Brahms to the ends of the world. A true ambassoder of passion, conviction, idealism, and though in the face of the Neuedeutsche Schule stood in judgement of being backward and irrelevant, fought through and has made him staple in music history. Brahms fur Ewig!
@baritenor81 I can't tell if it's because she's not a native speaker, but she is moving half-phrase by half-phrase without making the long arcs of sentences. It sounds like she is overshaping the small stuff and not shaping the big intention -- maybe that is what sounds "mannered." Sure is a beautiful big instrument, though.
i started singing this in my lessons with a teacher who thought I was basically a mezzo in training...and I love it x100.....now my new teacher thinks I'm absolutely NOT a mezzo and took it off my rep list.....but for my recital...I want it back .....its so beautiful
@lacantanteavocado That's silly, dear. You don't have to be a mezzo or a baritone to sing this. You can pull the vocal colors you need to differentiate the two people in the song with any kind of voice. They're just two young people. It comes in high and low keys -- see which one works.
@manthasagittarius yeah I know - my newer teacher just wanted to work on my higher notes because she thought that my old teacher was ruining me. I didn't get to sing it for the recital, but maybe one day - We'll see :)
It is so hard to success in singing Lieder after having so many great german singers performed this, but her interpretation is very good and individual.
Uhm, that woman is not German. And I think she's not singing so...clean, if you know what I mean. Her voice would be better for opera, she's not good at the Lied-genre, in my opinion.

nice video, thank. I'd like to know what are the paints at the beginning (at 0:10 approximately) and the one at 2:45, and who are the painters...

Thrilling, beautifully-colored voice, but I agree the interpretation, although interesting, doesn't have the wild abandon I prefer to hear.

Too fussy and mannered for my taste.

Lots of sopranos sing this too! Same with male voices. Go ahead and sing it.
