It is widely considered one of the most brutal battles of the Napoleonic Wars. The extreme brutality and vicious street fighting has prompted comparison to the Battle of Stalingrad. The battle is perhaps best summed up by General Palafox's reply to the French upon being asked whether he would consider an armistice: "War and the knife." commonly mistranslated as "war to the knife"
French assailed the breaches and forced their way into the city. However where this would usually have resulted in a sacking, the populace and the regular Spanish troops were far from defeated and horrific street fighting took place instead.
Individual battles were remarkable for their ferocity.
The end finally came when the French opened a second front on the northern bank of the Ebro. Spanish finally surrendered Most of the city lay in ruins, and around 54,000 people had perished in the siege
Following the withdraw of the French to the line of the Ebro after the first siege, the Spanish prepare the defenses for next siege.
On 20 December 1808 the French army of Marshall Moncey army took the heights of "Torrero ", south of the city. Monceys calls for surrender: "peace and capitulation" answer: " war to the knife".
Fighting was confined to the outlying defenses for the next month as the French slowly pushed closer to the walls with their entrenchments, soon breaches were made..
After the first Defeat of an Imperial Army in open field at Bailen ( A full French army was defeated, and General Dupont and its 18000 men capitulated and were took prisoners.. but that is other story) all the french army in Spain retract to the other side of river Ebro.
The First Siege of Saragossa was a bloody struggle. A French army under General Lefebvre besieged, stormed, and was repulsed from the Spanish city of Zaragoza over the summer of 1808.
Zaragoza's fortress was in deplorable condition (Roman walls!) and proved no obstacle. Lefebvre tried to assault the city, with no success.
French received reinforcements and siege guns, demolished large sections of the city and captured others by storm, only to be forced out again in furious street fighting.
I am from Ssaragossa (Zaragoza in spanish) and its 200 aniversary of the sieges of Zaragoza, Yes, the sieges! there were two sieges. In the first one the population of Zaragoza and the garrison of the cit, defeated the best army in the world. French supossed that taking the city would be as easy as arrive and enter, because its garrison was of only 200 soldiers and it wasn´t a fortified city, but.. they had a bitter surprise..
Saragossa was a big city in 1808, not a village...
