People please don't get BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) with GJJ (Gracie Jiu Jitsu) I love all grappling, why weaken yourselves and limit yourself to one style? It's better to cross train and learn all the great styles of grappling. Oss.
... at the expense of its throws takedowns. both arts are awesome but if you want a truley complete grappling system then you must combine the two. top ranking BJJ players and judoka's respect both arts so why can people on youtube do it. renzo gracie has a black belt in judo aswell as BJJ and helio gracie named the kimura after a japanese judoka out of respect. many judoka including me cross train in bjj because we respect the progressions that it has made in ground work.
why is it always the same old arguement betwenn judo and BJJ guys? which is better?? who invented what?? judo and bjj are like brothers judo has developed the strongest and most effective throws but has very specialised and limited ground work. most of judo's ground work has been forgotten. BJJ has developed many new ground teachniques and transition which may have or not have already been done in judo. the has refined and perfected ground fighting...
If you at the history of wrestling and grappling arts, all the folk wrestling styles that have existed for thousands of years, such as Kushti, Sumo, Sseurim, Kurash, Shuai Jiao, etc. are all takedown-based at where the combatant gets defeated when he ends up or is pinned on his back. Even although judo, sambo, and catch wrestling have developed a somewhat of a ground game, their strategy was based on getting the top position in order to implement an offensive ground game.
@SakoYo Ok this is amazing out how arrogant and naive you are I am curious if you are in junior high. See you know very little of Judo or the original JuJitsu (the gentle or subtle technique) I am trying to help your dumb ass to help yourself OK kid. If you understood or studied it and have ever talked to a Gracie you would learn that these things aren't new. The origins of grappling have very little to do with sport so pinning made no difference.
@SakoYo The origins of why the Samurai needed to know how to defend and fight off their back were the same in every military. So the non-combat BJJ cult followers have new names for slight variances of very old stuff. While you BJJ cult FOLLOWERS follow the pied piper the rest of us who teach have actually studied and learned for ourselves. You cultist are so ignorant and lack the ability ro research on your own these BJJ cult leaders keep selling you the same old bullshit with a new name.
@vartan323 This is exactly the type of Guy the Gracies wanted no part of when they marketed BJJ with UFC. They handpicked their opponents but guys like Gokor, Japanese catch wrestlers , Eric Paulson etc....I love what Gokor teaches there is no question he is teaching the art of it.
@Richdanahuff Yes, because they knew a lot of the same techniques, plus leglocks. But now time have changed, because everybody knows leglocks. I was at the World BJJ Championships this weekend watching the black belts fight and lot of them were leglock specialists, a lot of them had good takedowns, and they were all very tough guys. I bet you some of those guys can give Gokor's best guys a tough fight and I don't mean any type of disrespect. I'm just saying that everyone is evolving their game.
@SakoYo I hope they would know alot of the same techniques BJJ comes from Judo, Sambo comes from Judo. I agree what the Gracies knew then has evolved way beyond the stuff they used to do. The thing is they are evolving into what Gokor and Gene LeBell were doing years ago. Rickson challenged old Judo Gene LeBell back in the 80's Gene declined he was 60+- yrs old so Gene offered to fight Helio who was only 70 the Gracies declined.
@Richdanahuff You make seem like BJJers just copied Gokor's and Gene's stuff, although I'm not doubting that they were an big influence. But you also have to understand it is not just leglocks, but there are several new guards that have been developed in recent years(x-guard, spider guard, rubber guard, 50/50 guard, cross grip guard, octopus guard, etc.) that have been developed by BJJers who were experimenting with new positions. I don't think Gene was playing x-guard back in the 80s.
@Richdanahuff Nobody is disputing that BJJ came from Judo, but claiming that BJJ has not invented any new moves? lol... I'm not sure what you have been looking at my friend.
@SakoYo OK I knew I would run into a BJJ cultist and are classic. I am #1 a grappler #2 I am a well read person. If you believe in thousands of years of grappling and yes the Egyptians even have heiroglyphics dating to 3000 BC showing grappling holds that the BJJ crowd has invented something new I would suggest you educate yourself and quit watching UFC1 and comparing it to today.
@Richdanahuff Because you don't train in BJJ, you probably think that it's all just same basic grappling and finishing holds, you probably don't understand the complexity that is involved with the guard positions such as the spider guard, x-guard, deep half guard, and de la riva guard, the escapes, different guard passing techniques, etc. BJJ is unique among the grappling art for its singular focus on mat work, all other arts focused takedowns. It is no accident BJJ that has the best matwork.
@SakoYo That is the problem I train and teach BJJ as part of my curriculum Royce spent 30 days with us even he is humble enough to state that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to grappling. Again you sound like a BJJ cultist with minor experience and education when it comes to the knowledge of ground fighting. Even Royce had an issue with the BJJ cultists which the US seems to have alot of.
@Richdanahuff You are regurgitating the same argument, just stating a general fact that everyone knows that does not refute my specific argument. You have not even bothered to show me any proof that the x-guard, rubber guard, spider guard, 50/50 guard, or any of the recently developed guards have existed before BJJ. Everyone knows grappling existed before BJJ, but there is a difference between grappling and playing spider guard.
@SakoYo I should not have to prove to you something an intelligent person should be able to reason. Funny BJJ cultist always want proof you guys always seem to want someone else to do the work you should be seeking for yourself. I think you are confused about what grappling is and how complex it is not and yes BJJ falls into the category of grappling just like catch wrestling, sambo, judo, Aikido and everything else where men grapple
@SakoYo Look the it is the practitioner not the art, the names have changed but the moves are all the same. I cannot believe you are a true student of the art every grappler knows that the moves never evolve just resurfaced. Funny I know alot of BJJ people and most know if they have wrestled or done anything else that they are all the same basic fundamentals over and over again by different names.
There are drawn pictures of combatives programs from all over the world the Japanese had an extensive system with drawings showing moves that even today are not used. The body moves only so many ways there is only so many ways to defend a choke or break an arm or a leg. There are only so many ways to lay on your back etc... only the BJJ cultists are so naive, brainwashed, and arrogant that they believe they have invented something noone else in thousands of years have ever tried.
@Richdanahuff You seem that you're understanding of BJJ is only limited finishing holds, I know that chokes and joint locks have existed in other arts for thousands of years, but BJJ is not just about chokes and joint locks. Because the rules of BJJ are unique among the grappling sports, BJJers have developed a lot of techniques and positions, and still are developing new techniques and positions to this day, that did not exist in any sport preceding BJJ.
@SakoYo Again thousands of years way back to possibly the caveman men have grappled and only the cult known as BJJ believes that they have invented something new. Being a study of history I am n ot suprised since the BJJ crowd is the most arrogant crowd in combat sports.
@Richdanahuff It is not arrogance, it just makes me up set that people try to discredit a particular art form that they only have a superficial understanding of. And what do mean by grappling? schoolyard headlock? school girl hold down? You can't use "grappling" as a catch all phrase and reduce what you see in BJJ just a bunch of locks and finishing holds that you see in other grappling arts. Now tell me, where the cavemen playing x-guard? spider guard? 50/50 guard?
@SakoYo Do you even know what JuJitsu means translated ?? Judo ?? Have you ever studied the Japanese doctrine the it used to teach the Katas to its Samurai ?? BJJ is a sport not meant for real combat that gre winto its own PHILOSOPHY not its own art. Ever studied Pelhwani wrestling, Catch as catch can, color and elbow, Russi Boi, anything other than the cult known as BJJ.
@Richdanahuff You still are not addressing the issue I brought up, please explain to me the origins of the spider guard, de la riva guard, x-guard, rubber guard or 50/50 guard? I'm sorry, you can't, you probably don't even know what those positions are because you don't do BJJ.
@SakoYo You brought up the names of some guards that are currently being used. The moves are not new do you have a reading comprehension problem ??? All BJJ cultists want proof as is the nature of your arrogance. Royce Gracie, Eddie Bravo etc....all say the same thing I have said "there is nothing new in BJJ that has not been done before." If you have been around and have seen enough people stumble across techniques that came natural to them me included.
@SakoYo I hope you are not a child. Ground fighting is not splitting atoms it is not mathematical equations that explain human origins it is not political philosophy or social science. It is two people on the ground attacking and defending there are only so many ways to do this. If you are a young teen let me know I do not want to argue with a child. Pull your head away from BJJ for a moment and study other systems you will recognize the spider guard, X guard etc...being called different names
@SakoYo I'm sorry, you can't, you probably don't even know what those positions are because you don't do BJJ.
Yes I do it and teach it, I have trained with some of the Gracies personally. However you can say whatever you want and convince yourself that BJJ has "INVENTED" new moves. You are the classic BJJ cult follower full of arrogance. Eddie Bravo gets credit for things he did not invent often by you followers. READ a book
@Richdanahuff You keep claiming that BJJers have not invented any new moves, which means that the spider guard, x-guard, rubber guard, 50/50 guard, etc. have existed before BJJ. But you do not bother to show me any proofs that they had. Not only have BJJers invented new moves, they are inventing new moves single everyday. It is fact that only someone who doesn't know what he is looking at would deny.
@SakoYo What is funny is a BJJ cult follower asked me for a video of Eqyptians from thousands of years ago a freakin video LOLOLOL and yes they wanted video proof pictures of what they trained would not do. There was no possible way Egyptians trained grappling in their combatives because they weren't Gracies. She also said that the choke wasn't what it was because the name was not the same. LOLOLOL I am afraid for the future of that poster.
@SakoYo BJJ came from Judo Helio and Carlson were Judoka raught by the Japanese, Gokor is both a Judoka and a Sambo master. Sambo was founded by a Judoka BJJ was developed by Judoka. There is nothing new under the sun when it comes to grappling what I am saying is that BJJ has not "INVENTED" any moves. If you study old writings and illustrations these moves are not new just resurfaced.
