@Woofycat I have lost much, but I relied on myself to find another job and change my career. I have had three jobs at once, and no insurance. I have gone to college courses while working two jobs. Certain programs enable people to not go out and do what they have to do and become "victims". I believe that the federal government should have block grants to states for social programs and get out of the business of managing the programs, that would be my compromise.

70 billion dollars is 70 billion dollars going back into the economy. I like that we take care of poor people and not kick them to the curb. If you want to cut 70 billion dollars, cut that from the defense budget and end those wars. Then you can save money.
If they replaced the "free food money" with "free food ration blocks" it would help insure that the food received meets nutritional guidelines and could be made rather cheaply with long shelf storage ability. Moreover it would help ensure that people don't starve but don't take rations unless they would otherwise go hungry... Unless they are also hoarders that will collect them just in case they need them later.
I don't really pay attention to social programs anymore. Less than half of the money actually makes it to the people (the other half goes to "administrative costs", or the govt). We have a defense dept that has lost over 2 trillion twice (maybe more, that's just what has been admitted) and we say nothing about it. The food stamps, welfare, medicare, etc. stuff is all just distractions of the real issue.

When my ex-wife ran off and left me with the kids back in 1996, I went on welfare/foodstamps to support me and my kids. I made use of the programs offered for tuition, childcare and textbooks. I ended up getting an associates degree and got the hell off welfare in less than 2 years. Some of the similar programs they offer for single mothers are INSANE! I don't know why so few people take advantage of them! There is really NO reason for anyone to be on welfare for more than 4 years or so!
Un-employment, food stamps, welfare, etc. were programs intended to lend a hand to people faced w/ hardships. These programs were never meant to sustain people/families for their whole lives. I do not think we need to cut the individual amounts to these programs, instead I think we should focus on those who would abuse the system. With Republicans ernestly trying to destroy our economy, many more citizens, who once were gainfully employed, may find they require these services in the near future.
I liked the WIC program because they were specific in what you could buy. In NY they have a thing where you can go and get produce at farmers markets. You get vouchers for each month, I think, and you can get so much produce per month. My daughter was on it for a short time when she first moved to this state, so I might be totally wrong in what that particular program is exactly, but it was along those lines.

I was on welfare and foodstamps a couple years ago, its a long story I have kids and kept getting laid off and so on. Anyways, for the cash assistance I got just enough to pay the rent and maybe the electric which was fine till I got another job but the food stamps was ridiculous! We got way to much a month for food and we would end up with an extra 100 or a litttle more at the end of each month. So I have to agree butt take more like 50 bucks off each person. Guess it depends on the family idk

The cell phone service (or more properly phone since it can be used for hard wire service too)is not federal, but state and is in conjunction with private companies. You have to pay something and get a minimal service, beyond that you pay. It came about because disabled people who were retired or on disability were cancelling their phones to pay for their meds and dying. I know because I had an aunt who was on the floor for 3 days because she cancelled her phone to pay for her heat.
@redtony58 It's nothing to do with the feds and no private company is required to be part of it, although they are pressured. I know when it started it was means tested, but only applied to the elderly and disabled, not general welfare. Hope that helps. Back to work.

I'll post a video response I did that has the link to the article where it states it's a federal program that has come to their state. It says in the article that telecommunication companies are doing it because the feds say they have too.

What I have discovered w/ many recipients is that they have so much surplus after their needs are met, they can now financially profit by selling these stamps.

If they replaced the "free food money" with "free food ration blocks" it would help insure that the food received meets nutritional guidelines and could be made rather cheaply with long shelf storage ability. Moreover it would help ensure that people don't starve but don't take rations unless they would otherwise go hungry... Unless they are also hoarders that will collect them just in case they need them later.

I don't really pay attention to social programs anymore. Less than half of the money actually makes it to the people (the other half goes to "administrative costs", or the govt). We have a defense dept that has lost over 2 trillion twice (maybe more, that's just what has been admitted) and we say nothing about it. The food stamps, welfare, medicare, etc. stuff is all just distractions of the real issue.

When my ex-wife ran off and left me with the kids back in 1996, I went on welfare/foodstamps to support me and my kids. I made use of the programs offered for tuition, childcare and textbooks. I ended up getting an associates degree and got the hell off welfare in less than 2 years. Some of the similar programs they offer for single mothers are INSANE! I don't know why so few people take advantage of them! There is really NO reason for anyone to be on welfare for more than 4 years or so!

Un-employment, food stamps, welfare, etc. were programs intended to lend a hand to people faced w/ hardships. These programs were never meant to sustain people/families for their whole lives. I do not think we need to cut the individual amounts to these programs, instead I think we should focus on those who would abuse the system. With Republicans ernestly trying to destroy our economy, many more citizens, who once were gainfully employed, may find they require these services in the near future.

I liked the WIC program because they were specific in what you could buy. In NY they have a thing where you can go and get produce at farmers markets. You get vouchers for each month, I think, and you can get so much produce per month. My daughter was on it for a short time when she first moved to this state, so I might be totally wrong in what that particular program is exactly, but it was along those lines.

Berz its a great idea to cut 12 dollars off each monthly handout,hell we can probably cut 24 dollar off.That would save what 14 billion a year,BUT the problem is our government would just take the left over funds and BLOW it on other useless or dangerous crap.It would give the government that much more money to spend on trying to figure out more ways to screw us.More laws more gun control more cops.We dont need more of any of the crap I mentioned we need less.

I was on welfare and foodstamps a couple years ago, its a long story I have kids and kept getting laid off and so on. Anyways, for the cash assistance I got just enough to pay the rent and maybe the electric which was fine till I got another job but the food stamps was ridiculous! We got way to much a month for food and we would end up with an extra 100 or a litttle more at the end of each month. So I have to agree butt take more like 50 bucks off each person. Guess it depends on the family idk

You and SNBI can disagree all you want, but I feel like people who have been forced to put into the SS system that claims to provide insurance should have a right to claim it. On the other hand I think insurance is a scam. If it was optional that would be cool. I understand if you owe money on something it should be insured. I do not however feel that I owe the government anything. In fact I owe only one person anything and that I pay religiously. Screw you all.

We have people who have come here illegally, had a baby in this country, and now are on Welfare because the government "cares so much" about "our" youth. Want to know how I know this? The cell phone service (or more properly phone since it can be used for hard wire service too)is not federal, but state and is in conjunction with private companies. You have to pay something and get a minimal service, beyond that you pay. It came about because disabled people who were retired or on disability were cancelling their phones to pay for their meds and dying. I know because I had an aunt who was on the floor for 3 days because she cancelled her phone to pay for her heat.

@redtony58 It's nothing to do with the feds and no private company is required to be part of it, although they are pressured. I know when it started it was means tested, but only applied to the elderly and disabled, not general welfare. Hope that helps. Back to work.

@redtony58 This is a federal program called the Universal Service Fund. The federal government says it must be done. I'll post a video response I did that has the link to the article where it states it's a federal program that has come to their state. It says in the article that telecommunication companies are doing it because the feds say they have too.

In my business I encounter a lot of ppl who receive forms of gov asst, Food Stamps being one of them.
What I have discovered w/ many recipients is that they have so much surplus after their needs are met, they can now financially profit by selling these stamps.
Personally, I am not against gov asst at all... be it welfare, housing, food stamps or anything else. However we have got to have some sort of reform, if not, it's all for nothing and we're simply throwing good money after bad.
