Dude, this I like u2, but this song totally rips off the main riff from Johnny Was by Stiff Little Fingers. Both Irish bands...u2 with a punk influence...not hard to put the pieces together....
After all the times I've listened to this song (thousands), I just now heard the little part in the middle where the chorus is chanting "I want to be an air force ranger...". I never understood where that came from, and I'm guessing these guys got it from somewhere else? Regardless, I also never understood why Judd Nelson ran down the hallway yelling the same thing in The Breakfast Club.
@kcirdrab - WTF? This is post-punk at its purest, a brilliant song written in and about a period in Ireland's history that wasn't a good period either. Go listen to NLOTH if you want the samey indie crap they've been turning out for years.
if yall out there know or remember the GDR, then I sure this has a little more meaning than those who dont. A lifetime ago it seems, seperated Germany, Tito in yugoslavia, the kmer rouge in Cambodia. We have no more credible threat that fires life and passion......for now
I never realized that The Edge sang lead vocals on this. He sounds a lot like Bono! Great job on this one, U2. This song is like an old friend from high school that I've recently become reacquainted with.
Wii came to far in this debate to back out now. (katalina translates) Play more, war less. Did you see that soldier training in China who nearly blew himself up with his own grenade? That would suck.
strong start with the drum .....

This is raw unadulterated U2 sound-not that any of their other stuff isn' that too, this just seems to have that "edge" no pun intended.
