Two years later I'm STILL trying to figure out what he and the choreographers were thinking. Is it just me or does he sound better in rehearsal than he did in the performance?

I can't imagine the GUTS it would take ANY singer (new or seasoned) to even ATTEMPT to THINK ABOUT performing such an intricate song/dance number--AND THEN TO ACTUALLY DO IT!!

But then there's the insanely talented, wild-hearted, ethical, authentic, and slightly crazy ADAM LAMBERT who jumps in with: "I can do it, I can. And I'll surprise you."

And he did...

And we'll remember...

Going up and down stairs, constantly moving, having to hit many marks for this very busy number, and sound mix issues....still fabulous entertainment from an astounding performer, done live, without lip syncing. Keep on rockin Adam!!!

I have been a Huge Adam fan since I first saw him on Idol. Still am. But I hate this rehearsal and also the live performance. No biggie though since Adam is without a doubt one of the best singers in the world. He continues to amaze me. Outstanding singer and human being.

Adam is a great vocalist and excellent performer, but he was ill-advised on doing this number. Bad song choice and too much going on. I will never forgive ABC on using him as bait and throwing him under the bus afterwards. I admire Adam for his resilience and strength and for overcoming the first big stumble of his career so beautifully. Lots of exciting things have happened since fall of 2009. I am a fan forever and I can not wait for his sophomore album to come out in the fall!

This kid is an awesome singer, seen him live in concert, so I know he can sing.. but my god the AMAs, he sounded awful [ia with NB as well]. Even this here is hinting at the chaos, did no one bother to tell him, it did not sound good? Maybe rethink it? Which he kind of did with the theatrics of the night, distract from the sound. Then the pimping through the show by the announcer, ridiculous, put more pressure on him now.

This proves several things: 1. The Staples Center sound system is FREAKIN' CURSED!! I've only heard Adam sound "bad" twice in his entire career: Singing "No Boundaries" during the AI8 finale, and the FYE AMA performance. 2. This choreography was ill-advised, at best. I'm glad that Adam didn't get hurt during his "Ninja Roll"; this could've been much worse!, and 3. ABC APPROVED and ENDORSED this performance (from rehearsal), then "Bussed' Adam when he delivered his performance. BOO!!

I think this may be the performance that gained Adam the world recognition - it amplified it. So, it' s all good. =) Got everybody talkin' . Must say, the grab-crotch went over my head completely - didnt even notice it until the media frenzy. The guy-kiss was a 'shock' to my system - but a good kind of shock. Made me smile.

The set up is so complicated. So many stairs, movements, dancers, etc. And not the best song to sing live. This song relies a lot on electronics and sounds good recorded. This man is so brave and the expectation was so high and he did an amazing job. Saw him in concert 4 times last year and they were amazing. Can't wait for his 2nd album coming out in the fall. And of course his first album was great too.

Oh Adam, even when you're not at your best you're still amazing. His AMA performance is part of pop culture history now, and will always be remembered. Thankfully, his less-than-stellar vocals took a backseat to the double standards and discrimination that were brought out into the open after the show, as we all know this was a rare off-night for Adam. Vocals aside, the man is fearless and has balls of steel; I have so much respect for the person he is and the way he lives his life.

I was in the audience for the live performance and I have to say vocally the rehearsal was better. Personally I think the choreographer should have been a whole lot smarter and not made it all so damn complicated for Adam. As much experience as Adam has had live with his theater background - executing this choreography with a complicated song was damn near impossible. I'm glad it remains memorable, however!!! ;)

I never watched American Idol, so this was the first time I had ever seen or heard Adam Lambert. But after this performance I was hooked, even though it wasn't his best. And how the rehearsal differs from the performance, I liked the ninja roll, haha. Will love him forever.

Having not watched @adamlambert on American Idol, this was the performance that turned my growing interest/curiosity about him into full-blown obsession! He showed to me that he is the 'real deal.' Love the way he went for it. Love the rawness. Love the rock-star shock elements. Truly one of the best performances I've ever seen!

I dont care how big of a hot mess this was, and it was, I loved it. :P lol And I Love Adam! Not many seasoned performers wouldve taken on this level of difficulty.. song or choregraphy wise. And this theater is apparently notorious for bad sound and mixing. The only pple who sound good are the ones lipsyncing, which Adam wont do. The only thing I didnt like about the final show was what felt like angry energy coming from Adam. It felt "off". Otherwise, I thought it was fun! Thanks for posting!

the last note was great! ive seen him at 14 concerts since this and he is one of the best live performers in the game (visually and vocally)! The AMA experience was a learning one for him. His Glam Nation tour was absolutely incredible!!!!! I cant wait for his next album & tour.

The rehearsal is much better than the actual performance. No stumble and fall, no kiss, no gropping of girl on bar, no simulated oral sex and much better vocals, and no finger to the audience at the end. If this had been the actual performance, there would have been no controversy just a great performance. Wish he had stuck with the rehearsal and had not gotten carried away in the moment, as he said. I cannot watch the AMA performance. I makes me so sad. Love Adam and want the best for him. xx

@pkr52180 Given what you said, it might have been a great performance. However, Adam's actual AMA TV performance is more than great--it will become legendary--just like Elvis, The Beatles. He broke through some pretty big barriers in his actual performance. Yes, he is being discriminated against because he is both male & gay for doing what females get by with routinely. When somebody shatters a boundary, expect a sonic boom. (Or, was that Adam's powerful voice? :) LOVE the excitement of him.

@pkr52180 I disagree. Except for the most obvious "missing elements" (crotch grind, ninja roll, Tommy kiss), the performance was identical to the rehearsal. No matter what, the pearl-clutchers (and Disney/ABC) would've had a heart attack at the set-up alone. But the AMA's APPROVED Adam's number after seeing this rehearsal, hyped him up to high heaven to get ratings, then Adam delivered the goods. I'm NEVER forgiving ABC for throwing Adam under the bus!!

Only live performance of FYE that I've ever liked was at Red Robinson - terrific. But I agree with Meatloaf who said this song was in the wrong key for Adam. He sounds strained here and off-key. When I watched his original performance, what seems like a decade ago, I remember getting up and yelling "No, no, no" at the screen, knowing almost immediately it was a mess. Gawd, it was painful for so many of us who love him. I watched this rehearsal footage and sorry that I did. Bad memories.

@2039marl I did not have your reaction. I thought it was STUNNING & THRILLING. The only part that was upsetting was that he fell (which I did catch right off), which I think pushed his adrenalin way up. I bet Adam has never fallen on stage in a live performance in his life. There were only 2 moves missing (the female crotch grab was here): the simulated head to crotch with the guy (who didn't seem to be present or in position here) & the kissing of Tommy. I think he sang best in actual TV perf.

1) Very dificult song to sing live 2) Good God, what a freaking obstacle course!!!! I'm amazed that Adam attempted to both sing (THIS song) and navigate this obstacle course simultaneously, plus he said in interviews that as he watched the show, the pressure to up his performance was growing exponentially. So glad this is over and done, lessons learned, hit singles, sold out world-wide concert behind him, dedicated fan-base and Grammy-nomination earned. Love you, Adam, you brave talented soul

Now that I've seen this footage, I realize what a hot mess the whole performance was from the very beginning. The choreography was ridiculous. The staging was outright perilous. The fact that Adam attempted to sing live with that kind of distraction proves what a dedicated showman he is. I wish his creative team had considered an understated theme. I envisioned a rather dark American Bandstand, myself. But, Adam has never chosen the easy road down the mainstream. That's why he's amazing now.

What a blast! Thanks for whoever provided this. Yes. A mess. Vocals off all over the place. Actually better in the final show. The part "I'm here for your entertainment", with the one girl on the side was better in rehearsal. And it sounds like he had band members singing. Probably better with the vocal track. Too many people on stage. The mixing was bad that night for everyone dancing or moving. Okay for those just standing and singing. Adam looked great however. Eber said this was worst vocal!

This does not show Adam at his best. His vocals were a bit off at the rehearsal just like they were at the show. These are the ONLY times I've ever heard Adam sing with less than flawless vocals. I wonder to what extent the sound system and/or mix at the venue contributed to the problem?
