I totally agree with you about the "ideal s-line shape". I do not see it at all. Don't get me wrong the Korean women I see on various videos or in person, all I see are straight lines. They remind me of my 10 year old niece before she started puberty.
I can vouch for this. People notice my changes in weight a lot here, although it's usually "Wow you've lost a lot of weight" because I have been getting smaller since I've been here. I've also been told that I look like (insert random famous white person here). The funny thing is that now that I've been here for 6-7 months, white people are starting to look the same to me.
Whenever I ask people what ethnicity I look like, they always answer KOREAN...the thing is I'm Mongolian, not Korean O_o I even checked online "why do I look korean" and it turns out some of my facial features are korean-like >< what makes it more suspicious is that my brother(who also looks korean) got addicted to Super Junior(like me) when he was only 16 months! My 3 other cousins are also obsessed/addicted with kpop and kdrama(one of them looks korean) =_= this just might be a coincidence...
(I just kind of discovered you guys and you are awesomes~~)
That was interesting indeed. I do have one question for Martina~~ How tall are you? Since you said that the SNSD girls are shorter than you even with heels~~
I'm have average brown skin, I've got extensions (ahem.weave.ahem), and I'm more ... thicker on my rump. I'll look like a weird, ol' too-tanned, bootylicious, plump-lipped, flamingo (since I'm 5'6 and only 13) girl to Korea.
i want to go to korea and im going to japan in september, i'll blend somewhat cause i have really dark hair, dark brown eyes, and im only like idk 118lbs give or take a few. but i'm 5'5" 3/4 so ill be soooooooo tall compared to everyone. -.-*sigh* oh well
okay yes i know that 5'5" is not actually that tall but it feels like it cause all my friends are shorter than 5'4". lol
Great vid. Amazing stuff. I'm a teacher in Korea as well. I've been here for a few years. So, this is all things I'm aware of as well. Nonetheless, great stuff. Peace
i don't think asians all looks alike at all, one time i showed my friend a kpop video and asked her who she liked the most, she said well they all kinda look the same.... O_o me: what do you mean, they don't look alike one bit... i will admit though sometimes i can't tell a few kpop girl idols apart, but i can to boy groups immediately haha
omg...i agreee with you two... i have a best friend and she is korean and im hmong/chinese/thai and omg every where we go ppl think we are twins or sisters..its like wow "so we really look alike?" lol she has curly hair and a pointy nose and kinda tan lol and i have straight hair and light skin and not a pointy nose..lol wft ppl? lol <3 u too!! i miss korea. lol ppl stare at us all the time in korea ...like we are weirdos lol
agreed, a little change and they'll say you've gained some weight. i've seen it in a few variety programs to when they get up from sleep and they look the same they'll so "oh, your face is bloated" or something, or am i the only one who doesn't see it O.O
3. Being a black girl too <--- Strike 3 And I'm out of the running ladies and gents!
Welp, If I ever go to Korea (which doesn't seem likely), then I'd probably be considered a walking, black land whale. lol
And thanks to my exposure to some K-Pop and J-Pop, I honestly know the feeling of when people say "All Asians look a like" when they really don't. They're really not that hard to tell apart if you actually take a look at them.
@Psychooncrack8 don't be silly, EVERYONE including blacks and koreans can fall in love with one another. hate to say it, but Simon and martina are just spouting stereotypes. The korean community is as diverse as the black, white, or gay community, people all have different tastes.
everyone has a different way of looking at things. nothing is more important than having confidence in yourself. im chinese-american so like many of u, i have caucasian friends that call me skinny and asian friends that call me fat. but i dont listen to any of them. im aware of what my body looks like and how i feel about myself. i'll exercise if i feel like losing weight and eat more if i want to gain weight. its all based on how i feel in my clothes and doesnt mean im weight-obessed in any way

i totally agree on the stick thing, it almost pains me to see female idols look like underfeed sticks and called curvy, while a girl with a natural curvy body like hyunsung from Secret gets called overweight.
PS: i dont like snsd's legs because they look like they will break if a so much as touch them0.o
my sister says asian people look alike...yet we're both friends with asian people and she likes some kpop groups..and we're half filipino...so....i question her sometimes ><
@knockbarbiedown wow white people from north america are very tall, they're taller than asians but they are taller than hispanics too n.n ,here in mexico koreans are about the same height and weight as an average mexican or maybe quite taller or a lot taller, but not so much,so we in mexico don't see big diference with koreans in height like white people n.n
I'm Asian and I was like with a group of people at my old school and then one of them (being Caucasian) asked "do we all look the same to Asians?" And I was like -_________-" NO.
I totally agree about how media plays a role in how people perceive about their body. It's unfortunate that media has more influence than parents nowadays.
My Ghanaian family was exactly the same when I went there. What we call chubby Ghanaian people call MORBIDLY OBESE!! I'm not sure where it started but it seems like that's the way it is. My grandparents were also like that when they came back from Jamaica. I'm already skinny so they never said that to me but I would feel uncomfortable if someone who wasn't my family said that.
I don't know if it makes me nuts, but i sort of agree with the korean's way of looking at ideal body types. I see the Ultra-thin bodies of the girls from f(x) and 2NE1 and Girls Generation as super beautiful and what i look up to (:
I definitely have noticed that about Korea, even though I don't live there. The idols are always so skinny and the media blows it way out of proportion. I have been watching MBLAQ's Idol Army, and the host of the show keeps bringing up SeungHo's "yakuza" body (which means that he has a "round" stomach), but he looks skinny to me. I always feel bad for him because it seems like they're making fun of him. =( People's perceptions are really sooo different around the world.
That means I would probably be considered normal/average size in Korea. I'm a naturally skinny person and here in France I sometimes get called anorexic... Which I'm not. It's just a question of metabolism.
But anyway... Really interesting video as always :)
And what you say about media and celebrities is so true!
@kyuhyunsaranghanda Well, you would be surprised how hard it is to love myself... today I have been called an emo, a lesbian, sort of pretty, ugly, mean, unhappy, exactly the same as this other girl (I don't take that as a compliment)... and somebody asked me if I had been punched because my nose is out of place :///
I think most people are having difficulty loving themselves.I'm one of them.I'm in my mid 20's and I'm just starting to love myself. All my life I created this negative view of myself. We must regain our freedom from all this lies!
@ShortStackClemmensen lol actually alot of asian guys nowadays demand girls that are at least your height!! im asian im consider short im 5 feet 2 inches...
This reminds me of the one time I got a haircut in Korea. The guy (barber/hairdresser/whatever you call them) said that I had very curly hair; yeah, my hair may not be perfectly flat and straight but my hair was far from curly (from a North American perspective).
@cakesareyumy Well, but I think it's true xDD. If I had straight hair they'll probably say that I look like Vanessa Hudgens. Well... At last she's brunette xD (but I don't like her anyway lol)
yp i swear am tan, not that tan though. many people including white people say im the perfect shade. nt too tan and not to light. at times i look really tan/yellowy/pale????? but let me say if those korean students aid i looked like obama i would and hit one of them.seriously. the only way you could look at it as a compliment is cuz obama is mad smart. i like intelligence. i wont tell korean student they look like jackie chan.
i get the face thing, like since seeing more korean people, i totally can see the differences in faces and i no longer think asian people look alike. but i agreee with simon to this day, i don't see any of snsd having that great of a body. i'd say more like zinger or hyosung of secret, or victoria of f(x)
@MinxyJade it really depends muscles weight more than fat if you look toned than probably not, im 5 feet 2 and 115 pound and yes asians think im fat!!
@themangalover1 It's the same with people around me - I am 157cm and 55kg (which are btw mostly muscles and... yeah, boobs) - every member of my family and my asian friends call me OVERweight while my "white" friends keep telling me how skinny I am...
I'm korean and I think this is a genius way of interpreting such stereotype...but I've never thought of this issue in such way... very clever! thank you so much!
@misanthropikbunny You also have to take into account the height difference, I'm 5'7" and I've been told I shouldn't weigh anything less than 120 or I'd be underweight O.o so height matters too not just weight :p from one "bunny" to another lol
@TeArDrOpsReVoLuTiOn yeah b/c in america, people won't tell you you're fat unless your pants size = circumference of the earth. Of course you're a whale by then.
@jilaipi lol usually true im 115 pound, my cousin (asian) came over to my house and said i havnt seen you for a long time how did you get so fat??? to americans im skinny, and asians think im fat!!
@aenahQ so true! and i think north americans have definitely had more exposure to asians than koreans to white people. furthermore all the media may be why koreans seem a bit shallow in looks as well.
Ppl who are saying they're afraid to go to korea, don't be! If anyone makes fun of you, start cussing them out in english (ahaha jk) and be confident! Confidence beats beauty anyday!
when Britney spears gained a lil bit of weight? hahaha a lil bit??? she was a cow XD seriously she was fat for reals lol in America a girl with curves like shakira,Beyonce,Minzy, Rhianna etc is considered to have a super sexy body in Korea they are considered fat-- and since i start watching kpop videos i've seen like 12312 comments saying "how tall is she?" "how tall are u?"
When I lived in Nagasaki, Japan, everyone said that I was getting fat. I didn't see it, and I thought I looked the same. They kept saying it, and it made me a little upset, seeing this video made me realize that it's the culture not that I was really fat :) Thank you!
I think it is also a similar situation with SNSD's Yuri, with everyone calling her black pearl and dark kid and stuff. I guess since I am American, and everyone is all shades of colors over here, Yuri doesn't look any darker in skin than the other 8 members.
@ZKAinfinite and what do you call me a giant? I'm 190 and I'm 5'5. THAT'S OBESE. You're still skinny, dear. T____T im going this April and they'll all call me ugly BOO.
I think Im ugly and nobody wants to love me, just like her I wanna be PRETTY I wanna be PRETTY - Ugly by 2NE1
is martina like 180+ cm or something, cause if she said snsd's members are shorter than her while wearing stiletto, then is she extremely tall? cause sooyong is like 170cm, therefore if she wears a heel, then she'll be posibbly 180cm, no?
YEAHHHH the girls in korea TV don't cm to me as hot curvy... i like curvy like scarlet jo... so yeah to koreans foreigners r all fat! hhahah just ignore their thoughts...
in american terms, simon, the no line is pear shaped. haha i have an x line which typically means i have smaller curves and more of a straight body type an s line has more of a "western" woman's body type so that is more ideal in asia
i have been called different names because im asian and the other asians in my class supposedly 'look' like me and i swear we are polar oppisites and now... there are 3 li/lee's in my class and the teacher goes by last name.... oh dear
thanks for the video!, I completely agree :) , this things are different in every culture, I'm a brazilian and here you see a lot of different people and we don't talk about "how fat you are this days" because we see all the types of person.
My korean guy friend pulled the "you-look-a-little-fat-mother-card" on me once when we we're videochatting -___-;; (i would have been more offended if it wasn't true though ^^;;;)
Koreans are very offensive about beeing fat, they really think and consider you as stupid/low/worth nothing person if you have more pounds of your body. I never go there again!
I can't wait to visit Korea but I'm also scared. I'm very short but very chubby and curvy. I'm nervous for people to tell me things (i already have a low self-esteem). who knows, maybe they won't. i hope they won't. i don't wanna feel sad in a country i've been dying to visit since I was little.
IMO I think "big breast" and "big butts" are kind of overrated like when your hugging a girl you don't want those big boombas to get in the way lol...
thats true, in different culture people see the bodies different, for example:ME in my country (CUBA) im kind of sexy (i think) because i have a little of fat, but in korea they think im fat!! T-T in my country boys like girls that have a little of fat, they dont like thinnies girls cus they think they are touching skeletons XD but what i mean is that in different cultures women have different bodies ^~^b i want a korean girl body!!
*happy for being skinny*

I have been watching MBLAQ's Idol Army, and the host of the show keeps bringing up SeungHo's "yakuza" body (which means that he has a "round" stomach), but he looks skinny to me. I always feel bad for him because it seems like they're making fun of him. =( People's perceptions are really sooo different around the world.

HOW DID YOU GET BACKSTAGE WITH SNSD? :OOOOOOO
Moviestar20 2 weeks ago
That means I would probably be considered normal/average size in Korea. I'm a naturally skinny person and here in France I sometimes get called anorexic... Which I'm not. It's just a question of metabolism.
But anyway... Really interesting video as always :)
And what you say about media and celebrities is so true!

kyuhyunsaranghanda 1 week ago
@kyuhyunsaranghanda Well, you would be surprised how hard it is to love myself... today I have been called an emo, a lesbian, sort of pretty, ugly, mean, unhappy, exactly the same as this other girl (I don't take that as a compliment)... and somebody asked me if I had been punched because my nose is out of place :///
ShortStackClemmensen 1 week ago
@ShortStackClemmensen
I think most people are having difficulty loving themselves.I'm one of them.I'm in my mid 20's and I'm just starting to love myself. All my life I created this negative view of myself. We must regain our freedom from all this lies!

This reminds me of the one time I got a haircut in Korea. The guy (barber/hairdresser/whatever you call them) said that I had very curly hair; yeah, my hair may not be perfectly flat and straight but my hair was far from curly (from a North American perspective).

themangalover1 1 week ago
@themangalover1 It's the same with people around me - I am 157cm and 55kg (which are btw mostly muscles and... yeah, boobs) - every member of my family and my asian friends call me OVERweight while my "white" friends keep telling me how skinny I am...

misanthropikbunny 2 weeks ago
@misanthropikbunny You also have to take into account the height difference, I'm 5'7" and I've been told I shouldn't weigh anything less than 120 or I'd be underweight O.o so height matters too not just weight :p from one "bunny" to another lol

kakoiiboy 3 weeks ago
I think it is also a similar situation with SNSD's Yuri, with everyone calling her black pearl and dark kid and stuff. I guess since I am American, and everyone is all shades of colors over here, Yuri doesn't look any darker in skin than the other 8 members.

is martina like 180+ cm or something, cause if she said snsd's members are shorter than her while wearing stiletto, then is she extremely tall? cause sooyong is like 170cm, therefore if she wears a heel, then she'll be posibbly 180cm, no?

himoto15 3 weeks ago
in american terms, simon, the no line is pear shaped. haha i have an x line which typically means i have smaller curves and more of a straight body type an s line has more of a "western" woman's body type so that is more ideal in asia

I can't wait to visit Korea but I'm also scared. I'm very short but very chubby and curvy. I'm nervous for people to tell me things (i already have a low self-esteem). who knows, maybe they won't. i hope they won't. i don't wanna feel sad in a country i've been dying to visit since I was little.
hieizolo 3 weeks ago
The general consensus, based on many different surveys and polls taken around the world reveal that:
1) The ideal body shape is indeed 36:26:36 (Symmetry is a key factor)
2) The ideal face shape is an oval, as it is long and slender. (Many articles of clothing, and hair styles tend to look best on an oval face.)
3) The average woman's foot size is an 8.
4) And lastly, 5'6 is considered the average height.
