Softlystroll - wholly agree, this is (quite rightly) a classic, a mix of hopelessness and helplessness with a great clincher. I suspect Tony Cook must have made a few bob from this clip over the years.
@softlystroll Apparently yes. If you look at moments like when they try "up there" and then the camera is there before they exit going "nope, nope", its all pre-prepared. There are also too many cutaways. Its a masterful stunt though and his laughter at the end looks so genuine.
@Marillionboy Yes i can see what you mean. If that was the case, I still get the feeling that the last scene was a spontaneous and unplanned diversion. The tree-planter himself can be heard cracking up with laughter at the end despite being apparently unaware of the absurdity of the situation up to then.
@softlystroll Yes I'm inclined to agree despite the fact that the shot of him laughing is a cutaway. Its SO well done. I'v e always meant to visit Blanchland as it looks a lovely place here!
Many thanks for posting this classic - a slow burning farce where intrepid reporter Tony Cook is gradually worn down by the utter disorganisation of his host. A chaotic final scene ensues - the spade snaps and he crumbles into hysterics - grasping a sprig of fir in desparation. And what chance the postmaster recalling the direction he would have gone to plant those saplings a decade earlier? I just hope that the spirit of this clip and the aims of WACI-2000 still live on in those maturing trees.
Can anyone remember the one with the old australian guy interviewed just after he came out of the dentist just after having laughing gas,? HILARIOUS!!!!!
... if anyone has got it please upload it and send me a messsage to let me know MANY THANKS!!

Even though this was a mock up and not a genuine outtake it is brilliantly done and the laughter at the end is fantastic.

I've been wanting to see this clip for years, I remember seeing it when it was first shown in the 80's.
I just love the way the TV presenter is pi**ing himself towards the end.
Thanks for putting this on YouTube.
