  • Sweet vlog! Very thotful! Ur signing flow is nice... Valor s signing is fun w his creative sidekick signer, ha ha yeah kinda sad but happy at the same time for his adventures... U r right on " bye bye" deaf hello new audience eh eh that shows lil ignorant on deaf community, I'm sure he didn't mean that way, anyway... Keep up what u stand for! Thanks.

  • I have learned so much sign language from your videos, all I can say is thanks. I never thought I could learn it.

  • I want to be a part of the Deaf Community but I know it is a hard task. Any ways to ease in?

  • Id like to say that I am hearing and I have a great fascination w/ deaf culture.. I am right now slowly but surely learning the language. (: and I agree with @Sirenhound. Im learning some stuff and I know some signs buuuuuuut not well enough to be able to not read the captions(:

just my thoughts. Thanks for reading.

  • i agree that @CaptainValor could have said it differenty, and needs to remember why he was his fans, but I also understand that not everyone that gets involved is going to be as passionate about it as @allyballybabe for example. I love ASL. I think it is a really beautiful language, also I went to a Deaf social last weekend. HAD SO MUCH FUN!! :D Never even had to ask someone to slow down, or repeat, and they understood me perfectly too!! :D

  • Great response, I agree with you 100%

  • i just want to say that you are so adorable.

  • I have to throw my support behind what CaptainValor is now doing. ASL is not his primary language, spoken English is. About ASL vs. captions, captions take a long time to add to a video. CaptainValor could have left the captions off.

Providing captions IS giving access to the deaf. In my experience with the deaf community, I have met ONE deaf individual who could not write well. Even this person understood perfectly the English I typed to her on my netbook before I got any good at signing.

  • Well said. :)

  • Wow. I couldn't have said it better myself. I appreciate you took the time to sign it also! He clearly acknowledges his representation in the deaf community by even posting a video asking if people support him or not. I'm not sure if he intended to seem selfish, but that's certainly something to be aware of. Anyhow, You are lovely and talented. I can't wait to study ASL next year to become an interpreter. You are great :) Cheers!

  • @MsFrizzyHair, I agree with you very much, though, as @CaptainValor mentioned in his response to you it was never his intent to try to create an equal access to music. If you're looking for someone who IS intending to do that, I highly recommend that you check out @SongsinSign here on youtube or Michael Chase DiMartino on facebook. He has done some fantastic work and is professionally an ASL interpreter. Hope that helps.

  • @efjgirl haha yes I'm aware of his work, thanks.

  • You pretty much said everything I was thinking when I saw his video. I was wishing I had a webcam to reply with a video. Glad you got to! Thanks for sharing these thoughts with him! =)

  • I have to read his captions, but it doesn't mean thats worse. Also, Deaf aren't they only people who watched his videos. Everyone got a chance to see and like hi, so EVERYONe helped him get to where he is. I didn't feel he was dropping the community, if anything, adding captions was a way to keep people ON. But, i do see where your coming from, buti dont think its completly on track.

  • I also wanted to mention that it was through Stephen's YouTube channel that I found kmklined channel who amazing at ASL and whose occupation is being an ASL Interpreter. So while he may have been doing it as only a hobby I fel that he did lead people to others who do it for the deaf culture. In doing so, he was in my honest opinion raising awareness on deaf culture even if his parcicipating in the language was only a hobby.

  • I have to say of all the video responses I enjoyed yours the most. You brought up excellent posts and clearly made him think. While I do think he has always done his best with ASL my deaf friends have sometimes felt he might have been able to interpret something better. That being said, they also appreciate what he was/is doing to raise awareness for deaf culture and sign language in and of itself. So bravo for your points in this video and Bravo stephen Torrence for doing what you do.

  • This is beautiful. Thank you. I find it a good point that needs adressing.

  • When you said the deaf people needed to read the captions, I was thinking "yeah, I suppose that is unfair"

It wasn't until almost the end of the video that I realised I'd been having to read the captions the whole video.

  • Also please send this to me as a video response so it will appear below the main video. I think this is one of the best yet. :)

  • @CaptainValor haha if I can figure out how to I will! Strangely, this video is the only one that YouTube *won't* let me respond to you with.

  • @MsFrizzyHair Hi.. I am currently uploading a video response about the public announcement too..I dont know how to set up a video response so i will send you and him a link to it.. I mentioned you a few times, but I couldn't remember your YouTube channel name....I will post it in the video description when its ready.

Also do you think you could help me out with the captions part? i don't know how to do that?

  • @MsFrizzyHair Thanks!

  • I don't see this very dangerous at all, I simply have no expectation from CaptainValor. He surely have created an audience that enjoyed his play. The videos will always be there and I'm sure CaptainValor will leave his old videos for others to enjoy. Here's the contradictory, he had already provided an equal access by putting down the closed caption. The subject may not be ASL but something else entirely. Who knows, he may lose his audience. Your point is clear but the rejection is just strong.

  • Very well articulated and, while my introduction to your channel was through your flute performance, I must admit that I'm quite enamoured by your unique perspective on the world. You, too, are a representative of the Deaf Community and you have done an excellent job in illustrating how much we hearing people are missing out.

  • @allyballybabe I totally agree! I've been following a lot of signers on Youtube, varying from Deaf and hoh people to interpreters (or teachers :p) to people like Stephen who just sign 'for fun' without any interest in or respect for the Deaf community and culture. Quick question to you, Ally: how are you? Around the posting of 'Back to December' you said you were kinda in a bad place. I hope things have turned around for you.

  • I'm totally with you! It's bothered me since day one that he gets all the attention, even though he's not interested in Deaf community and culture at all! Props for you video. I hope he'll reply to your video and tell us all how he feels about this.

  • @LEDKnecht I hope he replies too.

  • Well signed well said yall should listen to her

  • To be honest - I don't think the videos were ever something that he was interested in pursuing. He never became involved in the Deaf Community, or even using ASL. He just took a class or two and therefore felt entitled to post a video, in which news stations, newspapers and hearing ASL students became engaged with. It's sad - and I talked to him about it before... but.. this just shows that it was never really FOR equal access.. that was just something along for his ride. And that's sad.

  • also - beautiful, fluid signing. :)

  • @allyballybabe Yeah, you're right. And it always gets me sick whenever I think about it. I never really had the expectation going in that I would become any sort of touch point or introduction to Deaf culture for so many hearing people. I found it a fun performance medium to explore, but did what I could to route fans to people like yourself or Keith Wann for a more solid introduction to Deaf culture. (1/2)

  • @allyballybabe What I'd like to do going forward is encourage the fan base that's grown up around me to investigate and learn about Deaf culture for themselves through collaborative creation. I have a few ideas right now but I'm still very open to suggestions. I'll be releasing a new video tomorrow with sort of a fun challenge for the community, and I hope it will spark more such efforts. If anything though, y'all have helped me realize I should probably devote a video to this topic soon. (2/2)

  • @all I think that it happens from a lack of understanding Deaf culture.I don't think it was intentional on his part but people tend to get excited and want to post up vids of what they have learned without knowing what they might be getting into.People start watching, get intrigued and you become a 'face' of ASL. Since SAB, I have seen a lot of girls treat this lang. as a fad, something trendy for the moment 'OMG want a Deaf BFF! They don't mean any harm but their unawareness causes it.

  • VERY well said! :) Amen!

  • @allyballybabe thanks! and yea I agree...it is unfortunate....Coincidentally I was watching a vlog last night and it ended up being about how when hearing people take advantage of the deaf community/sign language that it's a form of audism. I do hope he responds because I'm interested in what he has to say about it. but thank you for your comments :)

  • @MsFrizzyHair I have gotten comments to this effect from the Deaf community in the past. I guess that's one reason I stopped making the videos. I didn't feel like I was really doing the language or the community justice, and didn't have the right ideas for how to do it better. :\

  • @CaptainValor Hey there, thank you for your honest reply and I really appreciate what you said. I think devoting a video to this topic would be a great way to address the issue. Especially if your viewers are still hungry for song interpretations (and I think they are) it would be an awesome way to promote the MANY Deaf (and hearing) song-signers on youtube who do really wonderful work.

  • Fact: facial expressions are way more awesome when signing.

  • I wish I could marry u... I'm so touched and impressed with what you say... I mean 'saying' using sign language!

  • Your awesome hun. :)

  • Coming from a taken man, you are very pretty. Love the sign language!
