THe motto 'look closer' - is key to AB. Look closer at our world and do we find beauty? It cost lesters marriage...what makes this a classic is that it made me really focus on being a consumer and spending money i never really had to buy more things and dress as though i was middle class so i could pretend i was better than someone. I think AB humbled me and did affect how i behaved and dressed and if that dont make it a classic well i really dont know what is.

because we live in a world where consuming or being a buyer of products and services is so pervasive and entrenched in western culture we find hard to understand or even notice an alternative is possible as that is veering toward communism... that buying stuff is effectivley bad for our health if it dominates our self worth. Lester has awoken from his sedation and is doing what makes him happy - smokin joint, little importance job, nice car, keeping fit and buffing body...and why not?

this is because he was living in a loveless marriage as his wife was obsessed with material status - mercedez jeep and 4000 dollar italian silk couch...and all the other matieral things...american dream = wealth = health = happyness. this is not the case for the Burnhams or a lot of middle class people as they are only fulfilling themselves with artificial needs and not real needs like love coz they are forgotten about in their quest for material status.

So to me, the door symbolizes a gateway through material distractions into a life full of beauty.  On the outside in the car, she is completely consumed by what the material life has done to her that she completely breaks down, while on the inside through the door, Lester and Angela are truly consumed by the beauty of the moment.

The rose petals, Lester's lust for Angela, all of these things are supposed to represent one concept: the beauty of the incredible feelings in life. Every single message in the movie points to everything described in "the most beautiful thing i've ever filmed." To me, the house itself and it's white picket fence and all its little perfections are all material possessions that distract from these feelings that are truly beautiful, which is why lester finds himself so lost in the beginning.

Like Lester says - "spectacular". i have movies signposting my life at differnt ages and this is special to me because of what it encapsulates the first time i saw it.

Oh really? I thought it could've been because of how his wife cuts a Rose off it's bush in the beginning, and how she admires it so much, almost like it was the only thing she looked forward to.

Or else the Roses with Lester and Angela could mean that he bare his internal love for her by dieing with her in his memory and bleeding to death mercilessly (just like the ending demonstrates.)

No way dude. He didn't love Angela at all, it was a beauty fixation, hence why he doesn't do her and he almost becomes a father figure to her before he dies. And he doesn't bleed to death "mercilessly", he dies in one shot and he's smiling. It's not tragedy, it's beauty. What is key is his last speaking moments before the credits, listen to what he says in that as the camera is showing other ppl and zooming out and you'll understand it all.

I have just read all of the comments made to several videos containing music or clips from American Beauty, and I have not seen even one negative comment about the film. And I couldn't agree more with all of you; American Beauty is one of the best film ever made, reffering here to acting, editing and the choice of Thomas Newman as main background music artist. I am glad to see that so many people agree with me; perhaps this really just is the best movie in the world, period!

American Beauty is what the Graduate was of the 60's. It is a cinematic masterpiece and poetic filmmaking. The acting is what Hollywood should aim for more often. Kevin Spacey is not a film star hes an actor. The American Dream is what this films about: dont let striving for material satisfaction be your only goal in life as it doesnt lead to fullfillment or necessarily is attainable for us all any way. Be happy with less and you will live a higher quality life.

It's a really great movie called American Beauty. Kevin Spacey is awesome in it, the story is great too (mid life crisis). The scene is every grown man's (secret) fantasy, to sleep with a hot teen. lol. As for the comments about Spears being nasty, she's made lot of dumb choices but she can still sing. And this is my favorite song from her.
