It is currently Christmas eve. I dusted off the Ajax and decorated it with Christmas lights again. I fire it up a couple or three times a year. In the field they normally run straight pipes for the exhaust and sometimes even run a "barker". I added a big truck muffler as my neighbors are pretty close. Still runs like a Swiss watch. The exhaust is plenty loud but otherwise the fan and belt noise are the loudest things.
haha. i was in an internship with Chevron in South Texas about 9 months ago. In the RGV we only have one actuall crude well that runs an AJAX. The rest is 99% natural gas. It just so happened that my trainer/partner had to go service that well one day and I rode along as usuall. Except I had never seen an AJAX...or heard one. The thing miss-fired and i damn almost crapped my pants. Those things are HELLA loud. And this brought back memories. Neat!
I did not keep track of the cost. The cylinder needed to be sleaved costing several hundred dollars and it had a bit of fire damage. If your engines are basically intact and you are looking at the normal rings, gaskets, basic stuff, you should be able to get it done for a few hundred in parts. Radiator rebuild, cylinder sleave, magneto, add up in a hurry.
@keith0alan The parts for the little 7 1/2x 10 are higer than for the biger engines,I know a guy who has a couple of these in his pipe yard that need to be rebuilt, theres also a 8 1/2 x 10 DP with factory electric start
