Seriously though - you did it all wrong! Keep the body and the Porsche Cup Alloys already fitted, and drop the 3.0 Porsche flat-6 with a G51 gearbox, and swap out the suspension at the same time.

That would be a much, much cooler car.

Look, I love rotors, and yours sounds damn good - so why not put it back into a proper Series-1 RX7? I enjoyed all my RX7s (three) but I love my Porsche more. You want to Porschify a bug, not rice it!

@skaterpunkdude3 Not reliable at all. You will never see a rotary run more than 30k miles. They blow seals all the time. They are just crap all round. Air cooled VW engines on the other hand run forever and can cross deserts. Before anyone complains about my comment...just think about this for a moment. Why is a small rotary heavier on fuel than a 5.7l v8?

@skaterpunkdude3 Then get a bus (combie) engine. The 2L will do just fine. That will fit the engine compartment well. It will give you heaps of power and will go like stink. If that is still not enough power then you can fit a blower to the 2L with a bigger carb. It will still be way reliable. Rotary powered cars are usually trailer babies.

@skaterpunkdude3 Whenever I am looking for a specific classic engine, I first contact all the owners clubs for said vehicle in my local area. If that yields no results, I go visit the scrap yards and enquire. At some scrappy's they will even call other scrappy dealers to help u track down what you are looking for. You might have to be patient but if you search around you will find what you need.

@bakkerrich1979 wrong. most rotaries last around 80-90K without much more than basic maintenance. now if you constantly run the living hell out of it, it will last long. Apex seals are mostly worn out from easy daily driving. drive it like its suppost to be (like a two stroke bike) and you wont have many problems.

13Bs don't do to well in FWD setups, Mazda onlyl made 1 FWD rotary car(a Japan-only variant of the 323) and it used a 13A which is VERY VERY hard to find parts for. Also an Excel is a really bad chassis for performance. You'll want to start off with a better platform to go rotary in. Rotary Miatas are loads of fun, and 1st gen Rx-7s start you off with everything major that you want, you just do some bolt ons and suspension, only problem with 1st gen 7s is live axle rear suspension.

This is an absolutely stellar car. I've not seen a rotor bug in person but have wanted to build one for over 20 years. To get 135hp out of a type 1 engine you need to spend about $4500. To get 135hp out of a rotary you only need to start it. Naturally aspirated you can get 170hp out of a reliable and streetable 12A tear port all the way up to 275hp out of a wildly bridgeported highly tuned 13B. I bought a '69 type 1 yesterday and hope it turns out even half as nice as yours.

Nice conversion mate! Where did you place the radiator(s)? Rotors run pretty hot so the cooling can be a major issue. The sweet VW lines combined with a 13B is the sleeper from hell! Keep up the good work!
