Seem like the collision was when you had the sun behind you and the bird did not see you, pretty awesome to share this with us thank you, how is the hand of the girl that was helping?
For general informational purposes, this is a Swainson's Hawk, probably a second year bird. These birds are generally fairly docile. The open mouth is a sign of stress. he was probably pretty shaken up. His Stance is a defensive posture, sitting on the tail with his feet free to defend. It looks like he was surrounded so he waited until he had a free path to safety.
@jmhiii13 Why do you say it is a Swainson's hawk as opposed to a Red Tail? It had more Red Tail traits than Swainson's, particularly the distinctive Red Tail, and not a barred tail. Also, the wings were broader, and rounder, not at all pointed or slender. It had every characteristic of Red Tail, not a Swainson's.
Looks shocked but ok. Where did this happen ? I was for couple of months in British Coulumbia this year and a guy told a similar story but he was literraly attacked while landing. I attach a picture of the repaired wing aftermath.
I was in the LZ after having already landed my HG. The hawk stood there frozen for 5 minutes after the people moved away and then flew away and perched on a tree at the corner of the LZ. It appeared to fly normally with no injury to it's wings. After a few more minutes it flew away from it's perch.
Can you clarify if the Hawk was flying toward the PG in a territorial attack OR were both bird and wing actually flying in the same direction? Hard for me to believe the PG over took the Hawk. As having flown Tiger Mt. for many years and having seen the Hawks dog fight on many occasions I just wonder if this feathered friend decided to take the PG wing straight on?! This has to be a first that I'm aware of. At least the bird didn't tangle your lines and induce major issues!

Stressed? I imagine so! One day you're top of the food chain, flying along, the next you're eaten by a sky monster...

Did you write a report to FAA? Check any egg left in your wing!

Now this hawk will have a good history to tell his friends when he came back home.
Nice end.

Amazing footage and answered a "what if" question about birds in the wing. Glider may have a few love marks but pilot & bird walked/flew away ok. :)
