The mineshafts that the pre releases generated were very expansive. I spent a long time trying to "conquer" one under my base to no avail. I would suggest holding onto your fortress goal until you find a stronghold on your map (I think 3 generate per map now). They are much more conquer-able, and fit the goal better.
