BDSM may be learned or innate or some combination of both. BDSM may have different causes in different individuals. Non-reproductive sexual proclivities is something the young science of psychology is only starting to figure out.

People choose pain (both physical & mental) in a number of non-sexual ways. What is it about the sexual element then? There are many painless sexual activities that are also deviant, abnormal, and deemed unhealthy and/or immoral (yours would probably fit this bill in some cultures).
