A expressividade de Julian Bream tocando Albeniz é uma lição extraordinária de interpretação. A fluidez da melodia e a utilização conveniente dos diferentes timbres fazem desse vídeo um modelo, um "cult".
I once had the misfortune to share a cabin with Bream in the 70"s, on board a tanker carrying toxic waste to Iceland. He"s a lovely bloke but when he"s had a few cans he can be a right awkward so and so. Had his guitar with him but refused to take it off the top bunk and that was mine. I had to kip on the floor. Next morning he bought me a doughnut for breakfast and played this song. I"ll never forget his sugary fingers sticking to the fretboard. I haven"t seen him since.
@topleft26 Hahaha - brilliant. You and Bream sharing a cabin on a tanker full of toxic waste on its way to Iceland!! You must have been about 6 or 7 at the time. I'm surprised he didn't just chuck you overboard, but in a way I'm pleased he didn't... :-) Great imagination mate - you should be on the box with your memoirs of all the famous people you've never met! A bit like Sir Henry Rawlinson....
My favourite Albeniz and Julian Bream tune superbly played by the master - now sadly retired. No one ever came close to Julians playing not even John Williams could put the emotion and presence into their playing as he did.
@moaardeeb: Agreed; I saw John Williams live back in the 1980s, and while his technique was formidable, his playing was devoid of emotion compared to Bream. I still feel that way. Bream is my choice as the greatest classical guitar & lute virtuoso of the last century.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Why did you say John Williams' performance "was devoid of emotion, compared to Bream?" Do you mean John's facial expressions are not as expressive as Bream's, frankly ?
Very very nice!! Mallorca of Bream is a supreme work. Will it be a daytime port and a night port? Or will it be a ship navigating and an anchoring ship? I think that the state of such a port is expressed well. Thus there is the unique sound that the old engine ship gives. Bream plays it like the sound of the ship in the last of the music. Thank you. (TS)
Wonderful. i love both Breams' and Williams' interpretations of Albeniz. This is surely one of his most beautiful and haunting compositions played by a master of the instrument....now, lets see who is winning the X-FACTOR tonight.
To be honest i think Bream's playing of Spanish music is fantastic. The most vibrant and emotive! As for the recording quality, it must just be the online factor because this a recording from the 80's when he recorded several Albeniz and Granados pieces which are probably his most famous.
35 years ago when I started learning guitar it was a record which i bought, Bream plays Granados & Albeniz which inspired me, this was one of my favourites from the album, I couldnt believe & still cant how much emotion & feeling he got out of the instrument, John Williams may have been better in terms of pure technic but for emotion, Bream gets me every time. The Master!!.
@nickmctrick I feel ya, man! The three best are Segovia, Bream and Williams. Not necessarily in that order. All three awesome in their own way. My first exposure to the classical guitar was Bream. It was a cassette called 'The Art of Julian Bream'. I later found it on vinyl. It's an awesome album. Hard to find. I wish they'd reprint it on CD.
hahahaha dude, you are kidding right? This is music, not run by guidelines. Not run by a drum or a metronome. This is living, breathing music. Too much for you to understand obviously
well I'm not going to laugh at you, but try this. Listen to this whole peice with your eyes closed. Listen to every note. Don't compare it to anything, just listen.
Now when you find a note that is 'a little bit off' ask yourself if it was intentional. Ask yourself if it complements anything in the performance. In this case, I am sure that you will find that it does.
later you will learn when to listen to a piece on its own merit, and you may find that this is a version to compare others TO.
thanks so much i have been looking for this recording of mallorca for so long, this one is the best, his tone is soothing throughout it, played with finesse, just goes together so smoothly, i wasnt even able to enjoy the other versions of this on youtube, only breams

I like to be pedantic: written in f sharp minor for piano. Transcribed to d minor here (as far as I have not gone tone-deaf yet).

Julian Bream is to John Williams what Modernism is to Baroque.

The thing i like about Bream is that he makes John Williams sound like a pretender.

@MrGayItUp Maybe because Williams' tonal palette pales in comparison to Breams master of color and tone.

Wonderful music, evocative of place and time. Also check out Garoto, who wrote many short pieces I take to be the voice of a nostalgic Brazil.
