@bagaauwk there's a video on youtube called Arab Drift, where this song is played...that's the first thing that came to my mind while I watched the opening of this video. Search for Arab Drift on YT.
@MegaDETROIT18 MCS is being renovated, and is guarded. i could point you the way in, but being on probation, youre on your own after that. youre a little late on the peak of exploring in detroit., everythings being knocked down or renovated.
I was on the roof of this place a few years ago. One of my favorite things to do ever. It was crazy as hell walking through there. You're always thinking you're going to fall right through a hole in the damn floor to your death or something. On the roof there was this chimney with a ladder up it. The only way to get to the chimney was to walk across a very scary chasm. There was graffiti all the way up the thing. It was crazy. I'd go back anytime.
It would be great if the owners could refurbish the building into apartments or an office building. However because no one wants to locate their business in Detroit, neither option is feasible. The best it could be is low-income housing, and for that you might as well not fix it up, because the people who live in low-income housing don't care about taking care of the property. After all, it doesn't belong to them, so why not trash it.
@Croozer I am the ethug? I made a comment on here and you start shit and Im the virtual pussy? LOL, you are just a passive aggressive asshole that spends your life pushing your own insecurities on other people over the internet. LOL You know it, if you didnt have the anonymity of the internet you wouldnt be talking shit. Just do you spree killing and get it over with.
Detroit is by far the scariest city in the US, I grew up about an hour from there and have since been to Harlem, DC,Atlanta, San Antonio, L.A., Chicago, Vegas West and south side of Phoenix, St Louis just to name a few and even the worst of those can not compare to downtown Detroit, Im not bragging for it cause it is a shithole and a very dangerous place,
I see this guy was with friends but even then they could have been ambushed inside this building and killed ,it is truly another world
The guy who owns the Station wants to restore it, but he keeps having to fight the City Government, who wants to tear it down. Fortunately it is a historically protected site, so they can't. It's an estimated 80- 300 million dollar effort to restore it, and until he can find an actual use for it (investors and viable business), it remains this way.
@hippiebutnot Quit making the owner out to be some kinda saint, he left this building to die just like the old Packard plant, both should be demolished at the owners expense.
Both have become eyesores and need to be done away with.
@Croozer I'm a conservationist so anyone interested in restoring a building instead of just ripping it, and all it's history, down is going to win points with me. I never said he was a saint, I just am happy he's expressed interest in restoring a potentially beautiful building.
This is insane... In Australia, This building would be so highly valued for its architectural significance.. Unbelievable that it could be left like this! It would be an extremely expensive project to restore, But it would make an awesome hotel! Hope they save it soon
I worked there 1975-82, my late father 1960-79...RIP MCS : (
Ironic now that people half a world away want to come to Detroit just to see the MCS, and back when I worked there, it was just my place of employment. I did not know that someday many would consider the MCS as a ruined architectural gem..lol!!
love the vid man.Its kindof funny at the end when you guys are on that roof.I remember when that was a copper roof. Hmmm wonder where that copper went.and to think they actualy were thinking about making that the Det police head quarters at one time.
@robertmark34 I wouldn't say the past is any less civilized than society is to day. Keep in mind that in the same era when these great building were built and in their hayday, some of the worst working conditions existed, people were tortured and killed in prison, and the two of the three deadliest wars of all human history took place. Society hasn't really changed at all, it's just in hindsight, everything always looks "rosier".
This station was built in 1913? It's disgusting that it's not been restored. I didn't know it was legal to let a Historical Building like this just left to vandals and left to wrought. As a matter of fact, I don't think it's legal at all!
I now want to fly half way around the world to go & see this magnificent structure - I hope your city council makes the right decision & renovates this building instead of destroying it!
I'm coming back to Detroit just because of this place. The last time I was in the D, I never knew about this place. Had I known, I would have definitely came up Michigan Ave. to take a few pictures of this magnificent structure. I would like to see the interior but I don't want to go in alone or unarmed. I really would like to see this place before it gets demolished, hopefully it gets renovated, that would be awesome!
@MATTHEW3438 If it sits there long enough it might be used again. But remember the freight railroad is to start building a new tunnel outside to Canada??? In a few years most of the air service will be gone a victim of high price of fuel. Perhaps we'll have higher speed rail service. I guess the speed to Chicago is to go up back up to 110mph again. Like when Michigan Central ran it. Amtrak's business is very good. With alittle investment, it could really be great.
this is a great way to give people a look at the interior. the building was built in 1913. and the police station proposal was shot down. It is said because the building is part of the National Historic Building Registry it can't be demolished, but there is still talk about demolishing it as an "Emergency"
The building needs to be renovated and reclaimed so that no more devastation can be done to it.
I passed by MCS a couple weeks ago and saw a couple guys opening up a part of the broken up tunnel. Probably trying to explore the place. I've never seen anyone take that sort of entrance, though.
I remember my first trip to Tiger Stadium in 1993, I took a picture of this building because I thought it was cool. I did not know what it was until today. Thank you!

Yeah - I've been following that. I guess someone sued the city because of a law protecting places on the register of historic places. If anything maybe it will delay it getting torn down.
If this place were in Grand Rapids the cops would be all over it, or it would be turned into condos for assholes.
the cops and homeland security do keep an eye on the place, but the detroit cops are always busy as hell, and i dont really think its homeland security's business.
i have heard rumors of a guard, but havent confirmed them.
Thanks for the footage, I love old style architecture but was wondering who the Blues Man is that you used for the sound? BB King ? / Albert Collins ??
sure was. they also filmed part of a movie called "the island" in there. they also filmed some stupid basketball movie in there called crossover or something. we actually got in during the taping, and eventually got chased out by security lol
Likedcalico I heard it was abandon because it was to costly to run and because it did not make much business anymore, and it was not worth keeping open. It apparently cost more to run and keep the up keep on it then it would be to shut it down. It sad now because it would surely cost a hell of a lot more to get it functional again.
The stairs to the roof can be dangerous if your not watching what your doing.
Everytime I have gone in there I have ran into some homeless sleeping in there. Please, for anyone that goes into MCS, be careful. Dont get hurt or die and ruin it for everyone. Remember, that body they found last week in the warehouse elevator shaft encased in ice, is right next door to the train station.
i been in the train station a few times. its the shit at night. if u go u need to have people with u cuz there are crack heads an other people running around in there. u can get in under a vydock were sheet metal is torn off and grafetti says troys house. the floor has holes in it and the stairs has missing steps. go all the way to the roof because its a beautiful veiw of detroit.

@bagaauwk yes, there is. non profits can make money.
know of one person who turn a 8 bedroom house into a rooming house
for people who cannot afford or find housing. he rents out 7 of the room for $250 per month to people on SSI who cannot afford a house of their own..
he made it into a non-profit foundation. all the adminstration cost he can charge. he gets better treatment form the city.
you can always form a church and put the propperty under it. It will be tax free
