  • Maybe my favorite version. Wyn Morris was an underrated conductor (whose personality didn't exactly help his career). Geraint Evans is great, stepping out of his usual repretoire. And Janet Baker is on this CD, and is simply the greatest.

  • The pathos of the drummer's corpse rising mechanically to recite his 'duty': Ich muß mein Trommel rühren, ich muß mein Trommel wohl rühren,' is unspeakable. Reflected in the mirrour of history, the urgency and military 'imperative' that drove such early-morning alley skirmishes will be obscure, incomprehensible, or entirely lost. As will the imagined victory of the monstrous army the drummer's tatoo resurrects to defeat their slayers.

  • Five stars for Mahler, teh Six Star in this tube!

  • This sounds like it's in a lower key than I'm used to hearing it sung in. Great, though- Evans was amazing

  • Many many thanks!
