There were permanent magnets in these hard disks, but they were used in the drive's voice coils, but they weren't put there to intentionally erase your data.

they have to get rid of any hard drives this way that have had any peoples details on. Even if you wipe them you can still get everything back. So take care with your porn collection, your mum can still get her hands on it.
