He's an intelligent Ape, but I get the feeling that it's not intelligence so much as memory/ repetition that he's using.
That, and I'm pretty sure it's hard for any normal Chimpanzee to chance across a lighter and learn how to use it like it was intended. I'd be pretty impressed if any chimp anywhere could make a fire without some kind of training or human tools.
Yes...perfect....this is what the World needs.....fire starting monkeys. Turn him loose with a 5 gallon can of gasoline and a book of matches, and please, for the love of Christ, get that video on Youtube...!
lol! So the chimp is given a MANUFACTURED LIGHTER (one that requires the user just to push the button), is allowed to play around with it, discovers that the button moves and causes something to happen, watches the human put the sticks on the fire, is directed by the human to do certain things, and suddenly... "EVOLUTION IS PROVEN!" Take the human out of the equation and see what a chimp does with the lighter.
@JMcH I think one of the most important things here is that he is not afraid of the fire, like most other animals, and is fascinated with it. It at least presents a plausible scenario for our ancestors acquiring fire (we need to first not be deathly afraid of it) and being fascinated when it gets started in nature (potentially from lightning strikes). Enough so that they would be motivated to transfer and tend to the flames.
@ByTheBeardOfZeus001 - He's not afraid of the fire because he doesn't know what it can do to him. Good gosh! There's a human there who is helping him! Remove the human and you will eventually see him stick is bloody paw in the fire and learn to fear it.
@Rampant7990 - Feeling heat doesn't make someone afraid of fire and actually, yes, I seriously doubt he's been burned as he has a human there directing every single one of his actions.
@JMcH What, and I'm seriously asking here, does this have to do with evolution?
No one in the video or the comments mentioned evolution. YOU brought it up.
What we're looking at is fascinating and previously unseen behavior in Pan paniscus. It has bugger all to do with descent with modification via changes in allelic frequency in a population.
@gaijinlaw - According to evolutionary theory, what drives genes being passed down, my friend? Survival. If you survive, you can pass on your genes. What can ensure survival? Better food, better water, better skills, better knowledge and understanding, better tools, etc. Learning to use fire increases survival and thus helps drive the passing of genes. According to evolutionary theory.
She deserves to be punished for this crime, let bound her to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day!!!!!!!!
Have to object to the description, chimps aren't as smart as humans, maybe just this woman who fails at grammar and basic sentance structure. A child of 7 could do better.
Damn, I don't know what's worse, the video or the comments.
Obviously the monkey was trained for a long time by a "reward system" like you do with a stupid dog. The monkey even looks very old, very familiarized with humans and with no sign of wild instinct. Human understood the "need of heat" and how fire works, the very first times he just used to find it and keep it as a torch, to start a fire was a matter of learning. This is something the stupid animal will never do.
@benetx Ok, you need to understand this is a beggining, the human race don't understand everything from the very start, they need to learn by himself, what's happening here is what humans had to do, but with some help from another specie, he's been trained, and the descendents will be trained too, and as the evolution says, someday they will learn the how and the why of the fire. the evolution takes time, don't be a closed mind and don't call stupid to the animal... Greetings from México
@benetx I don't know which is more laughable-your claim to special knowledge of the way in which this "stupid" bonobo learned to make fires, or your sad ignorance of the fact that bonobos aren't "monkeys".
Yes, he learned this all on his own with absolutely NO encouragement from ANYBODY. Well alright, maybe a little, but he did pick up calculus completely on his own.
@Leelyn05 Chimpanzee is a distinction that can include all members of the genus Pan, which includes bonobos (pan paniscus) and common chimpanzees (pan troglodytes).
Secretly planning his escape. Gotta learn as much as possible
