  • holy shit thats fast

  • too fast and out of tune.

  • His right hand is really good.

Anyone who likes Primrose should hear his playing Concerto by Bartok.

  • primrose is fucking amazing

  • All you guys do is type in "Violin" and go to "the best" violinist you think you see judging by ONE video and making your own retarded opinion. Yes Heifetz was a GREAT violinist, and Primrose was a LEGEND on the viola, but your forgetting the thousands of other musicians who had something else in them that another Primrose or Hefietz had, an original color and original sound that makes them good too.

  • dude shut up please

  • lol im moving to a 17" soon

  • Since means nothing if you don't have the skill.

  • please shut up. I'm 6-1 with disproportionately large hands, so a 16 seems small for me.

  • Absolutely true

  • The reason is that Primrose started to loose his hearing as he aged. Heifetz noticed this before Primrose himself did. They made some studio recordings, and Primrose had slight intonation issues throughout the sessions, so slight that Heifetz only noticed when he listened to the recordings in the editing room.

But, years earlier, Heifetz discovered Primrose in an orchestra he was performing with because his fine playing stood out.

  • r u talking to me?

    im actually defending primrose.

  • You have NO IDEA what you are talking about! Wow...someone who is as ignorant as you.

Primrose was one of a handful of musicians Heifetz had respect for...and I'm sure that Heifetz knows more about this matter than YOU.

  • violin king ur so ignorant. i want u to post a video of yourself at least playing a bach minuet or a bach suite. or play this same song with the same intonation as him. primrose was the best. if heifetz plyed the viola he would have nevr been as good as primrose.

  • Haha, yeah, i guess 3 hours a day isn't enough. You're so ignorant it's not even funny. Violin is much easier than viola, if I played violin instead of viola, God knows how much more advanced I'd be right now. And just so you know, I started on viola, so you can't call me a "failed violinist".

  • Typical closeminded fool, trying to judge someone by the instrument they play. There's no point in arguing with you, bc obviously you're a closeminded ignorant musician. I doubt you even watched my videos of Primrose. Perhaps one day you'll mature and come to realize how ignorant this argument has made you look, if not, well, have fun teaching at middle schools when you're older.

  • Listen, I am a violist and I know plenty about all kinds of violists. Zukerman is in no way a better violist than Primrose, not in terms of technique, not in terms of musicianship. He is good for a violinist who just switches over, but he's no Primrose. Technically speaking, Primrose was on the same level on viola as Heifetz was on violin. There's a reason Heifetz an Piatigorsky stopped playing chamber music with Arthur Rubinstein also, but was it because he was a bad pianist? Hell no.

  • You are absolutely incorrect. Primrose was the greatest violist in terms of not only technique, but musicianship as well. You must be an amatuer musician to make a judgment based off of this video that was recorded when he was old as hell and partially deaf. Check out my videos and you'll see why no other violist has ever become as famous as Primrose.

  • yeah if someone made a violin that big they either had bad eyesight or was crazy

  • hes old in this vid. hes trying to show that hes still got chops. saying, look im old but i can still play fast. he was known as a bad ass his whole life. he probably had problems accepting the fact that you cant be a bad ass your whole life. kinda sad. i think this clip probably did more harm than good to his legacy, just look these comments. i mean if you dont know who primrose is and just saw this clip, youd probably not think much of him.

  • Very true comment...

  • so? am i not allowed to have an opinion?

  • this is terriblle

no sense for expression ,out of tune.....too fast, i hate it

  • I prefer this version to any cello version actually! Some of Bach's cello suites seem better suited for the viola...

  • well...primrose was old and by now had already secured his reputation ass a badass, so he could pretty much do what he wanted and what made him happy...playing bach fast made him happy...that was just his style...maybe he was so loved because he played in a way that made him happy...not just in a way that pleased others

  • While it is undoubtedly true that his playing level declined with his age, Many of his lesser recordings are imperfect because he was goofing off and messing around. If you watch this with that in mind and buy it at face value it is actually quite entertaining.

  • What is this piece called?

  • This is the courrante from bach's first cello suite.

  • I know that he really helped out us violists in a lot of ways and was really a trailblazer in many senses, but his Bach SUCKS. It sounds like he's just playing this as fast as he can, which is not the point. I'd love to see someone try to dance to this...they'd probably go into cardiac arrest!

  • Although I don't completely agree with Primroses musical interpretations, He really was one of the most technically advanced players of all time.

  • ...and? It's Amazing.

  • Aside from being way too fast, it isn't terribly musical. A portion of Primrose's ill-advised Bach recording sessions late in his career that do nothing for his legacy as one of the great string players of all time. His hearing was seriously impaired and his friend and former pupil David Dalton had to circle notes during playbacks to let Primrose know that they needed to be adjusted and which way.

  • WHat do you expect? he's a violinist! And I've allways interpreted this particular music as being in the sort of lower half of the bow, because it's chamber music.

  • That's part of the joke. That's why he did it at the tip. and it's a viola.
