I narrowly escaped death on 152 westbound last night. Truck jack knifed in front of me against the central divider.. I don't know how, but I managed to swerve into a gap and got through with no contact. Still shaken up.
@akasenally: Wow, be careful out there! Some drivers don't respect the yellow warning signs, advising drivers to slow down to 55 MPH thru those curves, heading westbound down that steep descent.
@FreewayBrent Yeah, thanks man.. I think it was a combination of things, blind-ish corner, breakdown on the side of the road with flares on, and glare from the headlights coming up the hill. I think the truck driver was going too fast and panicked. Very lucky indeed...
New driver here. So I drove over 152 last month. The 2 lane section of 152 was bad due to all the trees and the native of 2 lane blood alleys, but what would you caution for on the 4 lane section?
I remember there used to be an old graffiti that read "Carter 76" or "Carter 1976" located on a rocky cliff on the westbound side of the highway between the summit and Casa de Fruita. I just drove on this route recently and looks as though the graffiti was removed, probably by Caltrans.
When I was younger, our family took this route to get on 101 to San Jose. It was nighttime, and the winding road scared me. Now I can see that it is a pleasant drive with some great scenery.
Another great video Brent. Are you shooting through your windshield or have you mounted a camera outside of your vehicle. Your videos are so clean. mind sharing your set up...or is it secret? Thanks for the great videos!
There is no excuse for an important artery as this to be one lane each way which is the case East out of Gilroy. Same thing with CA 58 East of Mojave (in stretches) to I-15...
And most of those accidents happen on the western side of the pass...That 156/152 intersection was dangerous..Thank god for the flyover ramp put in a few years back.
@Coastergeekperson04: Exactly. I only remember being on it once, when I was 5, and strangely enough, I remember CalTrans constructing the adjacent and current 4 lane divided highway. In fact, CalTrans had already completed the overpass, over the connecting road to Casa De Fruita Parkway.
I sometimes use 152 to get from Sacramento to the Central Coast. I sometimes take 5-33-152-156-101 when traffic is bad in the Bay Area (my preferred route is usually 5-205-580-680-101) Very nice video, and the music goes perfectly with it!
Let me ask you what is the safer highway to travel. Coming from LA going to Monterey. Should we take I-5 North to the 152 West to the 156 OR Just take the 101 North? I am not concerned about scenery or speed but Safety such as guard rails, divided lanes between north/south or east/west. Thanks for the advice!!! Great video.
Yeah, it really is. One can take I-680 to I-580, but that certainly involves more time. One could also take CA 198 to I-5, but at that point, you're probably better off just driving all of 101 down to Los Angeles.
It looked like your camera was a little off-center, pointing just slightly to the left. Still, a great ride that I need to add to my to-do list. And catchy music too.
Fairly busy, but nothing even close to what the roadway carries today. Most drivers from Silicon Valley would utilize I-580 East to I-5 South, and then take CA 152 East at the point where I-5 and CA 152 meet up (at this end of this video). The section of CA 152, between I-5 and CA 99 has been a 4 lane, high speed divided highway for I believe 4 decades now.
@FreewayBrent You are correct that the stretch of 152 between I-5 and CA99 is much older as a four lane road than West of 5..The road surface is concrete, something you don't see too often anymore.
Scenic road! I was surprised with the heavy traffic actually. The mountains seem to end quite abruptly at the end of the video, it goes from hills to plains within a mile.
Yeah, CA 152 gets a decent amount of traffic, simply because it's *THE* main road from I-5 to US 101 and all of Silicon Valley. Factor in that CA 152 is the main route that Bay Area drivers take to connect to Fresno (either by taking I-580 to I-5 to CA 152 to CA 99, or US 101 to CA 152 to I-5). Then you have the large number of commuters from Los Banos to the Bay Area or the Monterey Bay Area, and it all sums up to one pretty busy hilly highway.
Great video; I've actually been on this highway and it is very scenic; BUT you said the video stated at the Eastern end of Pachheco Pass when I'm pretty sure you meant the Western end. Thats one for me and I,m from Pennsylvania :P
Funny, I've lived in California for practically my entire life, but it was always my understanding the Pacheco Pass was actually the highest point along the 2-lane section. But, I think you're actually right about this, which in this case, the actual peak of the pass is around 3:54 in this video.

The whole highway used to be on Casa de Fruita Parkway, it was dangerous pulling out on that road.

I remember traveling on this road back in 1997 and thinking it was the only logical shortcut to I-5 southbound from San Jose.

Interesting highway. Being the main link from Fresno to San Jose must have made the old highway pretty busy.
