Dr. Hook and Shel Silverstien put out some awsome music too bad many didn't have a chance to realize the priceless talent of Shel and Dr. Hook. This is my favorite song by then and hard to find for my collection.
Used to play this song and never made through without crying. A girlfreind once said to me, "It's a kind test - if you don't cry singin it, you need to maybe learn why." My mom loved this song.
Who was at TJ's Greenwood lake NY late 70's , We the audience fucked with the bands head. We wouldn't let them play till the sound dude who checked tested all through our dinner was made to do a command performance of check test for us one more time before the band could play. we were adamant too. The Band loved us for it and kept it rolling all night. We Want Check Test, was the mantra till the sound dude came out for us.. I guess you had to be there.
my ENTIRE family is obsessed with Dr. Hook and my dad used to sit and cry to this song because his family was super poor and his mom used to do this! I love Dr. Hook
@davidakatheman awe, nice, david, you seem sentimental. nice quality. my son was raised on this and john prine, with a smidge of pink floyd, led zepplin, .... but the 1st time, i'm sure, that i ever heard the name "shel silverstein" was several months ago when someone posted a web site about him and his children's books.
I had this album way back when and I always though this was a great song. I saw Dr. Hook preform it on The Midnight Special and bought "Belly Up" soon after. Haven't heard it in many years, thanks for the post!

This song makes me think that when times are tough it could be worst. At least I have a roof over my head.

I remember that they had as much fun on stage as the audience had.

For a bunch of guys that acted up as much as they did on stage, they played some beautiful music together.
