@Surreydodger - I think it is based on the joke about the wife with a pillow with yes on one side and no on the other. Depending on whether she was in the mood to "entertain" her husband, she had the pillow showing "yes" or "no". The joke here is probably to indicate that Mongo sleeps with the bull, and depending on how it is lying, whether "yes" or "no" is showing, and Mongo's luck is in!

@surreydodger It has to do with truck drivers of that era telling other drivers to pass them on the left (the "Yes" side) and not on the right (the "No" side). It was a way for drivers of 18-wheelers to help keep other drivers "honest" and ensure that people didn't get into the habit of passing each other on the right. Not sure what they did in other countries where it's OK to pass on the right but not the left, however.

@matrixinterface It's a stunt horse. They're as carefully trained as any stunt man or woman. Watch the horse's foot work as Mongo approaches; it's getting ready to fall. The stunt rider, not the actor, pulls hard on the right rein to signal; that's why it's a long camera shoot rather than a close up. That moment was rehersed many times before it was filmed.

You can also tell it's almost certainly a stuntman and not the normal actor, they make sure you can't see his face at all. I imagine the stuntman just has to be careful how he's got his leg situated so that when the horse goes down the extra pressure/weight doesn't injure anything.

(For the uninitiated who may be looking in: Mongo Santamaria was an Afro-Cuban jazz musician who had a hit with the song "Watermelon Man" in the 1960s.) Major kudos to you for getting the joke!
