yes u have to tell yourself to be more alert or be more aware; when u give this command to yourself your mental focus shifts away from that you were paying attention eg u had pain somewhere in your body and you were mentally preoccupied with that pain. by telling yourself to be more alert minds shifts away from the body and its pain; now the pain may still be there but you are not focused on it. after doing this a few times u will literally feel the pressure of the mind on the body being lifted
you should always keep your busy in some or the other job or skill in which you are interested
