it seems REM divide opinion with every album they make, I think Accelerate is excellant if a tad short, a lot less "polished" than say Reveal, which for me has some great songs that are simply over produced. It will always be interesting to see what REM come up with next though.
Nice little video but Accelerate- despite the band's hype- was still rubbish. The less hype I hear about Collapse Into Now the more I 'll believe it might actually be some cop.
Personally, I think Around the Sun and Accelerate are not very good. Reveal was passable. Up, before that, was, in my opinion, a superb effort. The songwriting on Around the Sun was terribly spotty. There were few recognizable melodies. Stipe's singing was off. Accelerate wants to compensate by being loud. R.E.M. is not at its best when they get into that loud guitar driven sound (with a few exceptions on the Monster album).
I think Accelerate was a great, back to form record by R.E.M. However, I must say that it was one of the worst, horribly mastered CDs I've ever heard. It's not the band's fault, but chalk Accelerate up to the loudness wars.
I love R.E.M, their versitily seems to be reflected on many of my favourite artists :) Silly of them to splt.
