Well the university has very important things to keep preserved as well. From the very many irreplacable documents in the Libraries to the computer systems in the basements near the river, the University had a lot to lose.
Sorry but this comment pissed me off. Thousands, Millions of people have attended the U of I...and it's a place of education, a foundation, and a home to many students. I can totally understand why people were trying to preserve such a place other than their homes...or other peoples' homes.
Exactly, I was really clueless as to what was going on around me, and I credit that to the end of my semester and travelling. I had no idea that it was that serious. Even now it is only getting worse.

Your disassociation with the catastrophic impact of the flood is astounding. You are watching people fighting for their homes and you speak of it as though you are watching a commercial.
Unfortunately it is the sad truth. I only happened to be arriving in Iowa the day before, for a summer program. After learning more about the flood and telling my friends from CA, TN, and MS (just to name a few states) none of them had any idea of 1) what was going on, and 2) the severity of the situation. This was taken on Tuesday, well before the media blew it up, so don't you dare come for me.
you shoulda seen the coralville strip

University of Iowa has thousands of employees. For shame on the people that helped them sandbag when there were actual houses being flooded nearby.
