JOANSUTHERLAND IS THE RADIENT GLORY OF THE HUMAN VOICE AND OPERA I really appreciate you COLORATURA FAN I like these private videos of Joans met 1982 Lucia better....what I mean is...its like she herself said: "Some nights are better than others" The telecast of this "run" of Lucias I think her voice wasne as good as here
Hako, yes,I agree...But people are wrong to think that the high notes(Eb,especially) were problematic later. She sang them consistently into the last years, and differnet, more interesting than the earlier "white" lasers...and also riveting because she can still do them late in life(wondering each time live,IF...) and mo0re ontersting,colorwise.....All hail to the one who never lets us down, always kept the level beyond others, kept the trust.
I had the "chance" to get "a" Ticket for that performance and I did the travel to Utrecht from Paris (because she never came back to Paris during many years) ! She made "a tour" in Holland with Lucia...Numrous of Dame Joan's supporters did the same travel ..It was an incredible Performance !! I think what of the best she ever did !! Thanks Joan ! We would never forgive YOU and Richard !
Curtseying . . . bowing . . . ALL HAIL QUEEN JOAN! I just heard an interview with Dessay (who just had her own triumph in Lucia) talking about Dame Joan, and although she admired her vocally, she said she was not an actress. I think she was stunning here. Vocally no one can compete with this . .
Dessay should shout her mouth! she is forty now and she screams Lucia without pity and for her "acting" means "entering on a stage with a lot of blood upon her and screaming in the middle of the piece she is singing". Sutherland was 57 here and she sings everything and she's wonderful! Opera is about that!
@motardbear15 Haha, what you said is sooooo very true!!! Except these days I'd categorise Dessay as tap water - I suppose that makes me a musical snob lol
@Shabran87 I couldn't agree more unfortunately Ms Dessay become reliant on "epileptic" style fits for acting. All that damn shaking about! THIS is what Lucia is all about. All hail Joan is right!!!

The Eb here is the best I heard from her post 1979. It has so much of the power, brilliance and ring of her 70's Lucias. A shame these performances weren't preserved and sold on DVD. Some insist that her "good" Eb's were gone by the late
In this performance, her E-flat sounds really good! But I think that her 'real' prime E-flat was in 1961~1972. In early 1960s, her high notes indeed 'perfect'!!
Her very early Eb's seemed a bit "white" to me....maybe sung a little too "open". That can be exciting to hear, but hard on the voice. The best Eb's came later, and had the characteristic "bell-like" quality.....dark/light and better balanced. Those years were early 60's to early 70's...yes.
The performance in Utrecht, Holland was on 8 and 11 May 1982. She later did the Lucia at the Met in New York in Nov/ Dec 1982 which was telecast and preserved in the DVD. The voice in this performance was stronger and more dramatic than the performance in the Met. Of course, the coloratura was just amazing!
Isn't it? She was trained to do that. In a documentary, Joan mentioned that one thing she had to learn and practice a lot when she was studying in the London Opera Centre was to "fall gracefully" on the stage! Who said that La Stupenda's acting not convincing, right?

@Shabran87 You are alsolutely "right" ! To compare Dessay to Dame Joan is like comparing the best Champagne of the cellar and a Coca-cola !
Miss Dessay hould have taken some lessons of what "bel canto " is with Dame Joan and also Richard Bonynge ! She is far, so far...

I have no idea where Utrecht is, but I know she gave several performances of Lucia in the Netherlands in '82. Including Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Hako2004 3 years ago
It is located in the North-Eastern end of the Randstad, in the Netherlands.

YES!!!
And she was a true actress.
Vocality ALWAYS came before, but thats why she lasted THESE many years!
I love it!!!!!
Like a feather she floats...ha ha ha.
Hail La Stupenda!!!!!

Practice makes PERFECT!
La Stupenda in GREAT form, even at this age.
Amazing that she looked and sung even this fresh....wonderfull!!!!
Hail la Stupenda!!!

Thanks CFan, even at fifty-six Sutherland's Lucia was still difficult to equal. To hit and hold an Eb with that kind of strength is a miracle.
