1 and a class 47 and she averaged 95mph up shap!

If I were watching this on tape, I'd have stretched the section 20 to 28 out! Hair raising and I don't have any hair!

Not that I'm given to hyperbole, but your videos transcend their subject matter. Really fantastic pieces of art in their own right. Superb.
