If you're here talking this film down AND you're a fan of the Horror genre you should be kicked square in the ass. Granted this film is dated but it is still one of the originals that stands the test of time. There aren't too many (almost) 40 year old films that hold up this well.
Watched this last night for the first time for a long after I ordered it off Amazon.com, and it'e one of my all time favorite Horror films as it always has been. Ironically, Leatherface uses the Chainsaw once in the film which is to kill Franklin at that scene when he appears in the flashlight which is my favorite shot of the film, because it's really horrific. Regardless, it will always be a classic and it makes the remake look like trash because of the realism it has.
This is truly a masterpiece one of the most scariest things I have ever seen. I mean anybody or any critic who finds this disgusted and says its sadistic violence is stupid. This is what influence many slasher movies in the future and the suspense of it feeling real, as well as setting a boundary where something like this can REALLY happen in real life. The fact that people who are this psychotic is truly scary and there are people like that. That's why Tobe Hooper is a genius.
Probably my favorite horror movie ever, but there isn't a lot of true story behind. Just genius horror making, but hey the true story thing must have worked because it's one of the most famous horror movies ever.
@shreddintheaxe I don't know about that. There was Silence Of The Lambs (1991) Great movie, there was Scream (1996) which had some likeable moments. There was Ringu (1998) which was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Saw (2004) was pretty good.
You may think I'm crazy, but I have a theory that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 Remake) is what ruined horror films. I feel that it's what started the stupid big budget, CGI horror movies (and remakes) we see today.
@LongDieseldog The Silence Of The Lambs was a great movie, i agree with you. and yes i liked saw, part 2, part 3, part 4. and 5. the first saw sucked. and scream was a total ripoff from Halloween. notice the guy in scream carrying a knife and wearing a mask, then notice micheal myers carrying a big ass knife and wearing a halloween mask as well. and as for the texas chainsaw massacre, the 1974 verison was the best. the rest sucked.
@shreddintheaxe The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is my favorite horror movie. None will disagree that Scream was inspired by Halloween, but a Ripoff?? thats debateable. There's reference to Halloween through out the movie. The thing about Scream is that it makes fun of all the horror movies cliches.
The Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was undoubtedly the best, it should have never spawned a sequel.
I forgot to mention there was also From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) which was stupid, but awsome!
@LongDieseldog i've seen all the texas chainsaw massacre sequel's and remake's, and they all failed lol. from dusk till dawn was stupid, but funny at the same time
im looking for a film quite like this ... all i can remember about it is there is 2 hillbilly type kids with shaven heads and dungares i think that beat up another kid with black hair i think and they have a ramp that is bult over a river , and they ride there bikes into it ?
any help plz will be apprecieated
i watched it in 1998 about dont no if it came out then ?
@camillabrustuen em hav u even watched this "film" let me gues ur 15 and u like new big budget horror movies and remakes that are so cramed with cgi it makes ur eyes bleed! wel for 1974 this film was the shit, it defined slasher movies and stil to this day inspires soo many directors and actors. and sure for todays standards it might not be as jumpy or gorey as some new horror films are but for me i cant remember any other film that freaked me out so much when i watched it 1st.
@paudiemaguire1 im 17 and ive been watching horror films for only 2 years ive seen the old and new ones and ive never seen 1 as spine chilling and as disturbin as dis i just lov the grainy atmospher of the movie 2 and its my 2nd favorite next to halloween.
@paudiemaguire1 Let's check out the facts, "bro". I'm 17 and I don't like the "big budget horror movies and remakes that are so cramed with cgi it makes ur eyes bleed". I just said it was bad, do you want to know why? My friends and I heard it was good, so we thought what the hell, let's watch it. The true story? It was only screaming and kicking. I mean, dude, maby it's classic, but to sit in front of the TV for a couple of hours to get a headache, bitch please.
@camillabrustuen The Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was not "bad" It's one of the best horror films ever made.
It's fine if you and your friends didn't like it, it's not for everyone. I guess you just didn't understand what makes it so good which is fine. I agree with you that it's very loud. But like I said, of course there's people out there (like you) that won't like it, but that doesn't give you the right to say weither it's bad or not, and quite frankly it makes you look silly...
shocking film that really set the stage for modern horror films. What made it great was that it really didn't rely on gore or blood during the grisly deaths, but was more effective through implying the nature of the murders.
@BlayzedBlue the film didn't have much gore due to tobe hooper originally wanting and conceiving the film as a pg rated but it was so brilliantly filmed and executed that it created an intensity that got it an R rating anyway.
Still to this day, one of the most F'ed up experiences I've ever had watching a movie. Tobe Hooper is either a genius or a complete psychopath lol. Just one of the most horrifyingly real slasher films ever made. Truly disturbing but undeniably well crafted.
Never has a chicken cluck has been so terrifying. I hear screams when I bite into my Kentucky fried parts. I can't even finish my instant mashed potatoes. :(
People actually think this is scary? I could understand if it was scary back then, but I mean come on people, it was an awesome movie, just not scary.
@steelslither Why not? What would you consider scary? I mean, I seldom get scared by movies now that I'm an adult, but compared to other horror movies that try to replace good story telling, character acting, and mood setting with gore, cheese, and special effects, I think it deserves a place in the top 10 of the horror genre.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a masterpiece indeed, i also liked the Exorcist in terms of terrifying films. The Shining, and Alien rank right up there with these other films.1970's & 80's were a brilliant time for film. So many great directors creating powerful films back then.
this kind of old movie like this is the most horrible and terrifying movie than the present horror movies because this is the first movie based on the true event and based on the true psychotic serial killer. But the most scary on this is if one of us were the victims.
Y'know Gunnar Hansen said in interviews that he prepared for the role of Leatherface by going to a mental hospital and interacting with severely retarded people to get a feel for what it would be like to have Leatherface's mentality.
I saw this when I was 12 back when it came out and I didn't sleep for a week. This movie still freaks me out today and is one of the only truly scary horror movies. It just has an element of realism to it, nothing fake about the story or production, it's entirely possible that some nut like this really exists if you think about it.
@MJstallonage007 We all know it wasn't a true story, everyone knows that it only says that it was based on a true story in the trailer as a marketing ploy.
@bernhl It wasn't based on a true story, it was loosely based on a serial killer, i've known that for ages, being based on a true story means it was based on events that actually occured, there was no group of teenagers, there was no family of cannibals, there was just one serial killer who inspired one of the films character's and very minor plot points in the film.
Ok i know wen u watch this at nite its not scary ...but
I saw this ant nite wen my family was camping and i was scared to death { p.s i saw the 1974 versoin } and i personally think it was terrfying and after that the i was in the rv lookin at my uncle and cousins and wen we slept i yelled in the middle of nite i praticlly woke up the whole campsite.
This trailer wasn't scarey. But I would like to see this version. I have seen the 2003 (something) remake when I was in highschool I was freaked out by it. But I did some research and found out that this didn't actually happen the way the movie spells it out. It was actually a series of different crimes by different guys that inspired this movies series. Good classic horror, where would we be with out it.
some idiot told me that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre happened in Houston. That was the Texas Mass Murders! That was a true story! Then I found out that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was fiction! The horror house used in the film was transported to another location and transformed into a restaurant! Crazy Texas! Austin is awesome!!
great movie i love it... watch our music video to "Night of the living dead" on our channel. We are a austrian punk band... the music video is called "Die Nacht der lebenden Toten" this is german and means "The Night of the living Dead" enjoy
Well the true story took place in Plainfield, Wisconsin, not Texas, and the real leatherface was Ed Gein.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was an inspirational of Ed Gein, also movies like Psycho by Norman Bates, Deranged, and Silence of the Lambs. Ed Gein died in 1984 at a mental hospital, heart failure and old age
@TheAbsta123 Kid, think about it. It's from 1974. What special effects did they have that could please your Graphics Hunger? Your "This acting sucks, so i'm going to troll the trailer." need?
Grow up, and don't even try and defend yourself in an argument with me.
I dunno....I never really like old movies...the acting always bothers me. I actually laughed while watching this trailer. Hm, I think I'll watch the newer version.
@TheQuentinStuckey I agree! People can praise a lot of the modern films and these ATROCIOUS re-makes all they want, BUT, they'll NEVER have the "edge" over TCM!
the idea of not having a cell phone on long Texas country roads, where homes are a half mile from the road, towns close down at dusk, and maybe one open gas station in like a 100 miles, is foreign to you young people.
I'm disappointed in the horror movies that have come out lately. We need more movies like this instead of all the paranormal shit that's so repetitive.
@z0mb13t4c0: Well, Rodriguez, Tarantino and co. made Grindhouse, which I thought was great, though I was born in 1975 and was too young to have experienced the real stuff when it was around. Unfortunately, the film didn't do well at the box office.
@1s22s22p63s23p64s2 I wuz in Huntzville prison, so I see a lot worse. I saw a bunch of Mezicans gang rape a 16 year old black boy. His butthole turned insides out. Then they branded the word "puto" on his skull
I know the song Sabbath Bloody Sabbath weren't writ about this moovie, but it's like relased the same year. Also the kids are killed on a Sunday afternoon. Groovy coinkidink I be thinkin
@ebonics4everyone You are a fuckin' idiot....go word for word with me and lose. Stop commenting on things that are actually cool and shut up asshole....

In my opinion, this is one of the scariest movie ever made.
1. It's a true story
2. The tone they used with their cameras
3. It may happen again

There's something so brutal and disturbing about THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE that no horror film today could possibly accomplish...
TheQuentinStuckey 5 months ago
@TheQuentinStuckey I agree! People can praise a lot of the modern films and these ATROCIOUS re-makes all they want, BUT, they'll NEVER have the "edge" over TCM!

the idea of not having a cell phone on long Texas country roads, where homes are a half mile from the road, towns close down at dusk, and maybe one open gas station in like a 100 miles, is foreign to you young people.

I'm disappointed in the horror movies that have come out lately. We need more movies like this instead of all the paranormal shit that's so repetitive.
z0mb13t4c0 5 months ago
@z0mb13t4c0: Well, Rodriguez, Tarantino and co. made Grindhouse, which I thought was great, though I was born in 1975 and was too young to have experienced the real stuff when it was around. Unfortunately, the film didn't do well at the box office.
