It's not a question of modernity.

About Ryan, the first problem is that her voice sounds very false, like someone who read a text without understanding it. For a french speaker, it is awful to listen. The second problem is the clip: A bimbo who dance in an airplane (!) while the song talks about the jazzwoman Ella Fitzgerald and black people. I'm sure that if it were the contrary (a french doing that with a famous English song), you'd found that terrible and you'd be right.
