The music industry should have been tackling the problem of downloading as soon as the internet started spreading. They dropped the ball. They should have had the foresight to counter a problem like that. Sorry, but they screwed up. And now we download for free. People are never going to pay for something they can get for free.

When an artist goes to record an album, the record labels loan them money. Record sales pay back the loan. If it doesn't sell, the artist still has to pay back the loan. Where does the money come from? Maybe touring, but without an album, how do people hear of them? of them. And, unless you are Metallica, touring pays for the touring (hotels, food, transportaion, advertisment, management, rent, etc.).
Paying for music downloads damages the global economy because you're not paying for physical materials. It costs the same to produce one digital music download as it does to produce a thousand identical copies.
what about the cost of the hundreds of people who were paid to record, edit and mix the music? What about the cost of the music videos? What about the directors, gaffers, electricians, PAs still photographers? Some of the best people in the country get paid $1,000 for a day of work. Sometimes, that is $10,000 for a few minutes of video. Wouldn't you want to get that back?

MUSICIANS DONT MAKE MILLIONS anymore. The music biz has gone down the toilet. You will see less quality videos and records as a result. Bands cant survive off concerts. People download not to rip their fave artist off, but because its more easily accessible. I mean how many times do you go on itunes and find the artist you want is not listed? Downloading provides an almost infinite amount of choices as compared to your local cd store which contains only the top 10 albums on the billboard charts.

Without file sharing I bet you half of the people today would still be listening to the backstreet boys or gwen stefani. idiot educate yourself before making stupid ass comments, with the advent of the pc and cds congress faced new legislation called the millennium act now, this act would set the ground rules for much of today, basically though it states this congress okayed cd burning (around this time portable music players using memory were coming around), but they turned down dvd burning, that is why the ipod and the itouch was invented to continue apple's niche in the portable music player market

Logical Downloading is awesome.. (formerly known as illegal downloading) it brings out young new artists, so people can test them out without spending money they would never spend unless they were sure they were good... and also it allows them to be exposed faster to the world and have concerts and still get rich, keeping the music industry alive and the poor happy because they dont have to spend 1000 dollars on 1000 songs... . or 10 000 in my case XD

From a technical point it is the deprivation of potential, which for some people is largely justified.
Lot of mud on both sides, and I mean prop both sides but that just means that when the MPAA grows up it can start discussing what the customer actualy wants and what is practical to give instead of trying to prop up the currend business model.

Yeah it is so horribly skewed. They call it stealing, but there was no product that was created and then stolen, so no lost income. They lose the potential income they might have gotten. Might is the key word. Like younggem said really it shouldn't even be a matter of law. Like you shouldn't go to jail for it, or be fined. Even the personal lawsuits are ridiculous because they often target the people downloading, not the people uploading.

When an artist goes to record an album, the record labels loan them money. Record sales pay back the loan. If it doesn't sell, the artist still has to pay back the loan. Where does the money come from? Maybe touring, but without an album, how do people hear of them? of them. And, unless you are Metallica, touring pays for the touring (hotels, food, transportaion, advertisment, management, rent, etc.).

what about the cost of the hundreds of people who were paid to record, edit and mix the music? What about the cost of the music videos? What about the directors, gaffers, electricians, PAs still photographers? Some of the best people in the country get paid $1,000 for a day of work. Sometimes, that is $10,000 for a few minutes of video. Wouldn't you want to get that back?

MUSICIANS DONT MAKE MILLIONS anymore. The music biz has gone down the toilet. You will see less quality videos and records as a result. Bands cant survive off concerts. Record labels now cant afford tour support. Also, street vendors sell unauthorized merchandise. The bands are laughed at and told "sue me". It's a real shame that we the public are "ripping" ie "ripping off" musicians by file sharing. Then we go to their concerts and expect them to be our buddies.

People download not to rip their fave artist off, but because its more easily accessible. I mean how many times do you go on itunes and find the artist you want is not listed? Downloading provides an almost infinite amount of choices as compared to your local cd store which contains only the top 10 albums on the billboard charts.

Without file sharing I bet you half of the people today would still be listening to the backstreet boys or gwen stefani. filesharing has acualy helped music biz because more and more artists decide their one fait and don't let the recordlabels decide for them. another positiv thing is that music is now going to shift its focus from CD to live music, which is great.
