To people who want to get a chinese tattoo. Please understand Chinese is a DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. That means not everything can be translated literally. Single characters don't have as much meaning as you may think they do. Chinese people will look at it just like you would view a Chinese person with the English letters "pretty". If you don't want to look like a white wannabe, I suggest using Chinese proverbs, 4 character passages that DO have a lot of meaning and beauty.

@LINX29X92 No it is not weird. Many non Asians get Chinese tattoos because it looks like a nice tribal tattoo to those who cannot read it, but it does have a meaning behind it. They actually like the fact that the meaning is not so obvious. If you can't read Chinese, you actually have to ask that person what his/her tattoo means.

Chinese is traditionally written vertically (top to bottom) so there is no doubt as to which character comes first. But with later western influence, it is also written horizontally, but some do it right to left some do it left to right (more common). If it is a long paragraph, it is easy to tell which direction it should be read from (left to right or right to left). But for a short phrase or name, there might be some mix up. It is thus best to use the vertical alignment- top to bottom.
