Not dead at all. More convinced than ever. Have a drummer listening so he can chime in. He didn't even know Carmine, but he's learning. To me this is about the same as puzzling over whether you're hearing Clapton or Jimi Hendrix. (You can just tell the difference.)
After listening a few times, I'm sure the drummer is Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge; BBA; etc.). he's my favorite. No wonder I thought he was good upon the first couple listens.
@PsychedelicTripster I responded to your post, tripster, but don't see it anywhere. :-( Those dates don't mean Jamie was the drummer at every show/tour, etc. The Brits loved Carmine. (Beck, Rod Stewart, Clapton, all worked with him.) I know those riffs, I know those drums, it's Carmine. Listen to "Shotgun" by the Vanilla Fudge and "Lady" by Beck, Bogert and Appice. Those chops are all through there. His use of metal, rolling snare drum shots, etc. THIS song is him.
@PsychedelicTripster I went around again, PT. The studio version and this performance. I listened closely. 10 times more (open/close) high-hat as Jamie. Fills to the 3rd power! Way more active/aggressive. It's Mr. Appice. (Back to you.)
@PsychedelicTripster Ouch! I admit that IS evidence in support of your position. And I've snooped a little looking for something contrary. The best I have, so far, is listening to Jamie on the studio version. I'm still looking :-). (I might have to make my final appeal to St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.) I've also brought in a ringer. A friend who has also followed Carmine since 1967. Signed, Down But Not Out!
@PsychedelicTripster Happy New Year, Tripster. (I'm formulating a devastating response. I ask again, can you point me to any other song(s) where Oldaker is that busy, playing those licks..., etc.?) (I was "down but not out." Now, I'm secretly (?) mounting a counter offensive.)
@PsychedelicTripster Ruh roh, tripster! Have you checked the live "Layla" vid (listed on the right) from (apparently) the same Santa Monica event? A drum solo! Is THAT Jamie Oldaker?
1) A truly great song; 2) a truly compelling "live" performance (so good I'm pondering how much post production was involved [especially the little phrases from the 'middle' guitars]); 3) the drummer!; 4) did I mention what a great song I thought this was?; 5) did I mention what a great live performance I thought this was?
Probably the greatest rock song of all time!! Clapton showed them all how it should be done!! LOL Marcy Levy on vocals was flawless and the driving riff is the best ever!!!
Always nice when a back up singer is given a chance to step up, and she knocks it out of the park. Great job by everyone on this one. A great under-appreciated rock tune!
Yes this Clapton as I remember him

This song still sends chills, then again there are several Clapton songs that do, but this one in particular.

@princeofgary I agree prince. Great performance all around. I think the extra special aggressive and skillful drums are a difference maker.

@woodhous The drummer is Jamie Oldaker. He was Clapton's drummer from 1974 - 1978/79.

Bit of an Allman Brothers feel off it, don't you think? Rockin' version alright - thanks for the upload!
