C'mon! No sax? Alto Reed? I've heard Jr. Walker on several songs (I think he's that burning sax part on Foreigner's "Urgent") Clarence Clemons (including Miss Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love"), and a ton of Steely Dan. I admit to not being able to think off the top of my head of a song that's all backed by sax, but I'll bet there is one.
as the young folks would say, this is sick nasty, just a bad song, sax makes you feel like you're going through a washing machine, if this came out today it would be #1 on the charts in about a day and a half and it would stay there for a year. too bad no more music like this anymore, haven't heard a sax in a new pop release in decades.
@BHBrother87 I agree with everything you said except todays kids would not have a clue what is good music and nobody i am afraid but us oldies would listen. These kids of today HAVE NO CLUE WHAT GREAT MUSIC IS. There is no way in hell a kid today that listens to the gaga and biebers and hip hop has a frickin clue what great bluesy R&B music is. Todays R&B is not R&B that is for sure. just my opinion. But how many cars do you hear driving by with this kind of music playing loud. NONE! ZERO! NADA!
@LesSmith45 come to think of it the last commercial success for a sax backed song was john fogerty playing the sax on rock n' roll girls in 85'. I'm sure i've missed a few songs between then and now but that's what comes to mind.
Can't believe how great this guy still sounds. This is really amazing.I remember when this song first came out.Have the 45rpm. still. How many singers still sound this good.I still can't believe it.One of my all time favorites.
Wow. The "Pride of Jacksonville, Florida" still sounded good in 1989, and according to other posts - still sounds good. I saw GUSB at a local concert in North Miami, Florida in 1963 (the North Miami Armory). He had a great show - unfortunately marred by some fistfights amongst some of the testosterone-laden 16 year olds present. Ah youth!
Sax player is Screamin Steve Barlotta. He was Gary's Musical Director from 1987-1998.He is now in the popular RnB band the Sensational Soul Cruisers.
Bonds in fine voice getting synched up with his musicians, incredible sax break, and Bonds in the cool shirt swinging from the vines in his voice, and what a cultured voice
Saw Gary last night with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings and they were terrific - Bonds was in great voice, Albert Lee was great on guitar; Georgie Fame on top form - and the Rhythm Kings sporting two saxes were also terrific.
My favorite musician, KEVAN TYNES played drums for GARY U.S.BONDS along with Carlton Morales on guitar (on JULIAN LENNON'S VALLOTTE album.} KEVAN TYNES,CARLTON MORALES AND GARY U.S. BONDS,rode from gig to gig in a U-haul van.
I loved this song...bet it was 1961.
