Sweden got Nordic cold record -55, so sweden is definately coldest Nordic country since they dont benefit from the warm gulfstream, that you find in western parts of the scandinavian peninsula. Wintertime you can actually drive on top of the ice by car on the frozen baltic sea from sweden to finland, that also is icecold, almost Siberian.

I don't know if the northen location of a country dictates how cold a winter will be. Just as an example, there is a small town in Wisconsin called Delafield that has winter temperatures that usually average out or surpass a winter in Stockholm, or Moscow.

My son and I are visiting Stockholm in late December. Any advice as to places to see and I am thinking about using public transport (buses/ trains). Is public transport reliable?

@Adam27566 It is very reliable, but it also depends on the weather and ammount of snow.

You could also take the subway, its very constant so you dont have to wait a long time to go somewhere in the inner city. (Its also very beautiful if you ignore all the grafitti.)

You should take a ferry or walk to Djurgården, its a really good spot for photographing and has a nice view over the ocean and Stockholm.

If your son likes animals then you could visit Skansen or Aquaria. (They are very close).

@Adam27566 You could also visit the suburbs or neighbour islands like Värmdö, Vaxholm, Djurö, etc.

If you guys like fishing you could bring some fishing gear and fish in the middle of the city, theres a stream called Stockholms Ström where you can catch Perch, Pike, Salmon and a lot more.

Stockholm is a couple degrees warmer than its surrounding (the city generates heat) And it is built by the sea so we get very mild vinters here. When you go a bit north and inland its another story.

@Johannson6990 Dutch is pretty close to German, I mean, if you speak German you can understand some Dutch, because Dutch was born as a German dialect (I read it somewhere few months ago). They say Swedish is similar to German, but honestly when I read Swedish I can't understand anything, the only word I know in Swedish is "Efterbliven" which means "retarded"...
