On his day during the 'Invincibles' era Pires was one of, if not the best left-sided midfielder in Europe. I have him in my top 5 of greatest ever Arsenal players. Legend!
@snaiker911 Wiltord???...I think you mean Vieira. Wiltord didn't even contribute much to that unbeaten season considering he was injured through out most of it. Henry,Pires and Vieira.
At the moment my beloved Arsenal have not one midfielder that can score goals on a regular bases! that's why we badly needed the likes of Fabregas and Nasri to stay. Pires was the King of midfielders when it came to scoring goals. What makes me laugh is our defender Thomas Vermaelen is more effective in front of goal than anyone else but Van Persie when he gets his chance's!
Arsenal was so perfect makes me feel like crying but I am a gunner so I'll always keep the faith in wenger.....after all our motto in English is "victory through harmony"
This is why calling for Wenger's head is a ridiculous suggestion. He made this team, one of the best ever witnessed in football history. How this squad never won the CL is a tragedy (in footballing terms...) Lets not forget Arsenal's dominance came at a time when they had French players from their "golden generation", much like Barca & their Spaniards today. Emulating this again will take more time & even after 6 years, I will support the Gunners through it all. Wenger deserves success again.
@anelka09 If Flamini and Hleb hadn't sought new pastures (AC Milan & Barcelona) we would have ended the wait. Wenger had built up a team that was strong enough to win the league, but they wanted more money than they were getting paid. But you are right about that 'Invincibles', which consisted of four world cup winners:Henry, Viera, Pires & Gilverto. Three of them were from France's golden generation. Its not easy to build a team like that, especially as they developed a lot under Wenger.
OMG I miss this Arsenal team. Somehow I'm not looking forward for every Arsenal's match this season. Looking at the substitutes bench I only see youngsters. Enough of your players with potential Wenger, we need WINNERS !
How far we have fallen, from the invincibles to also rans and a selling club. Why is there no activity in this transfer window when all the other teams have invested heavily. There should have been signings earlier this summer when everyone could see Fabregas going and Nasri going, then we sell Clichy and now with 10 days to go we have perhaps 60-70 million to invest but what team will let players go now and for what prices. In my opinion 5-6 players are needed and not super quality players.
Supporting Arsenal back then was a joy. To be honest it's hard work now, not because of a lack of achievement, not at all, just that our players don't have the same personality. Sagna, Koschelny, Arshavin etc are all just non entities in that respect ...
There will always be players like Henry, maybe not as good, but similar nonetheless. Even Bergkamp, despite being God, wasn't one of a kind ( I for one feel Van P is a left footed Bergkamp playing in a different position)
Robert Pires, the duck footed Frenchman who, by appearance, didn't look like a footballer at all. But when he graced that pitch, that awkward walk turned into pace, finesse, power, vision, intelligence, excitement and most importantly, jaw dropping quality. Bobby forever
Thiery Henry - striker Kanu - Striker Pires Palour Lungberg Berkamp Gilberto Edu Viera Wiltord Lehman Campbell Jose antoine reyes Ashley cole If i left out few more these players where the golden squad! Persie, Fab, n the others where in the bench watching their seniors kill the premier league! Arsenal golden ages never forgotten!
wow henry, viera, pires, bergkamp and ljumberg on the same pitch. that was a team and a half such a shame they never won the CL but hey they went unbeaten. Im glad i got to witness that team in action.
@CallamEnIr95 cheered obviously. why would we boo a hero like him? nothing he could do now (bar joining sp*rs) would sour my memories of him, pires is king.
What are you talking about? lol. Nothing I said requires any 'expertise', I don't even know why you're pathetically trying to insult me with rubbish comebacks or why you even replied to my original comment in the first place.
@Danraemon and now see what happened 2.3 arsenal get relegated im ok wid that but losing to scm at home after being up 2,0 is sad indeed, 17 years, henry said in one of his interview that he is proud to say that i didnt lose to spurs ;( sad sad sad days
In fairness a team with campbell, vieira, freddie, pires, bergkamp, henry...no wonder the gunners were unstoppable...i always rue the fact we didnt win the champions league in the invinciples year, wud have been the iceing on the cake..thanks for the memories Bobby, always a gunner legend
