Was it a big deal when this won? This film is very different from ALL the other winners. Closest comparisons are The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, and American Beauty.
Even if you hate the Academy they definitely changed their image that night.
Oh please, @Oscars, can you post Ted Tally winning for the Oscar best adapted screenplay having penned The Silence of the Lambs? Pleeeeaasssseeee!!! :)
We're lacking great stars. OMG in 5 minutes, we can see 3 legends. Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. Where are those times and legends anymore? :(
I love The Silence of the Lambs... Seriously, I do, but Beauty and the Beast is just part of my heart, and in the year of my birth I wish it had won the Oscar.
This video breaks my heart for so many reasons, but the most powerful one is that last second when the camera focuses on Audrey Hepburn. I didn't know she was there, seeing Alan Menken winning an Oscar. Both of them, Audrey and Alan, are people I love with all my heart. To know they're together in the same place is just... ecstatic.
@TuTuNendo08 Paul wasn't burried he was creamated and his ashes scattered at the hole in the wall gang camp in ashford Ct. plus it's not like him looking down Liz's dress was out of character he did it to Joanne all the time
The best decision the Academy made in 20 years letting The Silence of the Lambs win best picture and Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins win best actress and actor. Awesome!
I can see what younger women would see in the ageing Paul Newman here. I hope I look half that good when I'm that old. I'll still be dating ladies in their thirties!
The villain that relies so much on special effects to be awesome? The villain that doesn't have a character? The villain that doesn't act/show emotion at all? Yeah, I know "trying not to act/show emotion" is still pretty hard.
And there's nothing special with the acting either. If you watch Arnold's other movies, he's not really good at it. The other actors? Meh. Special effects is more about budget anyway.
But I have to agree on the direction, though. Cameron did a great job.
@SKSelphie It is a very, very good movie. I've watched it several times and still get the chills whenever Barney says to Clarice; "He's (Hannibal) past the others in the last cell, I put a chair out for you"
As to whether it is THE best movie ever made is down to personal taste
the problem with "JFK" was the acting (and no I'm not talking about Tommy Lee Jones; he was magnificent and deserved the oscar nod); some of the dialogue was corny and cliche. But yeah that film was brilliantly edited; oliver stone shouldn't have won his second Best Director award for "Born of the 4th of July" but he should have won for "JFK".
SOTL doesn't hold up at all. I watched it again about 4 months ago and I was laughing through many parts of it. When I wasn't laughing I was bored. Foster can't act her way out of a wet paper bag. She's another one those "critic faves", or was, that gets rewarded for shit. However, all that being said, SOTL is better than anything released this year.
@loxj Actually it holds up quite well; it was your sense of taste that doesn't hold up. Jodie foster is one of the greatest actresses of the modern era. There are very few actresses that could display terror, insecurity, and a burgeoning sense of inner strength the way she did in that film. You were laughing through many parts; that obviously implies that you are a sociopath because the disturbing elements of the film are still powerful. It also received, and still does, universal acclaim.
@ANOMALY1ate No it doesn't!! As for Foster she does the same performance every time: {a}Squints eyes. {b} pursed lips. {c} Looks off into distance. The only thing she is capable of emoting constipation. Your obvious shrill fangirlism and histrionics towards anyone who doesn't share your opinion obviously implies stalkerish tenancies and it's no wonder you relate to this turd of movie so well. Sad really.
@ANOMALY1ate If you think Foster is one of the "greatest actresses of modern era" it's YOUR taste that is in doubt! She is one of the most uptight, self-consciousness actresses ever. Silence was and is a melodramatic tv movie of the week. Hopkins, fava beans and a nice chianti, shtick was laughable then and it's even more laughable today.
God Elizabeth Taylor is SO BEAUTIFUL, she has a face for the ages, centuries from now she'll me talked about as we talk of Helen of Troy and Cleopatra(in fact she played them both), her beauty is legendary, and even as an old woman, she tilts her head in a certain way, and the light falls in a certain angle, and there it is, the same flawless face from National Velvet and her great roles.
The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best horror movies ever made and idk why everyones saying o Beauty and the Beast was robbed who ever says that dosent really know what a good movie is now im not saying its a bad movie i think it is one of the best Disney movies ever but come on people how can you go wrong with The Silence of the Lambs i think its one of the best of the best Best Pictures.
@Messylin IS the simple fact of being nominated an honour, did you know that? And iam 100% sure you hate musicas.i know i can't change your personal taste, but i find quite stupid to insulta or defend a movie without arguments. The academy know what a good film is,and both silence of the lambs and beauty and the beast are very good films.
anthony hopkins and jodie foster deserved their oscars. but i have to say, beauty and the beast deserved best picture. it really is an awesome movie, even if its animated.
@JackKlompus13 WHAT?!?! These 2 people r Hollywood royalty. If u don't know who they r, both of their names r in the description box. Paul Newman & Elizabeth Taylor.

As much as i loved "The silence of the lambs",i actually felt T2 deserves atleast a big nomination
Nowadays James Cameron makes movies like avatar which is also a great movie...but alas not as great as T2
T2>>>>>>>>THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
REASON:special effects
2.acting
3.Direction
4.It HAD A MUCH MUCH BETTER VILLAIN!!!!!!
