Please tell me that this isn't what happens to the scalp when you get dreadlocks; I have been weighing the option to loc my hair (and I wish that you were in Dallas, cause you are SO informative about this!), but I am deathly afraid of having huge blotches in my scalp because of this.
@mistakrunk it doesn't happen all the time. Depends what method you use to retwist your roots and how often you do them. You mainly find that this happens when people go to the salon to do their locs--that's certainly what I noticed with my own hair. I do my locs myself now with the interlocking method and they're thicker and healthier. It also depends on your hair type. Everyone's different. I'd say go for it. Well maintained locs look beautiful :)
@TheElfThatLied I see; I like well maintained locs. I've seen locs on folks that look like they have long, free flowing hair (as I would want mine to be if I ever go tthem). But then I've seen videos of people who are BALDING, or have huge patches of their scalp showing. I'm 27, with thick 4a hair with a nice curl and wave texture to it. And I'd just be mortified if I attempted to get locs, ended up with patches all over my head, and had to chop off two+ years of growth.
@mistakrunk ah, we have the same hair type, and as you know type 4 hair can be very fragile. With locs it's all about how you look after them: natural products, good moisture and healthy eating. Tbh, locs don't always have to look sleek and uniform as mine don't. I interlocked mine for the first time a few weeks ago and I don't plan to retwist the roots for another few months from now. When you let them do their thing you won't get the "balding" effect xXx
Thanks for all ur info Damianjw84 I will be a year in with my loc journey and my lock are starting to thin out Im gonna wash sometime this week coming up and leave it alone like u said :-)
