if you think about it, goaltending hasn't changed much other than the butterfly. goalies now always do the splits and don't really do it the way they teach it in hockey schools. for example, almost no one slides with a butter fly, they'll do a pad stacker or do the splits to the other side. it's just the equipment back then was a lot softer and they would always fold over when they'd go down on a leg. it's just my opinion.
is it me, or does it seem the goalies back in the 80's and 90's are almost half the size of today's goalies? I like the idea of guys who don't need such big of pads to make great saves like this. swing of the glove and then do the splits=boss
Also, and i don't care what anyone else says, 0:10 - 0:48 i really miss this equipment. helmet+cage goalie masks, the old brown or tinted pads, blocker, glove. Just so simplistic, nostalgic and traditional. no fashion statements. all hockey.
@TheGoalieGuru my dvd recorder has been broken... and my vcr keeps eating my tapes.. oh and my editing software is only working in reverse... but someday... it might happen.
hockeys in the 80's might have been great it relied on skill to save and not equipment but that is what makes hockey so much better today because of the skill required to SCORE so hockey today remains top
Vernon is in there 5-6 times, at 5-8 he had to have a great glove. Pads are much bigger than in the 80's/early nineties. Back then goalies were reaction goalies. Butterfly is just get down and be big. No reaction, be it with the glove or pads whatever. Some of the saves were just off the pads and raise the glove, I agree with the other guy on that, but most were great saves.
i agree with willklos i think it wont ever be the same way but i love the video the game today they rarely make glove saves at all its mostly there bi bodies
Look closely: all the goalies catch the puck...THEN lift their arm. These guys are showing good positioning, but not true reflexes.
I want to see highlights where the goalie actually uses his speed to catch the puck at shoulder height (not down low like all these examples in this video)
To be fair, a lot of the time it's the momentum of their arm moving to catch the puck that causes them to lift after the save. Lots of the goalies' initial positioning has their gloves down by their sides. You'd have to snap your arm up pretty fast to catch a 95mph slapshot above where your glove is positioned.
Plus.... even if they are faking, wouldn't you want to let the shooter know that you absolutely robbed their ass?
to me this is what makes being a goalie an art not just something you do because it seriously takes skill reflexes and a hell of alot of speed and i know first hand cus i am a goalie
im a bruins fan but vernon's save against vancouver in the 89 playoffs made me a calgary fan, i was 11. Then when Vernon went to detroit, I followed. Fernon have a great glove!
One time I was flat on my back and in between about 4 players I caught a glimpse of the puck flying towards the net and I just raised my glove and made the best save of my life. We were only kids and the shot wasn't that fast obviously but I was still the happiest kid on earth! Ill never forget that save!
why didnt they show Roy comin out of net and passing to the other team for a goal like he always did. shit goalie. patrick roy glove in air puck in net.
@tjackson76 um calm down i was just putting my 2 cents in. this video isn't titled part 1 of 4 how the hell am i supposed to know ur making a bunch of vids.
I doesn't feel like a best glove saves video, not that they are not good, they're beauties, this video seems more like a tribute to the most epic save in hockey, The Glove Save
@shaddy147 ARE U KIDDING ME you just said a goalie saving a puck is copying patrick roy ur stoopid goalies do what they can to save a puck not copy a great goalie u fucking retard
I miss the 80s-90’s type of goaltending. It was not about looking like a giant fat ass and dropping down to a butterfly on every shot. It was about kick saves, skate saves, 2 pad slides and coming out and challenging the shooter. Fuhr, Richter, Roy, Moog, Ranford, Hextall , McLane, Pang, Malarchuk and even Hrudys ugly ass was what it was all about…..
@1984Punx ..I agree....It has become a science for them. Put a 6'3 goalie dressed up like a 350 pound fat woman in the net and that’s what you get. Ime not saying goalies these days aren’t great athletes and great goalies, It’s just a different game now than it was in the 90's...
@TheDanman5000 .. Ime not saying that they didn't showboat a little, but they also were not wearing 37" giant boxes as pads. (besides barrasso and Puppa and a few others).... Goalies made the game exciting...That and bad ass fights...
@kve516 Are you calling me and all other goalies fat?? So your calling me fat when im 14 and weigh 108 pounds. Whats your problem. (I Also Play Bantam AA)
No< I am not calling you or any other goalie fat. What I am saying is Goalies today wear oversized equipment to make themselves appear larger. For example how tall are you and what size pants and pads do you wear ?
When Roy wore Lefebvre pads they were size 33, so they were shorter than yours. Ranford had size 32. It was just a different time and a different type of goaltender.
@kve516 look at brodeur though, he still plays that way and 9/10 of the announcers are saying he's losing it, look at the olympics, its happening a lot, im not saying that the way you like goalies to play is wrong, cuz trust me they look pree sick, im just saying goalies need to stop pucks no matter what, its their job and butterflying is one of the best ways to do it.
@kve516 the reason all of the goalies are like that nowadays is because its more efficant but i think its way mor fun to watch the guys play and im a goalie
if you knew anything about goaltending today you would know they don't stick a fat ass kid in net, or dropping down in a butterfly every shot. its about be in quick making the save as easy as you can. not trying to make an impossible toe up save when you can just go in the butterfly. i recommend that you watch a hockey game today and look at the style of play. goaltending doesn't have to be the way it was 20-30 years ago
@kve516 yea ur right, instead of dropping down into a butterfly they just did the splits after every save even if it was top shelf...and theres a reason that style doesnt exist anymore, players r actually smart now and pass. Look at 1:20, that #66 should be busting his ass for a simple tip instead of gliding and watching his teammate
@kve516 i do agree with you, but the game has evolved so much that goalies require to 'look like a giant fat ass'. the way sticks are made and designed now make shooting very easy, so the goalies need to match it, otherwise it would be a 10goal game, every game.
the 80's-90's hockey was the best because it was classic. but now the game's evolved so much and goalies need to match the players ability and aim.
and its still pretty easy to score if you have open ice...
@kve516 There's a reason why the old style faded away, the b-fly is just too effective. The development of leg pads designed for b-fly changed the position. Goaltending today is much better than goaltending in the 80s and 90's.
by the way this song is off of the movie requiem for a dream - terrible movie - but the song is incredible. if you like this song, check out "Monden requiem for a dream" (without quotes). im not endorsing it or anything, its just a fantastic drum and bass song.
The best out of this montage was Allen Bester's. He isn't the biggest which means most shots will force him to stretch and work for the save and it usually makes for a great sight. His form is technically smooth like a swan taking off on a lake.
@svitantti I dunno are u a goaltender? stopped an NHL shot lately? LOL, you do have a point though and truth to what your saying, they are basic saves... but granted they are at the NHL level and it's cool to watch. Even artistic in some ways. Really the only reason i do the same thing (lil wrist flip) is to keep the puck in my glove so it doesn't squirt out for a rebound.
@Maxharddrive64 Just now I've been watching Petri Vehkaoja saving WC level shots without any special moves, just calmly keeping it in his glove. USA's goalie did the same against Finland. I'd guess it is much better anyway to move the glove forward, against the possible rebound movement by puck rather than wave your glove high in the air.
You can see glove saves too, that are really hard and take effort to play the situation till the end. In here these might be good shots, but mostly clear ones
Awesome video. Excellent video and sound editing. Your a pro. I have bascially the same video collection on VHS. These saves a in my brain for many years. I play high calbre men league in goal and still over the years I can now use your video before I play. Great for visualization. Thanks. I'm a huge Bill Ranford fan. In the early 90's he had been the best goalie in the world for 2 or 3 years. He had great hands like Grant Fuhr. Marty there also.
Calm down young ones.....No need to argue. Alot of the saves you see in this clip, are infact great and amazing saves. However people forget that some of the most insane saves that are shown are made in desperation, as the goalies position at the moment of the shot on goal is not correct, therefor doing anything in your power to throw a leg, or am at the puck. Some are very lucky...however some are insane Marty has the best glove I have ever seen.
wtf are you talking about , it's not waving the glove , it's making sure by doing a forward motion that the puck stays in the glove jeeez , and you played goalie?? must not have been a pretty good one :P
did any of you know that the reason they "flash" the glove isnt for for show. The motion in which we do it is to keep the puck from its course to the net so if for some reason it pops out it goes up not behind us..
I'm kind of tired of people saying that these are basic glove saves with a hand flick because in reality, theyre actually pretty hard to pull off and take a lot of skill to make it look good. So unless you are a goalie and make saves just like these guys, please don't talk shit.
It just looks stupid if you make a save with a glove then act like a clown waving your glove around. Just make a save and then do it again. Dont need no theater.
I was a hockey goalie when I was younger, now I play floorball. I practise to make saves, not to make them look cool or like someone elses moves.
I also dont agree it is "damn hard". If you see the puck well and it is coming on the right side, any good goalie should be able to catch the puck with the glove.
Often it also takes some luck to catch the puck with only your glove hand between the puck and the goal, but if you dont give up and try, sometimes you make it.
NHL is of course a show too, not only a sport. that is why I partly understand you add a little theater in there. Some of these are still way over the top, lol. Just makes me feel embarrassed.
As an offensive player I would be more scared of a goalie calmly saving the shots rather than someone who is acting it up after a rare one.
im a little disapointed, there was not the famouse save from bernie parent?? its okay if your gonna put up another vid, please please please put him on, he was great, and still is, long live the Flyers!!
@DEATHPONYDEATH666 dude..the glove save is probably the most "flashy" save a goaltender can make. and back before the butterfly(which every goalie uses in someway except marty, he is the last of this kind of goalie) its a lot different when making the save. if you're a goalie and dont get pumped when you make a glove save on a shot that should be in the net, you must not have made that many. also, i agree when they make it all flashy on a simple shot. i dislike it. flueryy does it. blah
The idea of these glove saves though, is that they are older and therefor the modern day technique you use to make a glove save looks very easy and less motion compared to these. Remember these guys played on whatever rules and ideas they thought of.
Hey guys check out my page and vids got a nice glove save video on there as well!

I play high calbre men league in goal and still over the years I can now use your video before I play. Great for visualization. Thanks. I'm a huge Bill Ranford fan. In the early 90's he had been the best goalie in the world for 2 or 3 years. He had great hands like Grant Fuhr. Marty there also.

s a goalie when youmake that save you dont even know wats going on but when you see it on video its insane brodeur is the best
extrafrog 1 year ago
Calm down young ones.....No need to argue. Alot of the saves you see in this clip, are infact great and amazing saves. However people forget that some of the most insane saves that are shown are made in desperation, as the goalies position at the moment of the shot on goal is not correct, therefor doing anything in your power to throw a leg, or am at the puck. Some are very lucky...however some are insane Marty has the best glove I have ever seen.

@TheGoalieGuru when are you gonna make a "great saves" video?
tjackson76 1 year ago
wtf are you talking about , it's not waving the glove , it's making sure by doing a forward motion that the puck stays in the glove jeeez , and you played goalie?? must not have been a pretty good one :P

Didn't show Osgood's diving glove against the Avs in the late 90s.
And HOLY SHIT! How many times was Vernon on there? Like 8?
bishoppx 2 years ago
did any of you know that the reason they "flash" the glove isnt for for show. The motion in which we do it is to keep the puck from its course to the net so if for some reason it pops out it goes up not behind us..

yea you're right, and good example of that is at 3:23

love the rising motion of the gloves lol
azn6o4boi 2 years ago
I'm kind of tired of people saying that these are basic glove saves with a hand flick because in reality, theyre actually pretty hard to pull off and take a lot of skill to make it look good. So unless you are a goalie and make saves just like these guys, please don't talk shit.
jackXXburn44 2 years ago 2
It just looks stupid if you make a save with a glove then act like a clown waving your glove around. Just make a save and then do it again. Dont need no theater.
I was a hockey goalie when I was younger, now I play floorball. I practise to make saves, not to make them look cool or like someone elses moves.
I also dont agree it is "damn hard". If you see the puck well and it is coming on the right side, any good goalie should be able to catch the puck with the glove.
svitantti 2 years ago
Often it also takes some luck to catch the puck with only your glove hand between the puck and the goal, but if you dont give up and try, sometimes you make it.
NHL is of course a show too, not only a sport. that is why I partly understand you add a little theater in there. Some of these are still way over the top, lol. Just makes me feel embarrassed.
As an offensive player I would be more scared of a goalie calmly saving the shots rather than someone who is acting it up after a rare one.

Definitely a great vid, but anytime you're talking about great glove saves, Mike Richter has to be somewhere on the countdown...

its annoying how they do the splits and make it look so dramatic, i play goalie, its not that cool to make a glove save
DEATHPONYDEATH666 2 years ago
true , but these guys didnt play butterfly . before butterfly , this stuff was alot harder haha . im a goalie too man . go goalies :)
RickyxXxRicky 2 years ago
hey i'm a goalie also W00T
Forzoma 2 years ago
@DEATHPONYDEATH666 dude..the glove save is probably the most "flashy" save a goaltender can make. and back before the butterfly(which every goalie uses in someway except marty, he is the last of this kind of goalie) its a lot different when making the save. if you're a goalie and dont get pumped when you make a glove save on a shot that should be in the net, you must not have made that many. also, i agree when they make it all flashy on a simple shot. i dislike it. flueryy does it. blah
xtremeimport 2 years ago
maybe your just jealous and dunno how to do it?
Jsouthwell2006 2 years ago
The idea of these glove saves though, is that they are older and therefor the modern day technique you use to make a glove save looks very easy and less motion compared to these. Remember these guys played on whatever rules and ideas they thought of.
