Al is a virtuoso when he teaches he expects you to be of a sufficiently high level, if you think he's a bad teacher you are clearly not at that level.
he's not a horrible teacher - he's NEVER going to radically slow his stuff down for 'beginners.' like or not, he presumes you have not just a certain knowledge but a certain ability. he is not the kind of guy that would say 'anyone' can play guitar.
@ChrissyChiChi "Why do so many jazz musicians look like child molesters?"
Some of the best "strait-up" Jazz players look like outright dorks. I suppose there's no sense of urgency to improve their physical looks like Rock and Pop artists, because technical Jazz music dosen't cater to a crowd of young bimbos who only need a basic beat they can dance to...
Brillian technician: strong and efective licks; irreprehensible speed and percussion; logic combinations of scales and arpeggios; high graded knowledge of rythm and percussion; etc.. Just for these, Al di Meola has all my respect, as a guitar lover in general and an amateur guitarist. He is an inspiration for all of us.
@Crazyflew I agree. I don't want to see his crotch either, but apparently the guy who shot this determined this view (in all its glory, lol) to be the best one for seeing what his fretting hand is doing. Just my opinion here, but I think they could've raised the camera about 3 inches and we'd all be spared of this aberration. lol again!
Da'dario uses Chuck Norris' ass hair to make acoustic and electric guitar strings and anything leftover is used to make suspension bridges for San Francisco :))
i would't say 'horrible', but like Yngwie he certainly isn't detailed and patient enough..like say, paul gilbert or john petrucci, who are GREAT teachers
hmm....i cant think of anyone that can outplay him, but maybe tie with him or rival him would be (in my opinion) Alex Skolnick (of Testament), Frank Gambale, Marty Friedman (With Megadeth and solo) , Paul gilbert and Shawn Lane.
Al being one of the best, it's hard to beat him. But some that can keep up would be the one's that "oompaloompa" named, but I could also throw in John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth, Michael Romeo, Steve Lukather,....hell, there are quite a few. If you want to add blazing speed, you could go with Rusty Cooley, M.A.B, Shawn Lane. "Being better" is a very subjective term that is different among the people you ask.
Not a problem at all. That's great that you are getting into some of the more "obscure" guitarists instead of the BIG NAMED one's. I have a subscription to Guitar World & Guitar Player, and while GW has a lot of info & interviews with the more "popular" or "known" guitarists, GP writes about a hell of a lot of guitarists that I have never heard of but are pretty amazing. That's another way to find "hidden gems." Either way, good luck with your endeavors whether playing or appreciating the music.
I know he really likes Chick Corea but instruction? Al is a "top of the mountain" player He might look to composers for ideas to expand his own ideas but I don't think he would for instruction, you know what I mean?
I don't see how, since Al's technique is flawless, and he seems able to play anything he wishes ...Wait a minute, how about that guy from the "Crossroads" film, Eugene Martone; didn't he win that epic guitar duel at the end, making Martone the best of the best? ...Oh, I forgot, that was fiction, not a documentary.
...But seriously, most any dedicated player would love to have Al's overall abilities, so I don't think you're missing anything by learning his methods.
It just blows my mind to hear how clean his picking is both on electric and acoustic. Everyone knows about his acoustic brilliance but even on his electric songs he's has no distortion to speak of and, thus, has nowhere to hide flaws. And it's still crystal freaking clear. Unbelievable.
I've always hated Di Meola's album covers. They look like he's trying to sell you a cheap Winnebago on the corner of main rather than what might be the greatest guitar work ever recorded.
I asked him this specific question back in 2003 when he did a guitar clinic in the Chicagoland area Guitar Center. He actually said that he "hated" the whole gypsy jazz movement since it was very rhythmically "straight" with a repetitive, non-syncopated pattern. He also made a parody of it by playing a small segment with his rhythm section which included Gumbi Ortiz
Electric guitar is way harder to play than acustic. On the acustic you have alternate picking, slaping and a few other minor tehniques, while on the electric guitar you can play alternate, alternative, sweep, legato, tapping with all the fingers, bending, armonics tons of styles of vibrato, you have to mute the strings with both hands etc. and they all sound good
nah xD never played one...anyway i don't find al a great acoustic player...neither electric, hes good but not the big deal...and i just hate his articulation...
its hilarious... i started off with a high action acoustic, and i hated even touching an electric cause the strings gave so much and there was no stability... then i bought an ovation, got really good on it, and then a year later i picked up an electric guitar and it felt natural
